My favorites would be in this order:
1) Goodfellas
2)Godfather II
3)Godfather I
4) Casino
5)Godfather III
6)Donnie Brasco
7)Resevoir Dogs
8)The Untouchables
9)Sleepers
10)The John Gotti Story
Donnie Brasco. The Sapranos, which doesn't count for this question, is one of the more realistic, it seems to me, gangster type shows ever.

My favorite gangster movie is "Key Largo" directed by John Huston and with Bogie, Bacall, and Edward G. Robinson (this is the one where he whispers vulgarities into Bacall's ears and she spits at him).
I also like Murder, inc. from 1960 which was Peter Falk's first film.
Bonnie and Clyde, The Godfather, and On the Waterfront round out my top five.

Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). It's about a race track robbery. Very Intense! It's available for sale, and you can also rent it at you local video store. It's in Black & White....If you don't mind watching movies in that format! ;)

I've only seen a few minutes of this, but now that I know it's good, I'm sure I'll see it some time. I like Kubrick and I like Sterling Hayden, a rather interesting actor who Kubrick used again in a really weird role in "Doctor Strangelove," and who was also very interesting in "The Long Goodbye."

I love Dr. Styrangelove, Brandon, I want my friends in Russia to watch that movie.....Most of them never seen old Cold War Classics like Dr Strangelove and Fail Safe. They are sure missing a lot of good films!

I had always assumed that "Dr. Strangelove" was a take-off on "Fail Safe," but actually it wasn't. The two movies were produced simultaneously, each without knowledge of the other until they were into production. Kubrick could often be brilliant. "2001" is one of my favorite movies, although it helped me to read the book before I saw it. Incidentally, there was an interesting remake of "Fail Safe" on TV about a year ago, that I believe was presented live.

Ahh Brandon. 2001 is a great Sci-Fi Movie. Therefore, my friend, I must recommend to you (if you don't mind English subtitles) Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. This the original 1971 version I'm recommending (not the recent one with George Clooney). Both Kubrick and Tarkovsky have similarities and differences in their films. They both have somewhat the same idea. That's what makes both of these films so great. An Eastern and a Western opinion of space exploration. Solaris, Brandon, is available on DVD through The Criterion Collection. :)

I saw the recent George Clooney version and thought it was somewhat flawed, but not a complete waste. I've only seen clips from the original, but will try to get a copy. I don't much like subtitles, but if I know a movie is good, I can put up with them.
One thing I like about "2001" is that it deals with deep questions about Man's past, future, and place in the universe. It really threw down a gauntlet that has not, to my knowledge, been picked up by any other film, except possibly "Contact." But now we're off the subject of gangsters.

My favorite mafia movie, and one I can't believe that no one mentioned, is Martin Scorsese's very first major film, Mean Streets.
There are just so many things that I love about this movie that I could never list them all. Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro are just fantastic in it, and Scorsese...well, what a genius! I also love Scarface, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, The Untouchables, Casino, Carlito's Way and the first two Godfather films. Actually I'm a gangster movie junkie! :dog:
