I and my family have been effected by Lupus. Me because I have it and my family because they care about me. For those of you who don't know what Lupus is, a definition is provided.

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. The body's immune system normally makes proteins called antibodies to protect the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials. These foreign materials are called antigens. In an autoimmune disorder such as lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against "self." These antibodies, called "auto-antibodies," react with the "self" antigens to form immune complexes. The immune complexes build up in the tissues and can cause inflammation, injury to tissues, and pain.

For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few organs. For others, it may cause serious and even life-threatening problems. More than 16,000 Americans develop lupus each year. It is estimated that 500,000 to 1.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with lupus.

Sorry to hear about your ailment. You're much too young to have to deal with that. Thanks for the info though, I've heard of Lupus before but never really knew what it was.

I'm so sorry that you have Lupus. My doctor thought I had it too but, I took the tests and he ruled it out.

It just has to be so hard for you......... I just hope that you don't get too much pain. :(

I did a nice long report about it for health class...since one of my greatest friends *cough YOU cough* has it. *shrugs*(I'm not very "out there"). I hadta write a report on some body system and our group was assigned uh...this system...and lupus was one of the things we could write about...and I told em if any of them picked it I'd kill em. I got an A on the presentation *dances* O...I'm getting off topic

Baseball's Tim Raines had Lupus, which forced him into his first retirement. He retired again last year, I believe.
