I'd also have to go with the cone of silence and shoe phone. And if Hymie counts as a gadget then him too. :p

...that clear plastic wall that would drop from the ceiling in Maxs' apartment?
It was meant to stop bullets in the event of a gun-fight...but was SO funny when Max used to run into it ALL THE TIME!

Remember the episode with Carol Burnett and when Max was explaining all the gadgets in his apartment? Where Max tried to lower the invisible wall but he used his TV remote instead of the actual controller to try and lower it. Now that was funny :D

And I also remember thinking it was fake...until I saw they left nose prints on it occasionally!

My vote is for the wall too. But that briefcase with the ladder in it was a close 2nd.

The Shoe Phone and The Cone of Silence.
I also like how Max would unlock a series of locks on his apartment door and then open the door from the other end!

I agree that the Cone of Silence was the best gadget...followed by Max's shoe phone...
The shoe phone made for some great gags ("Pardon me sir, I know this may sound strange, but I think your shoe is ringing"), but the Cone of Silence totally ruled!
My favorite Cone of Silence bit was the one in which the Cone kept going up and down all during Max and the Chief's conversation (forcing them to stand up and sit down each time the Cone moved), till finally it went down, totally crushed the Chief's desk, smashing it to bits, and left he and Max trapped under there, sitting on the floor... I have that ep on tape and still crack up every time I see it....
I also loved the fact that when Max and the Chief were in the Cone, they could never hear each other, but everyone else in the room could hear them perfectly... what a classic!
(I also loved the invisible wall that Max kept running into...that was great they way they would film Max's face as he crashed into the wall yet again)
There were probably a number of gadgets that were only used in an episode or two, such as the fireplace in Max's apartment which sucked up anything that went near it, and the lighting fixture by the bar which was rigged so as to conk an enemy agent on the head when Max squeezed the trigger on his soda-water dispenser. Of course, Max was the one who always got conked...

I was always partial to the shoe phone myself, although, with all the cells around, it would be rather redundant now....incidently, does anyone besides me recall the time on "Don Adams Screen Test", when a contestants shoe came off and he did the "Shoe phone" thing? ( Don Adams was laughing his head off, but, i have a feeling he did it for the cameras, as he was quite sick of everyone doing imitations of him, by that time )
