View Full Version : Carroll O Connor could have made atleast one guest appearance on the spinoff "Gloria"

I just always found it found it funny that the Archie character never guest starred on none of the AITF spinoffs. I can accept not appearing on Maude or the Jeffersons because he didn't have a relationship with the characters on those shows. But Gloria was his daughter and not one appearance? And both Archie Bunkers Place and Gloria were on the air during the same time so it should have happen.

If you read a few posts on the ABP board, you'll see that Carroll did do a pilot for Gloria. The writers of the Gloria show were dissatisfied with this pilot, so they filmed another pilot. The second pilot w/o Carroll is usually shown while the one with Carroll usually isn't shown. Who knows? Maybe they will come out with Gloria dvds and include the first pilot.
I'm not sure why Carroll didn't make other appearances though. I guess we just chalk it down with Dana Plato. The Kimberly character on DS went to the Eastland school for awhile, but yet we only see Kimberly in an episode or two. I know the Kimberly character transferred to a public school toward the middle of the series, but you think she would've made more than one or two guest shots on FOL.
It's a mystery.

Well the pilot with archie should have been the episode shown and it the show Gloria would have made more sense to me. Also George or Louise Jefferson did not appear on their spinoff-"Checking In"

I would say 'Checking In' is a really rare show. I don't think too many people even remember it. I think it was just one of the few episodes wonders. That might explain why George and Lousie never made an appearance. Can anybody confirm if Checking In only had a few episodes?

I just checked www.imdb.com and Checking In was on in 1981. It doesn't give an end year, so it probably didn't have that many to start with.

It only had 4 episodes and it might have been longer if george and louise were on the first couple of episodes.

You are right, George did go to Florence's job, but it was a Jefferson episode not a "Checking In" episode.

The originally unaired-by-CBS "Gloria" pilot, featuring Carroll O'Connor as Archie, airs as part of the "Archie Bunker's Place" syndication package, while the second pilot airs as part of the "Gloria" package. The ABP/Gloria episode is evident from the opening credits, which start with Carroll O'Connor in "Archie Bunker's Place", then "Starring Sally Struthers" and the rest of the "Gloria cast.
Carroll was originally supposed to be involved in the behind-the-scenes production of "Gloria", the same way he was involved with the production of ABP. I believe he either wrote or co-wrote the original pilot, and other ABP writer/producers were involved. But CBS was unhappy with it, and installed a different production team to do another pilot and the subsequent series. O'Connor then refused to have anything more to do with "Gloria".

What if Carroll's pilot was shown instead of the 2nd pilot? Could 'Gloria' last longer than it did? Carroll could've kept making appearances and that might have made people tune in and see it. Opinions?

Yeah I think if Carroll O' Connor made more Guess appearances the show probably would have last longer. Someone stated that he made a appearance on Gloria becauase the pilot was on a Archie's Bunkers Place episode-I can't count that as a appearance-to me it has to be after the pilot-especially if the pilot is shown on the parent show.
