View Full Version : That would have been cool!

Here's something to think about...
Think of a movie with a male and female lead that you think Lucy and Desi could have been good in.
For instance...
I don't have a specific, but I think they would have been cool in a film noir. Lucy as the femme fatale, Desi as the detective/insurance agent/private eye/etc. They both smoked enough cigarettes to qualify. :)

Congrats dearie, this is a great idea! How about My Best Friend's Wedding with Lucy in the Julia Roberts part trying to break up Desi marrying Lana Turner?

Notting Hill? Hell, that could almost be biographical! Lucy is the big movie star, and Desi the guy chasing her, who nobody thinks has got a chance. He wouldn't necessarily be a bookstore owner though. Maybe he could own a music store, and play the instruments after hours!

There's something about Lucy? Nah, i dun't see Lucy putting that in her hair! I can see Desi getting his thing stuck in his zipper though, he seldom wore underwear!

Umm... Bringing Up Baby? I can see Lucy playing that kind of screwball role for obvious reasons, and Desi could do the Cary Grant role there. Lots of pop-eyed goggling and getting very frustrated. Actually he could probably have done more than one of those Cary Grant comedies. Little for Lucy to do in Arsenic And Old Lace though of course,

Liar, Liar,Lucy stars in the Jim Carrey part as she has plenty of screen experience in this type of situation! Lucy Ventura Pet detective as Lucy has even more experience working with animals, and i am not referring to Jack Palance! Dumb and Dumber, Lucy and Viv try and find Rudy Vallee in Aspen and run the gamut of adventures while trying to outsmart each other getting to him first! Lucy on the toilet is a riot. The Cable lady, stars Lucy as a nut case who forces people to watch a certain comedy show over and over.

Um... Mary Poppins?! Lucy as Mary, and Desi as Bert, although he'd have to promise not to attempt a Cockney accent. Everybody has always wondered just what exactly Mary's relationship with Bert was, so maybe then we'd get to find out!

Lucy as Dolly and Desi as Horace, or even better, there must be a movie where the lead actress is slated to marry one guy but the guy that's better for her is just around the corner but she doesn't see it. The guy she's supposed to marry played by Gary and the guy she should marry played by Desi, ok, maybe i'm overreaching!

How about Overboard, the movie with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Put Lucy and Desi in those roles.

Lucy GUMP, the whole world revolves around this person, oh, never mind that's already the case for most of us! Arnaz versus Arnaz, these two parents fight for custody of little Ricky! West Hollywood Story, these two rival gangs stake their territory while Lucy attempts to sing Maria! An affair to remember, Lucy plays the Kerr role and Desi Cary's part. Citizen Ball, at 6 that morning of April 26th, Lucy drops her wig and whispers Henna Rinse!

Mr Hobbs takes a sedative, in this sequel to Mr Hobbs takes a vacation, Desi plays the Stewart rold and the role of Maureen taken by Lucy becomes more scatterbrained! Meet the parents, Lawrence Luckenbill meets his new in laws for the first time! Analyse This That and the Other where Lucy and Desi see Billy Crystal to find out why they acted the way they did while married to each other!

Ok, i swear this is the last one for me this week, are you sorry you started this thread yet Dawsongirl Diva? Jackass the sequel, the true story of Gary Morton and how he preferred playing golf to being with his wife! For the Morton relatives, that was just a joke! And he was a comedian, so he would find that funny himself!

Ooo...Desi and a Cockney accent? That would have to be worse than his Scottish one! I have the plainest American accent known to man and I find Cockney much harder than Standard British.

Another Bogie movie...
The Maltese Falcon
I didn't like that movie, but maybe with D&L, it would have been better.
Oh, here's another- Bogie and Bacall-
The Big Sleep

Philadelphia Story? Lucy in the Hepburn role, Desi in the Cary Grant one. She's remarrying, he's the guy she used to be married to, and everybody but them knows they're supposed to be together. Actually, technically speaking I suppose it should be High Society, the musical version of The Philadelphia Story, shoudn't it. Maybe we could sneak in Vivian Vance and William Frawley as the two reporters who turn up to do a story on the wedding, and wind up getting mixed up in it all!

How about "Pillow Talk"--I could see Lucy and Desi sharing a party line., Lucy being a career woman, and Desi being a song writing ladies man who meets his match. Instead of pretending to be some bumpkin from Texas--he could pretend to be a bumpkin from Cuba. Only problem with this (of course) is she would instantly recognize his voice.
So idea #2 is from another Day/Hudson film--"Send Me No Flowers" where Desi could be the hypocondriac husband convinced he is dying and trying to find a new husband for his wife, played by Lucy.

I LOVE Pillow Talk! Great suggestion!
I have Send Me No Flowers on tape, but haven't watched it yet.
I have to throw Lover, Come Back (the Hudson/Day version) in too. :)

Lucy as Sally and Desi as Harry from "When Harry Met Sally." Although I'm sure Lucy would be horrified to do that scene in the resturant, as she took her name off of the credits of that Tom Cruise movie because of the sex scene! They could give that part to Desi instead! ;)
How about "South Pacific", although it could take place in Cuba instead. Lucy would be Nellie, Desi would be Emile (although he would have a Cuban accent instead of a French one and the name would be changed to Emilio). I could see Lucy singing: "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair.." Someone mentioned henna rinse before...
And "Fools Rush In" would be great too. That is with Matthew Perry and Selma Hayak. For those who haven't seen the film, it's about a couple who rush into marriage (they have a baby on the way) and they are two very different people who have to get used to eachother's culture (she's Mexican, he's American). It is a funny, cute flick. Actually, in the movie Matthew Perry delivers this line to his wife: "Lucy, you have some 'spainin to do!". So it would be perfect for Lucy and Desi.

I like that one. They can do an updated version of ILL 30 years later, where Ricky has gone from being a nightclub singer in the '50s to being a wedding singer in the '80s. You are right, Desi is a better singer than Adam, but I doubt that he would be able to duplicate the part where Adam sings at the bar mitzvah in Yiddish! That would be a disaster!

The movie was "All the Right Moves". Gary Morton was executive producer and I think she was involved somehow too, but didn't want her name on the credits for that reason.

Lucy and Gary were on the Board of Directors of 20th Century Fox through their friendship with Marvin Davis, back in 1983 when they produced this one film All the right moves with Tom Cruise, but Lucy being very prudish in such matters refused to have her name on the film as there was this one scene involving sex between the two stars of the film. The following year Tom became a star with Risky Business. This film which also starred Craig T Nelson who went on to Poltergeist and is currently on TV's newest dramatic sensation CSI, got some good reviews, it was about a kid, football star struggling with his future, just the sort of film that would appeal to Lucy!

Craig T Nelson's on CSI these days, just to go completely off topic? I've seen him in some Law And Order rip-off called The Practice or something, but not in CSI yet. Mind you, we're usually at least a year behind over here. Four years, in the case of Law And Order!
How about something swashbuckling for Lucy and Desi? Maybe a musical Romancing The Stone?! I'd suggest something Indiana Jones like, but the women tended to be a bit pathetic in them, and I can't see Lucy being a screaming ninny.
