Six Feet Under--Nate's baby

It was revealed this week that Nate's old girlfriend is pregnant with his child. I recall when he and Claire went to Seattle and stayed at her house, but I don't remember them sleeping together. I can't even remember a reference to it. I feel I would've remembered if Nate cheated on Brenda. Does anyone else? Did I miss something?
It seems the writers thought of the pregnancy idea after his Seattle trip and made it fit by writing the sex in after the fact. The audience is usually let in on major happenings.
I love the show and think the writing is brilliant, but it feels too contrived this time--not up to par.

I doubt they just thought of it on the fly like that because Alan Ball outlines what he wants to happen for the season. They just didn't tell us everything that happened. That's it. They showed us : Nate, Lisa and Claire eating diner. we knew that Nate stayed there for a couple of days. so they didn't just grab it from the sky. For example, When Claire tells Brenda that she had been emailing Billy, we didn't know she was doing it but in a prior episode Ruth came into her room and asked her what she was doing. At the time, she was talking to Billy online but we didn't know that's who she was talking to.

The whole thing to me was shocking because we were not expecting it but it happened. THere's something fishy about the whole thing, I don't think I trust Lisa.
