Japanese baseball superstar Hideki Matsui (Nicknamed Godzilla)wants to play in the major leagues next year. Last year Matsui batted .334 with 50 home runs and 107 RBI's. Some scouts have said he is a better hitter than Ichiro Suzuki. Teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers, Mariners and Red Sox will all be vying for his services next season. Who will get him?

That's tough. The Dodgers are saying now that they won't go after him, the Yankees have the most money and seem to be stepping up their pursuit of him, he may want to go join Suzuki with the Mariners, as for the Sox ???? I think it will probably come down to the Yankees and Mariners. The key is, will he be able to leave the Japanese league - you've seen what they do to guys that try to leave. As a Yankee fan I say let the Mariners have him.

I believe that Matsui is a free agent next year. So technically all it will take is money and Matsui's willingness to go there.

The word is Hideki Matsui and the New York Yankees agreed on a 2 year contract worth 24 million dollars.

Great :( . Hopefully he'll turn out to be another Ichiro and not another Irabu. Where did you hear this, Briandamage, I'd like to read about it and can't find anything on ESPN or the Yankees site. What are your thoughts on the deal?

I heard it on ESPN Radio and the New York Post. It was either the Post or the Times. I forget which one , but it was definitely on ESPN Radio.

My thoughts on the deal is anything is better than Rondell White and Raul Mondesi in the outfield. Yes, the Yankees will be taking a risk on an unproven Japanese player. However, if he turns out to be like Ichiro, the Yanks struck gold. If he turns out to be another Irabu, he's only signed for two years. I say why not?!?

Thanks!!!! I'll keep checking on their site. I agree about White and Mondesi (though 24M is not chump-change), let's just keep our fingers crossed.

I know I will. Maybe the reason that you haven't spotted it yet is because the deal can not be made official until next week.

Well, it took awhile, but Hideki Matsui finally signed a 3 year $21 million deal with the Yankees.
