Has anybody read this book by Betty Smith? If so, do you like it? I'm currently in the middle of it and it is already one of my favorite books.

I'm just wondering, cause a lot of people I talk to have never even HEARD of the book, so I'm just curious if anyone here has read it or not.

:D

It's about a girl named Francie... it's just like, about her life. It tells about her family back in 1900 and then it tells about her and her brother in 1912. It's a great book, and it gives a more then wonderful example about what life was like back then.

And Titania, I've never seen the movie. I'll check it out!

I found this book at a garage sale last month. I read a few pages and it seemed interesting, so I got it. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but I'll try to this summer. I'll rent the film sometime and check it out.

I've read the book, written essays, and have seen the film, lol. It's a great story, kinda lengthly, but it was worth reading, IMO. However, I must say, the film wasn't too great.

LOL It's insane! I can get strangled by those, lol. Well, not really, just that there are more trees in Brooklyn than Manhattan.

I have the book, but I haven't read it yet. I try to read a chapter of a book every night before I go to sleep. I'll eventually get around to reading it.

LOL, I just had to respond to this thread! I'm reading it right now for a book report, I think it's great. I'm almost finished.

Actually there is a musical production based on this book playing right now...somewhere in Connecticut...lemme see if I can find the website...Okay here we go.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (http://www.goodspeed.org/shows/atreegrows.htm)

It's there till Dec. 14, so run to see it! Kerry O'Malley's in it. :D :D :D She plays Katie. The pictures on the site look good, it looks like a very decent production. If I could I'd go see it.

I've read it before, and I love it. It's a wonderful book. If you guys like this one, you should read Angela's Ashes. It's a true story. Really good book.

I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn many many years ago, and I loved it. If I recall, we had to read it for English class.

Hannah, I loved Angela's Ashes too....so sad, all those kids dying, the poverty, and a true story no less. The movie was great yet sad and intense.

Just finished it tonight :) good book! I want to get the movie soon.

My favorite part is after Johnny died and they have to pay for the burial. Francie got the money from the tin can bank and later asks her mother whether she should nail it back down. Katie told her no because they now owned land. Ben's a good guy.. I was glad to read about Francie with him. I hated that Lee guy all along though.

Now I'm going to try and get through Wuthering Heights

I have the movie that I taped off of Fox Movie Channel a few weeks ago. That movie was from the 40's. I've never, ever read that book.

Whoa, chill. Since when is it a classic? I don't see it on any classic books list. I'd like to see one, please.

LOL. You can not be serious! You want a list? Find it yourself. It isn't my issue that you aren't well read, or informed, whichever. How about one of MANY MANY reviews though?

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is now considered an ESSENTIAL part of AMERICAN LITERATURE. As an indispensable CLASSIC, Smith's book appears on reading lists across the country. It has profoundly influenced readers from all walks of life--young and old alike. The New York Public Library even chose the book as one of the "Books of the Century."

There's plenty more, too. Try a search engine. And forgive me if I sounded rude. It just freaks me out that so few people fail to recognize, or even be aware of AMERICAN classics.
