90's nostalgia is already relevant. I mean, look at how people get upset at the state of MTV and Nicklelodeon today, and hope it was just like five years ago.
Anyway, what songs do you think defined the 90s, and will be on all those inevitable 90s compilations in ten years?
And please, Mossopp, enlighten us with a Scot's point of view. :)
My list:
Basically, it's all the songs I remember having an impact being on the radio and MTV all the time...

"Everything I do, I Do It For You" Bryan Adams
"Ice Ice Baby" Vanilla Ice
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana
"Buddy Holly" Weezer
"What If God Was One of Us" Joan Osbourn
"Losing My Religion" REM
"Sabotage" Beastie Boys
"Mo Money, Mo Problems" Puff Daddy
"Ordinary World" Duran Duran
"I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston
"Gangsta's Paradise" Coolio
"Wonderwall" Oasis
"Song #2" Blur
"Tonight, Tonight" Smashing Pumpkins
"You Oughta Know" or "Ironic" Alanis Morrisette
"Counting Blue Cars" Dishwalla

Done for now...

I remember that song. It was a cool song. Did the Cardigans break up or something? You never hear much out of them now. One of my personal favorite 90's songs, that could go on the list is 'Tonight, Tonight' by the Smashing Pumpkins. That was a pretty far out video too.

I was in sixth grade when that song came out, and it seemed that EVERYONE had the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack because of it. I did.

Oh, and I forgot about "No Rain". Love it! "Black Hole Sun". How could anyone forget about that video? The people's smiles still come back to haunt me. ;)

Other songs:
"All Mixed Up" 311
"Don't Speak" No Doubt
"Flagpole Sitta" Harvey Danger
"Jump, Jive, and Wail" Bryan Setzer Orchestra
"Fly" Sugar Ray
That one "standing in a phone booth"song.
"Praise You" Fatboy Slim
"Groove Is In the Heart" Dee-Lite
"November Rain" Guns n Roses

and yes, "Wannabe" by The Spice Girls.

I loved "The Sign"! It came out when I was in like, first or second grade, and I always thought the lyrics went, "I saw the sun, and it opened up my eyes, I saw the sun." Yeah, I was a little crazy... but my favorite was definitely "Fly", that Sugar Ray song... I used to sing it all the time at summer camp and drive the counselors crazy with it... now I can hardly stand it! Oh, and "All that She Wants", that other Ace of Base song... that was from my 1995 summer, I think, going into second grade... or sometime... whenever....

Ok Cokies - here's a Scot's point of veiw! ;)

'Design for Life' - Manic Street Preachers
'Parklife' - Blur
'Lovefool' - The Cardigans
'Common People' - Pulp
'Girl From Mars' - Ash
'Fools Gold' - Stone Roses
'Roll With It' - Oasis
'The Sign' - Ace of Base'
'You Outta Know' - Alanis Morrisette
'Born Slippy' - Underworld
'Female of the Species' - Space
'I Am, I Feel' - Alisha's Attic
'Joyride' - Roxette
'Trash' - Suede'
'Inbetweener' - Sleeper
'Street Spirit' - Radiohead
'There She Goes' - The La's
'She's On the Phone' - St. Etienne
'Finetime' - Cast
'Word Up' - Gun
'The Day We Caught The Train' - Ocean Colour Scene
'Staying Out For The Summer' - Dodgy
'Queer' - Garbage
'Local Boy In The Photograph' - Stereophonics
'Mulder & Scully' - Catatonia

As you can see, there are a lot of Britpop bands in my list. I guess that's cos the whole Britpop scene was really kicking in just as I was entering my second year in high school and all those songs just bring back memories of that time.
If I think of any more I'll post 'em later.

Some of those are exactly what I thought you were going to put down. ("Design for Life" ;) )

But out of those, only a few were popular in America.(Of course, Britpop in the US was only limited to the infamous Oasis/Blur feud)
"Female of the Species"! I remember that song!

Yes, those are the correct words (I'm sooo embarrassed that I know the words to Spice Girls songs!! )
I was a bit of a closet Spice Girls fan in the beginning. They sucked later on though.
Sporty's solo stuff was ok. I dressed up as her at school one time. Did you ever see the video she did for 'Goin' Down'? Maybe the song had a different video in America but over here she was wearing a wee kilt and a black top and she had her hair all crazy and spikey and she was dancing around in an old abandoned car park. Well, someone told me that I looked like Sporty in that video (this was before she put on loads of weight) and that I should dress up as her for a laugh! I suppose I did look a wee bit like her.....but I got made fun of by everyone at school for weeks afterwards!

Oh God, this is sooooooooo off-topic!! Sorry guys!! :D

Garbage was one of the "IT" bands in middle school. Nobody didn't have at least one of their albums. Either the first or Version 2.0.
But their defining song for me that'll always bring back memories is indeed "Stupid Girl".

I did read everyone's lists but my memory is bad so forgive me if I repeat.

I agree with alot of what has already been said, but here's a few songs that I don't remember seeing on anyone's lists:

Freshmen- The Verve Pipe
Truely, Madly, Deeply- Savage Garden
One Headlight- The Wallflowers
Fire Water Burn- The Bloodhound Gang
#1 Crush- Garbage (though since only one song by an artist would be likely to make it onto a compilation album, I think Stupid Girl is a better choice)
I'm Just a Girl- No Doubt
Closer- Nine Inch Nails
Mr. Jones- Counting Crows
One Week- Barenaked Ladies
Mr. Wendel- Arrested Development

And how could all of you overlook Marilyn Manson? Love them or hate them, you cannot deny their impact in the 90s. I would chose "Beautiful People" as the song that would likely make it onto a 90s compilation album.

One more BIG oversight (unless I just missed it when I read y'all's lists): Green Day. I would pick "Welcome to Paradise" or "Longview" (that's the "masturbation's lost its fun" one.....we all remember that one now don't we?)

And Cokies....that "phonebooth" song was called "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods

Gosh, Seattle was crazy 10 years ago. At least it seemed like it when the "grunge" thing hit. I worked up there and the buzz was strong. I even had friends in bands.

My choices for 90's songs:

1. "We Die Young" Alice in Chains
2. "Walk" Pantera
3. "Even Flow" Pearl Jam

(more later)

The reason you haven't heard '#1 Crush' is cos it isn't available on any of Garbage's albums. If you wanna hear it you'll need to pick up a copy of the 'Romeo & Juliet' soundtrack.
