Title: The Story of Chachi Arcola: From Happy Days to Charles In Charge
Setting: Milwaukee
Time: Approximately a year after Joanie's and Chachi's wedding
Characters: Chachi, Joanie, Fonzie, Roger, Howard, Marion
Disclaimer: All the characters were borrowed from Garry Marshall's Happy Days sitcom. The plotline is my own. The content deals with Joanie's and Chachi's divorce. I am sorry if this offends anyone. It is meant in good taste.

~THE CUNNINGHAM LIVING ROOM. JOANIE AND CHACHI ARE ARGUING. HOWARD IS STILL AT THE HARDWARE STORE. MARION IS UPSTAIRS CLEANING. JOANIE JUST GOT HOME FROM A LONG DAY OF TEACHING AT PATTON. CHACHI IS LYING ON THE SOFA IN HIS PAJAMAS, WATCHING TV. HE HAS BEEN THERE ALL DAY.~

Joanie-- Chach, I've found you lying on this sofa every day when I get home for the past two weeks! Are you even looking for a job?

Chachi-- Of course I am. It's just tough to find work in Milwaukee. No one has an opening for a musician.

Joanie-- Chachi, I know how important your music is to you. And I'm not trying to take that away from you. But, we're married now. We can't live with my parents forever. And we can't live on our own on my teacher's salary.

Chachi-- Then we'll move in with Mom and Al...

Joanie-- Chach...

Chachi-- What?

Joanie-- You're missing the point....

Chachi-- I know Joanie...*takes her hands in his*...Look, I love you. I'll find work somewhere. You don't have to worry.

BUT, BOTH JOANIE AND CHACHI ARE WORRIED. THEY BOTH KNOW THAT HE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO HOLD DOWN A REAL JOB IN OVER A YEAR. AND HE JUST ISN'T INTERESTED IN ANY WORK OTHER THAN MUSIC.

FONZIE AND ROGER WALK THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR. THEY HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING STUDENTS AT PATTON. DANNY TAGS ALONG BEHIND THEM. FONZIE EYES UP CHACHI

Fonzie-- Awwww....isn't this sweet. Chachi forgot to get dressed today. Boy, you must have really felt silly going out on job interviews dressed like that!

Chachi-- I didn't go anywhere today. And I didn't forget to change, I just didn't feel like doing it.

Fonzie-- Nooo.....(his voice is mocking)

Chachi-- ~WALKS OVER TO THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS~ You all don't know what it's like. You have your perfect jobs-- getting to do what you enjoy every day. But me? Well, there aren't any jobs for me. What am I supposed to do? I mean why even bother getting dressed or going out at all? It's always the same. I'm just a failure.

Fonzie-- ~HIS TEMPER STARTS TO FLARE UP. HE POINTS HIS FINGER AT CHACHI~ Chachi, the only way you'll ever be a failure is if you choose to be one!

Chachi-- Oh Fonz, what would you know about it?

~THE TONE OF CHACHI'S VOICE IGNITES FONZIES TEMPER. FONZ LUNGES FORWARD, READY TO PUNCH CHACHI. BUT, ROGER GRABS FONZIE AND HOLDS HIM BACK. CHACHI STORMS UPSTAIRS.~

Fonzie-- That kid is going to learn one of these days.

~JOANIE SIGHS AND SITS ON THE SOFA~

Joanie-- I thought our marriage would make things better. But, I'm just going to have to face it. Chachi and I are not meant to be together.

~FONZIE AND ROGER ARE SHOCKED BY JOANIE'S LAST COMMENT. THEY SIT DOWN ON EITHER SIDE OF HER AND TRY TO RATIONALIZE WITH HER~

Roger-- Look Joanie, you're just upset. Sure, Chachi's been out of work for a while, but give him time and something will turn up.

Joanie-- Roger, it's been eight months. He's had job offers. But, nothing's good enough for him. Let's face it. He's not going to be happy until he's out on the road touring with the band. And I'm what's keeping him from that. I love him, but if I'm keeping him from being happy, and not doing anything about it, then we're both going to be miserable.

Fonzie-- ~TAKES JOANIE'S CHIN IN HIS HAND AND TILTS HER FACE AROUND SO SHE'S LOOKING AT HIM~ Shortcake, you can't keep blaming yourself like this. It's not your fault that Chachi's out of work. That boy is just a bum!

Joanie-- He's happy when he plays his music, Fonz. I know him. He's not a bum. But, he also isn't cut out to live in Milwaukee. I've already talked to an attorney. He's drawing up the divorce papers as we speak.

Roger-- Joanie! That's drastic! What will your parents say?

Joanie-- Sure, it's drastic. But, you don't have to worry. I've been thinking about this for a long time. I can't come up with any other alternative.

Fonzie-- Shortcake, are you sure this is what you want to do?

Joanie-- I'm sure.

Fonzie-- Then, that's it. I'll support you all the way.

Roger-- So will I. We'll both do whatever is needed to help you. We trust your desicion if you think it's the right one.

Joanie-- Do you mean that?

Roger-- Of course we do!

Joanie-- Great! Then you can be the ones to break the news to Chachi! Just give me time to get out of town first...(joking)

Roger-- ~DOES HIS FAKE LAUGH~ Haha. Funny. But, you have to be the one to tell him. It's only fair for news of this proportion to come from the original source.

~FONZIE KISSES JOANIE ON HER CHEEK.~

Fonzie-- Shortcake, you know I'm always here for you. I love you. I'll do whatever you need. If you want, I'll be with you when you tell him, but *you* have to be the one to tell him. If you are right, and you are the only thing holding him back from his dream, then he will be relieved. Sure, he'll be angry. But, in the long run, he'll thank you.

Joanie-- I just wish I would have seen this before we got married.

Fonzie-- Sometimes, we don't see things until we're forced to.

~DANNY WALKS OVER AND HUGS JOANIE~

Danny-- Don't worry, Joanie. I love you.

Joanie-- ~LAUGHS AND SMILES~ Hehehe. Well, thanks, Danny. I love you too!

Fonzie-- Aaahhhhyyyy....the kid's already a chip off the old block.

Joanie-- One more favor, Fonz?

Fonzie-- Anything

Joanie-- Let me move in with you after I tell my parents. Dad spent a fortune on that wedding!

Fonzie-- ~LAUGHS~ I think you'd better. On second thought, I think you'd better move in with me first, and then tell your father over the phone!

~FONZIE, ROGER, AND JOANIE ATTEMPT TO LAUGH TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD.~

~CHACHI AND JOANIE ARE SITTING AT A CORNER TABLE AT ARNOLD'S AFTER HOURS.~

Joanie-- Chachi, we have to talk

Chachi-- ~LAUGHS~ I thought that's what we've been doing...

Joanie-- Chach, this is serious. Please don't joke.

Chachi-- I'm sorry.

Joanie-- Chachi, we've....*A LUMP HAS FORMED IN HER THROAT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SPEAK. SHE SITS QUIETLY FOR A FEW SECONDS, FORMING THE WORDS IN HER MIND.*

Chachi-- Joanie? What is it? You're starting to scare me.

Joanie-- Chachi, I think you should take the band on tour.

Chachi-- Really? That's great! So you've changed your mind and decided we should tour after all?

Joanie-- Chach, I think *you* should tour.

Chachi-- Joanie, we've discussed this. It's too hard for long distance relationships to survive. They always fail.

Joanie-- *TEARS FORM IN HER EYES* I know. I wish I had known earlier, but now I know.

Chachi-- What? You know what?

Joanie-- *SWALLOWS HARD* That our marriage was a mistake. That our lives are heading in two opposite directions and we're only hurting each other by staying together.

Chachi-- *HE'S NOW ANGRY. HE PUSHES HIS CHAIR BACK FROM THE TABLE AND LEAPS UP* A mistake? You think our marriage was a mistake?

Joanie-- Chachi, I love you with all my heart. But, we just make each other miserable. I'm starting to doubt if we ever should have gotten married in the first place. *CRIES*

~CHACHI SWINGS HIS ARM AND HURLS SEVERAL CHAIRS ACROSS THE ROOM~

Chachi-- Well, I'm so glad that you've waited until now to tell me. What's wrong Joanie? Have you fallen for another man? And now you just need an excuse to get rid of me?

Joanie-- Of course not! Chachi, I'm doing this for us. You're still the man I love, but....

~CHACHI NO LONGER HEARS WHAT JOANIE IS SAYING. HE IS IN TOTAL RAGE.~

~JUST THEN FONZIE WALKS IN.~

Fonzie-- Whoah! What happened to this place? Did a tornado stop by here unannounced? (He noticed the scattered chairs)

~JOANIE, STILL CRYING, LOOKS UP AT FONZIE. FONZIE WALKS TO HER SIDE AND WIPES AWAY THE TEARS WITH HIS HAND. HE WINKS AT HER AND RUNS HIS FINGERS DOWN ALONG THE SIDE OF HER CHEEK.~

Chachi-- *IGNORING FONZIE* So, who is he Joanie? Who is the man who you are seeing behind my back? Are you sleeping with him?

Fonzie-- *TURNS TO FACE CHACHI* Chachi, you're upset. But, you need to calm down. NOW.

Chachi-- Did you know about it, Fonz? Did you know that she was going to leave me?

Fonz-- Yeah, I knew.

Chachi-- Well, great. Danny told me that Joanie was going to move in with you. I thought he was joking. I guess he wasn't. So, are you in love with her?

Fonzie-- I knew better than to talk in front of the kid! But, yes, Chachi. As a matter of fact, I am in love with Joanie. I'm more in love with her than you could ever imagine. ~JOANIE LOOKS UP AT FONZIE CURIOUSLY.~ She is the most astounding person in the world and her happiness means everything to me. I would go to the ends of the earth just to protect her. But, I'm not in love with her in the way you are insinuating, Chachi. Shortcake is my best friend's little sister. I love her like she's my best friend's little sister. However, I assure you, if I were married to her, I would treat her ten million times better than you have been.

~CHACHI HITS FONZIE, THEN RUNS OUT. FONZIE RECOVERS FROM THE BLOW AND RUNS AFTER HIM. CHACHI HAS ESCAPED, THOUGH. SO, FONZIE COMES BACK IN TO GET JOANIE. HE WRAPS HIS ARM AROUND HER AND KISSES THE TOP OF HER HEAD AS SHE CRIES.~

Fonzie-- Come on, Shortcake. Let's get you home.

Joanie-- Thanks, Fonz.

~FONZIE TAKES JOANIE OUT TO HER CAR. THEY DISCOVER THAT THE WINDSHIELD HAS BEEN BROKEN. SOMEONE THREW A ROCK THROUGH IT.~

Fonzie-- *under his breath* Chachi Arcola, I'm going to kill you....

~SUDDENLY, JOANIE RECOGNIZES A FEELING DWEELING UP INSIDE HER. SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND IT, BUT SHE KNOWS THAT SHE IS DEVELOPING A CRUSH ON FONZIE. SHE WATCHES THE WAY HE MOVES HIS BODY LIKE JAMES DEAN. FOR THE FIRST TIME SHE FEELS THE WARMTH RADIATING OFF HIM AS HE HOLDS HER CLOSE TO HIM AND WALKS HER TO HIS MOTORCYCLE.~

Joanie (to herself)-- You're cracking up! A crush on Fonzie? You've got to get a grip!

Fonzie-- Did you say something, Shortcake?

Joanie-- Uh...no, Fonz.

~THE TWO HOP ONTO FONZIE'S BIKE~

Fonzie-- Shortcake, I'm going to take you to my apartment for a while before I take you home. I think we need to get you calmed down before you're confronted with anything else.

Joanie-- Ok, Fonz.

~FONZIE IS WORRIED ABOUT CHACHI. BUT, HE TRIES NOT TO UPSET JOANIE ANY MORE THAN SHE ALREADY IS BY VOICING HIS CONCERNS. HE THINKS TO HIMSELF, "IF THAT KID IS DUMB ENOUGH TO HIT ME AND BREAK JOANIE'S CAR WINDOW, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT HE IS CAPABLE OF."~

~FONZIE AND JOANIE ARRIVE AT FONZIE'S APARTMENT COMPLEX. THEY DISMOUNT FROM HIS MOTORCYCLE AND WALK TO HIS APARTMENT. THE BABYSITTER, A TALL, BEAUTIFUL BLONDE WITH BLUE EYES AND LEGS THAT DON'T STOP, IS IN THE APARTMENT WITH DANNY. FONZIE KISSES HER HELLO AND APOLOGIZES FOR BEING LATE. HE THEN TELLS HER THAT SHE IS FREE TO GO. JOANIE CRIES AS FEELINGS OF JEALOUSY RISE UP WITHIN HER.~

Fonzie-- Boy, when that girl cries it floods! Don't worry sweetheart, we didn't need the sitter any longer. She'll come back tomorrow.

Joanie-- *WIPING AWAY THE TEARS* Sorry, Fonzie. I didn't mean to do that.

Fonzie-- It's okay. You're going through a lot right now. That's why I brought you here. Cry your little heart out.

Joanie-- There's no need. I'm sure it's out of my system by now.

~JUST THEN, DANNY COMES OUT OF HIS BEDROOM WITH A BROKEN TOY TRUCK. ~

Danny-- Dad, I broke my truck. Oh, hi Joanie!

~JOANIE STARTS CRYING AGAIN~

Danny-- Joanie, it's okay. Don't cry. It was an old truck. It was bound to break eventually.

Fonzie-- Here, Danny, let me see that truck. You go back to your room and get ready for bed. I'll have that truck in better shape than ever by the time I'm done with it.

Danny-- Thanks, Dad! Is she going to be okay?

Fonzie-- Sure, she will. But, we might let her sleep here on the pull out bed tonight. She can go back home when she feels better.

Danny- Cool! And Dad, please tell her not to worry about the truck. It really was old.

~FONZIE LAUGHS AND SENDS DANNY TO BED.~

Joanie-- I think I'd better call my parents and let them know where I am.

Fonzie-- Let me take care of that. I don't think they'll be very calm if they talk to a hysterical daughter. I'll just explain to them that you'll be staying here tonight.

Joanie-- Ok, Fonz. *YAWNS* Whatever you say.

~JOANIE LIES DOWN ON THE SOFA AND CLOSES HER EYES. IN A FEW MINUTES, SHE IS FAST ASLEEP.~

~A KNOCK IS HEARD ON THE DOOR.~

Fonzie-- Visitors? At this hour?

~FONZIE OPENS THE DOOR. ROGER IS STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE.~

Roger-- Hi Fonz! I just needed to borrow some--- (his voice trails off as he sees his cousin sleeping on Fonzie's sofa) Uh, Fonz....Joanie is sleeping on your sofa!

Fonzie-- Wow! You're a regular Sherlock Holmes!

Roger-- Fonz, WHY is Joanie sleeping on your sofa?

Fonzie-- Because she can't go home. Her marital bliss is not so blissful.

Roger-- Oh, no! She didn't have another fight with Chachi!

Fonzie-- Roger, she told him she wanted a divorce tonight.

Roger-- How'd he take it?

Fonzie-- *RUBS HIS SORE JAW* Well, at least he didn't hit her. I'm on my way out to look for him. Who knows what kind of trouble he's going to get himself into.

Roger-- What did Uncle Howard and Aunt Marion say?

Fonzie-- Oh! I knew I forgot something! I was just about to call them.

Roger-- Fonz, they are not going to approve of Joanie staying the night here. And I'm not even so sure that I approve. Fonz, I know you have good intentions, but this can lead to trouble.

Fonzie-- Roger, she needs my help. I can't take her home because her parents are going to flip when they find out what is happening and that is going to upset her even more. Besides, I need someone to watch Danny while I go beat some sense into Chachi.

Roger-- Fonz, Uncle Howard and Aunt Marion need to know what's going on. Don't you think they're going to be worried about their daughter being here all night?

Fonzie-- No...

Roger-- And, I don't think she's in any condition to be left in charge of Danny. I doubt she can even take care of herself right now. I read all about this in a psychology book. People who experience this type of trauma......

Fonz-- Roger, while I'd love to stay here and be bored to death, I have more pressing matters to attend to. You can stay with her!

Roger-- But....(FONZ HAS LEFT)....Oh, wonderful! Why do I always wind up in the middle of things?

~FONZIE WALKS INTO A LOCAL BAR. CHACHI IS SITTING AT THE BAR, SURROUNDED BY A PILE OF EMPTY BEER CANS, SINGING TO HIMSELF.~

Fonzie-- Chachi!

Chachi-- *hiccups* Uh...hiya Fonz!

Fonzie-- You're drunk!

Chachi-- Naaaahhhh.....I've only had one-- errrr, two--- errr,...hmmmm....what comes after two?

Fonzie-- *LOOKS AT THE MOUNTAIN OF EMPTY BEER CANS* Three....

Chachi-- Three what? *hiccups again* Fonz, has anyone ever told you that you have beautiful hair?

Fonz-- (flattered) Well, actually, yeah.....*SNAPS HIS FINGERS* Wait a minute! Chachi, you're drunk! We need to get you home.

Chachi-- Ok....*CHACHI TRIES TO STAND UP, BUT HIS LEGS GIVE OUT AND HE COLLAPSES TOWARD THE FLOOR. FONZIE CATCHES HIM AND HOLDS HIM UP*

Fonzie-- *SIGHS* Well, I guess I can kill you tomorrow. Right now, I've got to get you home.

::::: CUNNINGHAM HOUSE::::::::

~SOMEONE IS KNOCKING LOUDLY ON THE DOOR~

Marion-- Howard! Someone's at the door!

~HOWARD TRIES TO WAKE UP~

Howard-- Huh? What's wrong?

Marion-- Someone's at the door! It might be a burgalar!

Howard-- Marion, I don't think burgalors knock on doors.

Marion-- Well, Howard, it's someone. Now, go see who it is!

~HOWARD GETS UP, PUTS ON HIS ROBE, AND GOES DOWNSTAIRS. MARION FOLLOWS. FONZIE STANDS ON THE OTHER SIDE, HOLDING UP A VERY INTOXICATED CHACHI.~

Howard-- Fonzie! Do you know what time it is! What's wrong?

Marion-- Oh my goodness! It's Chachi! He's....he's.....he's......DRUNK!

~HOWARD HELPS FONZIE CARRY CHACHI INSIDE. THEY DROP HIM ON THE SOFA.~

Howard-- How did this happen?

~MARION TRIES TO EXPLAIN HOW PEOPLE GET DRUNK~

Howard-- Marion, I know how people get drunk. What I meant was, how did Chachi get drunk?

Marion-- Oh, right. I knew that. Sorry dear.

Fonzie-- Well, it's a long story. He and Joanie got into a fight. They...a...well, I think the two of you need to sit down for this one. They are going to get a divorce.

Marion-- Oh my goodness! *COVERS HER EYES WITH HER HAND*

Howard-- A divorce?! You've got to be kidding. Do you know how much money I spent on that wedding? *GRABS HIS CHEST*
I suddenly don't feel so well.

Fonzie-- Mr. and Mrs. C., I know this is a huge shock. I understand that you have every reason to be upset. But, right now I think we need to focus on the kids. They need our help.

Marion-- Of course, Fonzie. I'll make some coffee. Hopefully, that will sober Chachi up a little.

~GETS UP AND LEAVES TOWARD THE KITCHEN. BEGINS MAKING COFFEE. HOWARD AND FONZIE SIT IN SILENCE. CHACHI IS PASSED OUT ON THE COUCH.~

Howard-- Fonzie, I don't know how to thank you enough for helping the family like this. I know that both Chachi and Joanie think the world of you.

Fonzie-- Aahhyyy....that's my job. I take care of my family.

Howard-- Let's try to get Chachi upstairs. Marion can bring the coffee up when it's ready.

~FONZIE AND HOWARD CARRY CHACHI UPSTAIRS~

~FONZIE RETURNS TO HIS APARTMENT. JOANIE IS STILL SLEEPING ON THE SOFA. DANNY IS SLEEPING SOUNDLY IN HIS ROOM. ROGER IS ASLEEP IN THE CHAIR. FONZIE QUIETLY HANGS UP HIS LEATHER JACKET AND SCARF. HE CHECKS ON DANNY. HE CHECKS ON JOANIE AND COVERS A BLANKET OVER HER. AS HE IS ABOUT TO GO TO BED, ROGER WAKES UP.~

Roger-- Were you able to find him?

Fonzie-- Yeah. He was so drunk I had to carry him home. He's with the C.'s now.

Roger-- Fonz, I think we need to have a talk.

Fonzie-- Oh? What about?

Roger-- Joanie....

Fonzie-- What about Joanie?

Roger-- Fonz, you've been very protective of her lately. Whenever she has a problem, you are right there wisking her off her feet and carrying her to safety.

Fonzie-- So?

Roger-- Fonz, you're like a knight in shining armor. That can do things to a girl's head.

Fonzie-- Roger, what are you trying to say?

Roger-- That maybe you should start letting her handle her own problems.

Fonzie-- Are you crazy? She's in no shape to handle this by herself! Besides, I promised Richie that I would take care of her. And the Fonz does not break promises.

Roger-- I think this stems deeper than keeping a promise to Richie.

~ FONZIE LEANS BACKWARD AGAINST HIS BEDROOM DOOR SILL AND CROSSES HIS ARMS.~

Fonzie--Ok, Roger. *YAWNS* I can already tell that you are not going to let me get any sleep until you get everything off your mind. So, go ahead....spill.

Roger-- Well, Fonz. As your friend and Joanie's cousin, I feel an obligation to say something. It's just that....well, Joanie and you seem to be very close lately. I notice the way you look at each other. At first I thought it was just my imagination. But, now you are ready to go after Chachi because he hurt Joanie. But, Fonz, Joanie also hurt Chachi. Chachi is only reacting to his own hurt feelings. And since you are his cousin, I think that you should be comforting Chachi instead of Joanie.

Fonzie-- Are you nutso? You want me to comfort that...that....that bum? Look, I'm not denying the fact that Chachi has a right to be upset, but he's acting like an idiot.

Roger-- I remember when you and Ashley broke up. You weren't exactly acting like a saint. But, we all stuck by your side. We took you up to that single's retreat to cheer you up and.....

Fonzie-- Roger, you all drug me up there against my will. Then you got bamboozled by a bunch of chicks and wound up spending the night locked in a sauna.

Roger-- And we did it all for you!

Fonzie-- Roger, I appreciate the advice. You're lucky I don't kill you, but I do appreciate the advice. But, it's late and if I don't get enough sleep, I'll be very cranky in the morning.

~FONZIE TAPS HIS FIST AGAINST THE WALL AND THE LIGHTS GO OUT. HE THEN GOES TO BED. ROGER SITS IN THE DARK, WORRYING.~

 Well, thank you! I'm glad you all are enjoying my story. At least that makes me feel like I'm not spending my time writing it in vain. Fonzie and Joanie will get together...if even for a few dates.....but I'm still working out whether or not they belong together and should stay together. Like any writer, I like the characters I write about to come alive and have a voice of their own. I'm trying to do things that are in character with them. Of course, Roger, Marion, Howard and Chachi are not going to be happy about Fonzie's and Joanie's getting together (Fonzie has a wild reputation with women and he is so much older than Joanie). But, Fonzie has proven to be an awesome person and has won the respect of Joanie's family. Then, there's that whole divorce thing to consider, and how each one is going to handle that. And SOMEHOW I have to get Chachi into the future where he stars in Charles In Charge (I've got a couple ideas for this but haven't been able to choose which one is best.....yet.)
