Can you imagine it? Its the late 60's and Beaver is in college. The times are different indeed drugs are beginning to surface the Vietnam war is beginning and the Beaver isnt innocent anymore. Well at least he isnt catching polliwogs at Millers pond anymore. Beaver is attending State University along with his buddy from highschool Gilbert its just a few days before the break for Thanksgiving and the Beaver and Gilbert are walking to their physics class discussing what they are going to do when they get home for Thanksgiving break.

Gilbert- Hey Beaver are you excited about going back to Mayfield for the holiday.

Beaver- Yea I guess so.

Gilbert- Yea me too I guess, say Beav.. are you gonna tell your dad?

Beaver- I dont know yet Gilbert. Im really worried about what he will think when I tell him.

Gilbert- Beaver, I wish you would change your mind about this whole thing, I think you might be throwing your whole life away, and besides I dont think Larry would want it this way.

Beaver(interrupting Gilbert harshly) Listen Gilbert! You may be my best friend now but Larry was my friend for a lot longer than you dont tell me what he would want you hear?!

Gilbert- Yea Beav Im sorry, Just think about it ok?

Beaver doesnt even acknowledge Gilberts last comment and walks away from Gilbert onto class alone. Gilbert pauses momentarily and looks at Beaver from behind and shakes his head slowly, he cant believe his best friend is about to throw everything away, for a friend he hadnt seen in years.

The scene changes to June in the kitchen whipping up some delight for supper that evening, when all of a sudden the phone rings, with wooden spoon with what appears to be icing on it in one hand she answers the phone

June- Hello
Her face lights up when she realizes its her son Wally on the phone.

June- Oh hello Wally! You and Mary Ellen should come right over the Beaver should be home soon .... Yes I am making the Boston Creme Pie. Ok Wally we'll see you in a bit.

Wally had since graduated college and married Mary Ellen Rogers. They lived in Mayfield and Wally was working as an apprentice at Wards firm.

.........................................................................................................

Thats all I am going to write for now I would like to hear any feedback or suggestions . It seems Beaver has a problem and Im not going to reveal it just yet I will write more later.

The scene changes when Ward enters the living room coming home from work. June enters from the kitchen and goes to Ward and grabs his briefcase and pecks him on the cheek.

Ward- Well, You seem to be in a good mood this evening

June- I am I just heard from the Beaver he should be here this evening

Ward- I must say that is good news, did you phone Wally?

June- No he called earlier, he and Mary Ellen will be joining us for supper.

Ward- Fine! Im going to go into the den for a while and read the evening paper, let me know when Wally gets here, I wanted to go over a few points with him on the McAnally account.

June- Must you tonight Ward? I want everything just right when the Beaver gets here, I dont want you two discussing work all evening, especially now The Beaver hasnt been himself ever since...Well you know ....Larry

Ward- Well it is an important account....but I suppose it can wait until after Thanksgiving, youre right we dont need to put any added stress on the Beaver.

Ward dissapears into the den and June puts away his briefcase and as she heads back to the kitchen she glances up at a picture hanging on the wall of Beaver and Larry when they were children and she fights back tears, she just cant break down not now and not with the Beaver home definitely.

The scene changes to Beaver and Gilbert riding together on a bus on the way home to Mayfield.

Gilbert- Hey Beav, It shouldnt be much more than an hour before we get Mayfield.

Beaver (lost in his own world)- Huh? Oh yea...It will be good to be home.

Gilbert- Cheer up Beav, What do you say Friday you and I go down to the Movie theater and catch that new John Wayne picture , it'll be like old times.

Beaver- Yea, maybe

Gilbert-( seemingly discouraged) Beaver, youre not still thinking about joining the Army are you?

Beaver- No, not thinking about it my mind is made up I am joining Im going to sign the papers this Monday.

Gilbert- Beaver, you know youre folks aint gonna go for it and besides its not gonna bring Larry back.

Beaver(snapping at Gilbert) Listen, If I want your advice Ill ask for it ok? My mind is made up and well I dont know what Im gonna do about mom and dad but they'll understand they will have too

Gilbert- What about school? What about becoming a teacher?

Beaver- I dont know Gilbert. I dont know.

The bus pulls up to their stop in Mayfield and the two young men get off of the bus.

.........................................................................................................

I realize this isnt like a typical episode of LITB not full of humor but I hope you all are enjoying it, Ill write more later when I think of more.

Beaver is determined to quit college for the time and join the army, but this "won't bring Larry back." It's rather obvious what has happened and is happening, but still continue writing, please. This should be melodramatic, but hopefully it's not an all-out tragedy in the end.

The scene changes to Beaver arriving at home and ringing the doorbell, and June opens the door to greet her son with Ward standing behind her.

June- Beaver! Oh its so good to see you, here let me take your bag Ill carry it upstairs to your room.

The two embrace momentarily and Beaver then gives his bag to his mother and shakes his fathers hand.

Ward- Well, son you look well. How is everything up at State?

Beaver- Everythings just fine dad, Hows work?

Ward- Fine, your brother and I are really quite a team, he is really filling Freds shoes quite well.

Beaver- Thats good.

Ward (still talking to Beaver in the foyer) Come on Beav lets go into the den your brother should be here shortly, he and Mary Ellen are going to be joining us for supper.

The two men go into the den and June comes in shortly after Beaver sits on the sofa and while Ward takes his seat with June standing behind him.

Ward- Well I trust everything is fine with school, you know Im sure your making good marks.

Beaver - Oh yea dad they are allright I guess.

Ward- Maybe after you graduate you might think of becoming an apprentice at the firm and all of the Cleaver men can work together?

June(obviously displeased with Wards timing) Ward, at least let the Beaver get settled in before you plan his future for him.

Ward(chuckling lightly) I suppose your right dear we dont want to overwhelm him during his first year of college.

June then notices that Beaver is a bit preoccupied and with her ever so present mothers intuition decides to investigate.

June- Beaver, is there something the matter?

Beaver- Well, Mom, Dad I was wanting to tell you both something I was gonna wait but I guess now is a good a time as any.

Ward- Whats on your mind son?

No sooner than Ward finished saying that the doorbell rings which tells June that her other son is here and she immediately interrupts the conversation, unknowingly delaying the inevitable.

June- That must be Wally, come on you two Wally will be so happy to see the Beaver.

Beaver so wanted to tell his parents about his decision to join the Army, and quit school for now. It would have made the rest of the evening much easier to have gotten it over with earlier. He knew that they wouldnt understand at first but he had his mind made up, and they would eventually support him, he was afterall 18 years old he could join the army if he wanted to. However the news would have to wait for now, he decided he would wait until supper that way he could give the news to Wally and Mary Ellen at the same time and save himself the anguish of having to explain himself again.

The scene changes to the dining room where all are enjoying a nice leg of lamb that June has prepared. Ward and Wally have been talking shop most of the evening then things take an unexpected turn when Beaver is included in the conversation.

Wally(rambling a bit) Yeah dad, I think with a little more work and a little luck I'll nail this account.

Ward- Thats fine Wally, I must say you are coming along quite nicely, as Fred would have said you really are impressing the "brass"

June- Dont you think you two have discussed work enough this evening, the Beaver is home I think we should discuss something that might be interesting to him.

Mary Ellen- Yes Wally, I agree with Mrs. Cleaver Beaver hasnt been here long at all and you havent talked with him much at all.

Beaver- Oh thats allright Mary Ellen.

Wally- No she's right Beav, Im sorry so how is everything at State?

Beaver- Its ok its still the same place you went, you know how it is.

Wally- Yea I sure do

June- Is everyone up for some Boston Creme Pie?

Everyone in the room seems to be in agreement that that was a good idea, so June leaves to the kitchen to retrieve the dessert.

Ward(changing the subject) So Beaver, do you know what classes you are going to choose for next semester?

Beaver(dreading the inevitable but stalling a bit) No not really

Ward- Well Beav its still not to late to start taking some business courses, I know you want to be a teacher but It wouldnt hurt to have something to fall back on.

Beaver- About next semester Dad....

Just then June reenters the room cheerfully with her fresh dessert and she makes her way to Beaver and starts cutting him the first slice.

June- Here you are Beaver, You and Wally's favorite Boston Creme Pie

Beaver(dissapointed that he didnt get to finish) Oh yea thanks mom.

Ward(obviously curious) What were you going to say Beaver?

Beaver- Well dad I just dont know how to say it without upsetting you and Mom but, Ive decided not to go back to school next semester.

June(in shock)Beaver!

Wally- What do you mean quit? Have you flipped your lid?

Beaver- No Wally you stay out of this ok!?

Wally obviously wants to continue but Mary Ellen gives him a look that says now is not the time.

Ward- Well, I see. What do you plan to do if you are not going to school young man?

Beaver- Well....Im gonna join the Army.

June(almost in a point of panic) Beaver! You'll be killed.

Ward- Youll do nothing of the sort, Youre mother and I are paying good money so you can go to State University and you will do just that.

Beaver-Dad I am 18 years old I dont need your permission, my mind is made up.

Wally- Beaver, I oughtta get up right now and punch you right in the gut, cant you see youre upsetting Mom and Dad?

June is so upset by the news that she covers her face with her handkerchief and goes into the kitchen and Mary Ellen goes in to try and console her.

Ward- Well I hope you are proud of yourself Beaver.

Beaver- Dad I have to do it.

Ward- And may I ask why?

Beaver- You wouldnt understand dad and I dont expect you to.

Ward- Is it because of Larry being killed? Beaver, do you want to do to your mother and I what Larry's death had done to the Mondello family?

Beaver- Well no dad, but I have to do this. Larry and I were best friends so long I feel like I owe it to him...

Ward(interrupting) What? To avenge his death? Son do you realize that this is the worst war the United States has ever been in that the casualties are mounting more and more each day?

Beaver unable to answer his fathers question sits there staring at the floor.

Wally- Beaver, Dont you do this to Mom and Dad!

Ward- Wally, please let me handle this

Wally gets up and goes into the kitchen with Mary Ellen and June

Ward- Beaver, I know you are hurting inside, and I know that it hurts to lose friends. I lost friends in World War II but I dont think you understand the magnatude of what you have decided to do here.

Beaver- Dad, I realize Im gonna hurt you and Mom but I need to do this.

Ward- Beaver, Your mother and I just dont want to lose you like so many mothers and fathers have had to do since the onset of this war. We have always felt ourselves lucky to know that you and Wally would be spared from it and now your decision to volunteer is obviously upsetting to us. However you are right you are 18 and there is nothing I can do to stop you.

There is a moment of silence between the two Ward knows that Beaver is going to do this and he knows that it is going to be especially hard on June, but Beaver has made his mind up and he really could not stop him.

Later on after supper, the Beaver goes up to his old room and lies on the bed and just thinks as his mother enters the room and Beaver sits up.

Beaver- Mom, I know I have probably hurt you but...

June- Beaver, Let me say something. I know that you hurt deep inside after Larry died and thats understandable, it has to be hard to lose such a close friend, but Beaver what I cant understand is that you would want to risk your life and volunteer for an Army that you know is just going to send you off to that horrible place.

Beaver- Mom, Ive got to do this for Larry

June- But why Beaver?

Beaver- This is probably going to sound a little silly but when me and Larry where kids we made a pact that we would always stand by one another and always be blood brothers.(Beaver losing his composure a little crying)...Mom I wasnt there for him he died and where was I? I was off at college living it up while he was defending our country.

June goes to Beaver and hugs him tightly

June- Beaver, Larry chose not to go to college and he was drafted its not your fault.

Beaver- Maybe not but I should have been there with him mom Im not any better than he is I should have been by his side.

June- Beaver, You musnt think like that.

Beaver- Mom I know you dont understand and I know You,dad and Wally will never approve but I have to do this and I am going to.

June sees the determination in her sons eyes and as heartbroken as she is, she sees that it will be no more use to try and discourage him from doing what he was going to do.

June- Beaver, I wish you wouldnt but I see that you arent going to change your mind. I love you and Wally both so much and it would hurt me so much if something happened to either of you, but you are a man now and I have to let you do what you think you need to do, your father and I both agree.

Beaver- Thanks mom, Dont worry Ill be coming home soon.

June didnt reply to Beavers last remark she just hugged him and left the room and tried desperately to remember him as a little boy.

The scene changes to the following Morning Thanksgiving morning to the Cleavers, June, Ward, and the Beaver enjoying breakfast. All are trying to be pleasant and try not to bring up anything about Beavers decision, Beaver not minding this at all is keeping somewhat silent.

June- Beaver, How are your eggs?

Beaver- Oh fine mom.

Ward- They must be you've eaten three helpings.

Beaver- Oh, I didnt really notice, they are good though

June- Well , Im glad you like it Beaver.

Ward not being able to resist it any longer changes the subject some.

Ward- I dont suppose you'll get meals like these when you join the Army, No sir when I was in the Navy the cuisine wasnt what you would call delightful.

Beaver(obviously agitated)- No I dont guess so.

June- Please, can we avoid this conversation at least today it being Thanksgiving and all.

Ward- No June, I think it needs to be addressed, I certainly will not encourage the Beaver to throw his life away...

The conversation is ended abruptly when the back door is knocked and June goes to answer it thinking it is Wally and Mary Ellen, however to her surprise it is Wally's longtime friend Eddie Haskell. Eddie is now a Banker and the Mayfield Savings and Loan and the years have been good to Eddie and being the same old Eddie he is quite boisterous about it.

June(opening the door finding Eddie) Oh hello Eddie

Eddie- Hello, Mrs. Cleaver, my my you are lovely as ever.

June- Thank you Eddie. Wont you come in and have some breakfast.

Eddie- Oh no, My maid Lena prepared a srumptuos meal for me this morning, I was just wondering if Wally were here?

June- Not yet Were not expecting he and Mary Ellen for a couple of hours.

Eddie- Oh thank you Mrs. Cleaver (noticing Beaver) Oh hello Theodore, I didnt know you were home from State? How is everything at the old Ivy halls?

Beaver- Allright I guess Eddie.

Eddie- I suppose you and Mr. Cleaver are very proud of Theodore he may perhaps show the potential we all knew he had.

Beaver(losing his cool) No Eddie, I dont suppose I will reach my potential and no one is too proud of me either, Im not doing well at State my grades are barely good enough to get me by and to top it all off to finish out my dissapoint ment to everyone Im quitting and joining the Army this Monday.

Eddie for the first time in history was stunned without a reply.

Ward- Beaver! You have no right snapping at Eddie that way I think you should apologize.

Beaver- I will not, you cant control me anymore dad?

Eddie(obviously knowing he came at a bad time and that his sarcasm would not be needed) Hey thats ok Beav, Ill just come back later to see Wally.

Beaver leaves the room and June and Ward just looks at each other. What had happened to their little boy, Why would he choose to volunteer for a war that was an obviousl losing battle, How could a friend mean so much that he would throw his own future away.

The scene changes to Ward, June, Wally, Mary Ellen, Eddie Haskell, and the Beaver all sitting in the living room after a delicious Thanksgiving dinner that was prepared by June and Mary Ellen. Eddie had attended because Wally found out that his parents were out of town and Eddie had no one to spend Thanksgiving day with, June then obviously invited Eddie to join in.

Eddie- Mrs. Cleaver it was good of you to invite me to partake in the meal this evening it was quite delicious.

June- Im glad you enjoyed it Eddie.

Eddie- Oh yes, I was quite fond of the stuffing. Lena was going to prepare Goose but your turkey was quite good Mrs. Cleaver.

June- Thank you Eddie.

Everyone is engaging in small conversation except for the Beaver who seems to be in his own world.

Ward- Beaver, do you want to go into the den with Wally, Eddie and I and watch the game?

Beaver- No thanks dad

June- But Beaver you have always enjoyed watching football on Thanksgiving.

Beaver(sounding irritated with everyone) Can a guy not just sit here without getting the third degree.

Ward- Now listen here Beaver Ive had just about enough of your attitude this evening, now just because you have decided to do the most irresponsible thing of your life does not mean.....

At this time the doorbell rings and the room goes silent. June goes to answer the door because she knew who the visitor was.

June- I'll get it

Ward- Were you expecting more company dear?

June doesnt answer Wards question she just goes to the door to let in her visitor. When she opens the door to everyones surprise they all see Mrs. Mondello at the door. She had definitely aged quite a bit but she seemed to be strong. The Mondellos had moved back to Mayfield a few years before and shortly after the move Larry was drafted into the Army and shipped off to Vietnam, and of course later killed.

June- Oh Mrs. Mondello Im so glad you could make it.

Mrs. Mondello- When you phoned this morning I made plans to come by this evening.

Ward- Its so good to see you Mrs. Mondello, here let me take your coat, can we offer you some Turkey or anything?

Mrs. Mondello- Oh no Mr Mondello and I have already eaten, I just came by so I could speak with Beaver, could we be alone?

Ward- Why yes, of course you can use my den

Mrs. Mondello (addressing Beaver)- Wont you come talk to me for a minute?

Beaver obviously stunned by Mrs. Mondello's visit obliges her and follows her into the den and he takes a seat on the couch and she sits next to him.

Mrs. Mondello- Beaver, its so good to see you, you have become so handsome.

Beaver- Thank you.

Mrs Mondello- I understand from your mother that you have made a big decision in your life?

Beaver- Yes maam

Mrs. Mondello- May I ask the reason your choosing to join the Army?

Beaver no longer able to control his emotions just starts crying and Mrs. Mondello hugs him tightly and when he regains his composure a bit he tries to explain himself to her.

Beaver- I know its not gonna bring Larry back and I know that I will be risking my life, but we were blood brothers and I promised to never leave him and I did he died and I wasnt there to help him, maybe I couldnt have but maybe I could have. I miss him so much I betrayed him. I feel like I have got to do something, I owe Larry that much.

Beaver loses his composure again and cries, and Mrs Mondello reaches into her purse and hands Beaver a hankerchief.

Mrs. Mondello- Beaver look at me I want to show you something.

She reaches into her purse again and hands an envelope to Beaver. He does not open it and just awaits an explanation.

Mrs Mondello- Thats the last letter Larry wrote me from Vietnam, he wrote at least once a week. He always spoke of you in his letters Beaver, he dearly loved you, but in this letter he spoke of how horrible it was in those jungles and how glad none of us were there to see what was going on. He went on to say how proud he was of you at State and how he wished he could have applied himself more in school and maybe went with you. He said he was glad you werent in that awful place. Beaver he loved you very much and I dont think he would want you to to this.

Mrs. Mondello hugged Beaver again got up.

Mrs. Mondello- Beaver I want you to have that letter, please Beaver reconsider.

Without saying anything else Mrs Mondello leaves the room and exchanges pleasantries with the Cleavers before leaving

The scene changes to the kitchen where Ward and June are cleaning up.

Ward- My that Eddie sure went on and on about his job at the bank didnt he.

June- You would have thought he was chairman of the board.

Ward-(being a bit humorous) its almost unnerving knowing that Eddie Haskell is in charge of so much money.

The two exchange smiles, when Beaver enters the room.

Beaver- Mom, Dad Ive decided to not join the army and go back to State

June(obviously elated)- Oh Beaver Im so glad you changed your mind.

Ward- Yes Beaver I think your making the right decision.

The mood changes a bit when Beaver starts crying.

Ward- Beaver! What is it?

Beaver(crying) Why did he have to die? Why?

June drops her dish rag and embraces her son and Ward does the same. All are relieved that Beaver is not joining the Army but they know the pain of the War will be felt for years to come.

The scene fades to black

that was an excellent story sami dg. i particularly liked the fact that you let june use her quiet motherly wiles to save the day by beckoning mrs. mondello. she did that a couple of times in the run of the show, and it was always so cool because she never said boo about what she was doing. she just did what she had to do. i also thought you did an excellent job with the dialect all of the characters used. when i read the stroy and pretended i was hearing their voices, it sounded exactly as they would speak.
you have a knack for writing. i would say you should lean towards screenplay writing since you set up your scenes well, have excellent dialogue, and wrap up scenes well.
since you said you welcomed constructive criticism, my only extremely minor complaint was that i thought beaver changed his mind too quickly, or at least told them that he changed his mind too quickly. but maybe its just because i wanted to read more of you fine story.
thanks again

Thank you scanman for your compliments. I also agree with you on the issue of Beaver changing his mind too quickly, however I couldnt think of a way to bring it in without being way to melodramatic,so I just let be quick. Thank you however I always welcome constructive criticism because it helps me with future writings.
