Personally, I prefer Darrin #2 (Dick Sargeant). #1 was always too nervous (but who wouldn't be, in his situation?!) Isn't it weird that both actors shared the same first name in real life?! A friend of mine & I thought that the change in actors should've been worked into the show. For example, a spell could've been cast on Darrin, making him look and sound different. Samantha, then, would cast a spell so that all mortals who already knew Darrin would be unaware of the change. Naturally, the mystic people in Sam's circles would be aware of the difference.

I vote for Darrin #1 (Dick York), for sure. Played the part much more believable... for instance, he seemed to be more scared of witchcraft. His way of yelling out "Sam!" was better. Even his voice was better! Remember, too, he had an advantage of being Samantha's "first" husband, and the show just did not look right after he left. In fact, if York was able to stay on the show for the full eight seasons, "Bewitched" would probably move up on my list of favorite T.V. shows (it's around #4 or #5 on my list currently). Anyway, I think Dick York was perfect choice for the part of Darrin.

It's funny. When I was younger, I preferred Dick Sargent (Darrin #2), and was always disappointed when the rerun cycle started over, and Dick York came back on. Sargent seemed like the kinder, gentler Darrin.
But viewing the episodes as an adult, I greatly prefer Dick York. Sure, he's a little more uptight, but he has that great rubber face with all different kinds of expressions. His reactions to Sam's and Endora's spells are priceless. He also has much more chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery than Dick Sargent does.
My Dad and I have talked about this for years, and we always came to the same conclusion. Only Dick York (yes that's right, Darrin #1) could sing "Ya Ga Zoo Zee, Ya Ga Zoo Zee, Ya Ga Zoo Zee, Zim!"

Definitely Darrin #1, no question about it!! Dick York's characterization was definitely more appropriate in his nervousness...Dick Sargent acted too bored about his family situation, with a deadpan, utterly bored tone of voice he would say, "Okay Endora, what are you going to do to me now?" Definitely much grumpier than the first Darrin!

Anyone ever see the Screen Gems Network showing of
Bewitched? If you haven't they had a bit of trivia with each
episode. One piece of trivia that they did was the fact that
Dick Sargent was the ORIGINAL choice by the producers for
Darren, but because of a committment he couldn't get out of
they hired Dick York to take the role;later when Dick York left
the series they went back and finally were able to get Dick
Sargent to take the role.
So even though Dick York was the first Darren it was Dick
Sargent who was the ORIGINAL choice for the role!:)
And that said my choice is Dick York,he had better comic
timing.

Dick York...!
He was exactly what the producer was looking for... a guy who
could really freak out whenever witchcraft hit the fan... a great character actor...! Dick Sargent always acted like he had on too-
tight shoes or something... he just couldn't show emotion the way Dick York did... by the way: is it me or didn't their marriage seem a little unbelievable...? As much as Samantha's husband was always cursing her out... it's hard to believe he loved her...
P.S. Why's everybody always yammerin' about how hot Barbara Eden was in "I Dream of Jeannie"? She had an okay face... but her body was kinda plump and lacked muscle tone... d'ja ever notice how Elizabeth Montgomery could show off her legs any time and any where...? Yeah... that's what I'm talkin' about...!:bye:

To me once the Dick York left it seemed to coincide with the show just generally going down hill.
Dick York had the same quality as Dick Van Dyke and just looking at his face for a reaction was funny enough on its own.
Even yesterday in the episode "A Change of Face" where Darin is looking in the mirror at the office at his nose is priceless.
I really believe that Dick York could carry an episode by himself.
The Dick Sargent episodes also do not have that magic that the first two seasons had which is not his fault either.
The first two years in black and white were classics and while there where many good episodes after that , the story line was getting old. The first two years the episodes where almost believable but then started getting a bit wacky after that.
Dick York "SAMANTHA" !!
Dick Sargent "saaaaaaaaaaaaaam"

Agreed. I also liked the first Gladys Kravitz better (played by Alice Pearce). I was actually introduced to the color eps before the b&w eps when I was younger, and yet I'm still convinced that the b&w eps are waaay better!
I feel that this proves that my opinion is unbiased, since people usually have the tendency to prefer what they were introduced to first.

Darren No 1 by far. Dick York appeared through the seasons when the show was still fresh and entertaining and had the best stories. He was also alot funnier in the role as well. Bewitched should have really finished at the end of the 1968-1969 season as it never really recovered from the change

Without a doubt Dick York has my vote as the best Darrin. He was in love with Samantha and they acted like a young couple in love. I simply found Dick Sargent ineffective in the role. He looked bored and ready to kill Samatha if she dared to use any withcraft. Sargent in my opinion put little effort in the role. York with all his health problems gave the role his all and it showed.

I PREFERRED DICK YORK, HE WAS MORE ANIMATED. HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS TO WHAT WAS GOING ON AROUND HIM WAS FUNNY. HIM AND ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY HAD A CHEMISTRY. DICK SARGEANT WAS NOT BAD, BUT MY VOTE GOES FOR DICK YORK.

yes the great debate!! Dick York was Darrin. He was funnier and had better chemistry with Elizabeth (on screen) and when they did love scenes-they rang true. Think of some of the best episodes: "A is for Aardvark", "Charlie Harper, winner", "If They Never Met", "Three Wishes", or "Business, Italian Style"--could you imagine Dick Sargent in those episodes? Not me, it certainly wouldn't have the same impact. I agree with those who feel Bewitched should have packed it in when York left--the show just never was the same.

For me, whenever Darrin #2 (Sargeant) got mad in an episode, it didnt seem funny- he just seemed mad. But when York did got mad, it had that comedy edge and you could just tell he wouldnt be mad for long.

As I've said before Dick York definately!! I agree with a previous entry that I could never imagine Dick Sargent in some of the classic episodes where Dick York excelled like "Business Italian Style" "Mirror Mirror On the Wall" and "Sam's Spooky Chair"
I always regret that Dick York wasn't able to do one more season (The 1969 - 1970) season 6 because it was still a good season of episodes and some important things like the birth of Adam occured in that season.
(The collection of episodes dealing with Sam's pregnancy with Adam I thought were still excellent however it would have been wonderful to see Dick York as a father on the show a second time)

I never watched a great deal of the show but when i did I preferred Dick York. It is difficult to take the place of departing actor and not be compared. I can't think of show where I preferred the second actor. I know when I use to watch Dynasty in the 1980's I didn't care for Emma Samms' version of Fallon.

the concensus is Dick York over Dick Sargent. Overall I would agree. Mr. York was the original Darrin and appeared on the show during its peak years. He gave the character a lot of heart. I agree too that he had the best chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery. Mr. Sargent gave a drier interpetation. Perhaps a bit too dry.

Dick York (Darrin #1) was the best of the two Darrins'. Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery had such a chemistry on-screen that you didn't even notice that they weren't together. Dick Sargent was just ho-hum and wasn't as interesting.

I choose Dick York. Come on, he's the classic Darrin, he started it all. I thought Dick Sargent was good, but his personality made him another Darrin...Dick Sargent looked a little...older, if you know what I mean. Dick York looked good, sounded good, and was tons more funny.

I just love Dick York and personally I dont really think that Dick Sargent was very good in the role even with his different interpretation of the character. I often find some of his line readings quite rehearsed and there is a lack of spontainity in his perfromance. His retorts to Endora etc also sometimes have a bit of a false ring to them as well. No offense to the man personally but I didn't think he was half as talented as Dick York, who could play broad comedy, physical comedy, great sentimental acting and very serious acting when the scripts called for it.

I liked them both. I give slight preference to Dick York, but Dick Sargent did a good job. Both were great actors. They played the roles differently and I would expect them too they are different actors.
I liked Dick York's energy, his physical comedy and how he responded to the wackiness or strangeness around him. I noticed when he got mad or excited he would say "Samantha" while Dick Sargent always said "Sam"
Dick Sargent's Darrin was more low key. I liked his quick wit and sardonic sense of humor(although sometimes it was inappropriate) There were times that he was written harsher especially toward Samantha's relatives and I never understood that.
I think I read some where that the second Darrin and Samantha seemed to kiss more than the first one did.

Dick York was Darrin! I don't even watch the later episodes with Dick Sargent. York was a far better actor and the chemistry between him and EM was better. Darrin #2 was too blah for me. The fireworks between York & Endora were priceless. That was part of the show's appeal to me,,, the friction between Darrin and the witches/warlocks. Sargent just didn't put enough emotion & body language into the role to make it as entertaining as York did.

I hope you will all visit my new site, "Tall, Dark and Mortal: The Dick Sargent Appreciation Page." You can learn all about that other Dick : Darrin #2, and be sure to sign my guestbook and tell me what your favorite Bewitched episode is from the Dick Sargent era.
http://www.geocities.com/greenronnyg/index.html
It's a real shame to me, as a "Bewitched" fan, that the two Darrins controversy has not died down in these last 30 years and has completely overshadowed the many good things about the show. My attitude is: so what if there were 2 Darrins? There was only one Samantha and for that we should be forever thankful!
But if you insist.....
I'll say that Dick York was the better Darrin and the better actor, while the Dick Sargent episodes as a whole were better and funnier, despite the obvious cast change. I think that might be because I grew up with the later episodes and enjoyed them immensely. I didn't catch the reruns of the earlier episodes until a few years later. I enjoyed those too but not as much.

I saw a marathon recently and it was very obvious that Dick York was much much better in every way, he had much better chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery and could express more emotions than Dick Sargent who was stiff and seemed pissed off most of the time. Dick york hands down, i cant even STAND to watch any shows with #2 ... proponents of #2 will say that Sargent was the first choice for Darrin but wasnt available at the time, etc. ; however, that doesnt stop the fact that #1 was a better actor and a lot funnier / more believable in the role! York really seemed to be upset but later would come to realise he WAS wrong and would act totally contrite and yet stay lovable, #2 would just seem frustrated at all times, showing all the emotion of the cauliflower in a grade school play on nutrition!

This is a no brainer...ABSOLUTELY Dick York!! Why did he never win an Emmy?? He only got ONE lousy nomination! He could play comedy, drama and romance equally well. His Darrin was so much in love with Samantha that I just melt. Also, try to read his memoir, "The Seesaw Girl and Me". He was just as much in love with his real life wife as Darrin was with Samantha!! :D
The first Darrin had better reactions to Endora, Uncle Arthur and the rest of
