What do you guys think was the best series finale of a sitcom? My personal favorite was the Wonder Years. I liked how Daniel Stern told all of the characters' future and left nothing unresolved. The last line with his son made my mom cry for some reason.

I think the best series finale was "Three's Company", but Janet Wood should have been a regular on the spinoff!
Cosby Show had a good series finale, as well as Family Matters!

The best finale in my opinion in terms of creativeness was Newhart. Family Ties, Happy Days, Cheers, and The Wonder Years also had good finales..

My favorite series finale was from the show "Alice" because it ended off just as it should have. It was sad because you knew the show was over but also funny at the same time. I liked how they showed clips of all of the previous shows. I also thought the "Wonder Years" series finale was good, although I would have liked to have seen Kevin and Winnie end up together.

I liked the Perfect Strangers finale, because
it ended with the births of both second-generation cousins. Although I would've loved to see this show run forever, it did end perfectly where it should have, instead of getting stale.

I liked the "NewsRadio" finale. Even though the cast, writers, producers didn't know it would be the last episode, they made sure it could work that way. The last season, without Phil Hartman and with the addition of Jon Lovitz, was very uneven. But the 2 parter at the end, with Jimmy's retirement and everyone except Dave and Matthew moving to New Hampshire, was great. In my opinion, the last scene where Dave finds Matthew under his desk ranks up there with last "Newhart" scene. It was just something I didn't expect.

Wow... the *best* series finale? How do you choose a favorite or best? However, the only series finale that ever had me really talking with people about it for years afterward was the final episode of Quantum Leap. It answered all the questions, but still left everything completely open for personal interpretation. But I'm sure no one else besides myself really considers Quantum Leap to be a sit com...

So as far as traditional sit coms go, I'd say that M*A*S*H was the greatest. I was fairly young at the time, but I remember my mom crying at the end of the episode, and later in life when I had finaly grown to appreciate sit coms as an art form (?), the forst time I saw it I sat there motionless for maybe 10 minutes just feeling like "Wow. That was nice..."

The Wonder Years, Night Court, and Family Ties all left on good notes.

My Least favorites would have to include Seinfeld and Married With Children. Seinfeld's final episode didn't live up to anyone's expectations, and certainly didn't live up to the unbelievable media hype it received. It was a hige letdown, and a bad way to end a great show. MWC's final episode bugged me because it wasn't really a final episode. It was simply a season finale since there was still some question as to whether or not Fox would bring it back for another season, but of course they gave it the axe, and simply tacked on a "Thank you Married With Children for 11 wonderful years" type message at the end of the show. Disappointing for me, since I had been looking forward to a closure to that show for a long time, and they ended up never having a FINAL episode.

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which set the benchmark for sitcom finales.

Leave It to Beaver ended with a "Family Scrapbook" of highlights from past shows. Not a great ending, but a nice one.

The Dick Van Dyke Show had a finale, too, of sorts. Rob finally finished his book and sold it.

I hated the Seinfeld finale! Couldn't they have thought of a better one? I mean really. Ya know who also had a stupid ending was Laverne and Shirley! It didn't even seem like the ending! I didn't think it was until some one told me!

oh easily the best finale ever was newhart. i admitt, wonder years was good, but newhart's was much more clever and suprising. i half expected what happend in the wonder years, although it was touching. as far as the best last scene from a show, tie between newhart and cheers. the last cheers episode wasn't that great, but the last scene i thought really brought out what the show was all about. i find it interesting that no one said "seinfeld" for best. it was ok, but i thought it would be alot better, i think all the media hype ruined it honestly.

I think the best are Happy Days and Mary Tyler Moore. I cry every time I watch the toast in "Passages" or they sing "Long Way to Tipperary" in the last MTM episode. And I really liked the last Odd Couple episode. The worst ending would have to be Mad About You. I feel sorry for the shows that COULDN'T have good series finales because they were just canceled and didn't know that the show was ending (show like Laverne & Shirley and Gilligan's Island)

------------------
"Well, Laverne is sort of childish"

"Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!"

I have to go with "Newhart" also. Very clever script with a few of those big moments you'd always been waiting for (such as Darryl and Darryl speak!) plus it was an inspired and original touch when Bob woke up in bed with his "first" sitcom wife, Suzanne Pleshette.

Off the top of my head, one other I can think of that I really enjoyed was the finale of "Barney Miller." All the cast members got new assignments, Barney and Off. Levitt finally got their long-sought-after promotions, some of the old characters showed up, and tribute was made to depated regulars. It was all done very nicely.

Well, to be honest, I have 2 favorite finales. The first one, is "Happy Days", cause I really loved to see (waited a long time)that wedding http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gifAnd of course the few clips of older episodes. The second one is "Home Improvement" - that was just fantastic. I enjoyed watching the clips in the middle of the show, and I felt that I BE a part of the family, when they said GoodBye http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
I'll miss them both - but I'm happy about every comeback on the screen http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I thought that the SEINFELD finale was great! It was perfect. Those people finally got what they deserved. They had done so many bad things to so many people, they belonged in jail. I also loved how it brought back most of the characters, Soup Nazi, Virgin, the Bubble Boy, etc.
Antother great ending was THE FACTS OF LIFE, my all time favorite show. It is one of the best.

Oh this is an easy question! The best seaason finale of all time has to be "Boy Meets World." How couldn't it be? I mean It was such a tear jerker. Even though I can't believe Mr. Feeny didn't tell his class that he loved them even when he knew that Corey, Shawn, Topanga, and Erik(God forbid!) were his favorites! I was so sad, I mean I grew up with that show... It is definitely the best and I don't think anybody can complain with that! :)

I think we can officialy take 'The Facts of Life' series finale out of the hat, because that was the biggest letdown EVER. I practicly cried because it sucked so much.(jk). How unresolving(is that even a word?) could a finale be? I guess it's just another victim of a crappy finale to a classic show. Much like Seinfeld. Dont even get me started on Married with Children.

I totally agree that the Newhart final episode was funny and I was totally caught off guard with the Suzanne Pleshette thing!
The Cheers and Mary Tyler Moore finales were also great.

I was disappointed with the Seinfeld and FOL final eps.

hmmm...while we're talking about the best endings, lets talk about the worst!!! I absolutely love the Facts of Life (obviously) but that ending was the worst I've ever seen. I mean, the guest stars had about 10 times more lines than the cast just so they could spin Lisa off to another series....I love the FOL with all my heart...but (in the words of Michelle Tanner) Puuhh-lease!!

the most remarkable finale i ever watched was "all in the family" when mike and gloria left. a stunning piece of work. the last segment was riveting, overwhelmingly emotional, superbly written and acted. 4 people saying good-bye within AND outside of a script at the same time--knowing that they had changed the face of television forever. still some 25 years later, if u know your t.v. history, it is phenomenal to watch.

I hated the finales of Seinfeld and Roseanne, and I cried for the finale of Different World, when Dwayne yelled to Whitley during the vows and told her he still loved her. That was probably the best, but I'm hoping that the Friends finale will top that. Melrose Place was good too, I liked the fact that Jane and Kyle got together, and 90210 too, because David and Donna finally got married. Wings was okay, and I was happy that Helen finally got to live her dream of studying with a famous cellist in Vienna.

I agree that Newhart was the biggest surprise ending, in perfect keeping with years of brilliant & creative writing.

The recent finale of 3rd Rock From the Sun, although we knew they were going back all along, was sweet & funny, too.

I like "Mary Tyler Moore"'s finale because it was funny, it was touching, and it wasn't bloated or overlong, like some other finales I could mention ("Seinfeld", "M*A*S*H", "Cheers"). "All in the Family"'s eighth-season finale, where Mike and Gloria move away, was also wonderful -- too bad the series didn't end right there. To this day, I can't watch it without getting teary-eyed.

The "Cheers" finale was such a big disappointment to me. I thought Sam and Diane made a great couple, and I was excited to hear that Shelley Long would finally return. But why did they have her return if Sam and Diane didn't end up together? That last scene in the bar, where Sam is closing up, would have been so much better if that person who knocked on the door was Diane, instead of a stranger wondering if they were still open. Probably the most disappointing finale ever, right up there with Bobby and Pam Ewing NOT being reunited on the "Dallas" finale.

I would say the one from I MARRIED DORA. It was a short lived comedy from the 80s on ABC. On the last episode, the husband gets on a plane to go on a business trip. Then he comes back off and says 'its been canceled'. Then Dora goes 'The flight?!' and he says "No , our series!" then they all wave and walk off the set. HILARIOUS!!!!!!

I would also say the surprise ending to NEWHART!

Most of my favorite shows just ended very uneventfully, like I Love Lucy, but I did like the series finale of Adam-12. Well, let me clarify that. I liked part 2 of the finale. Part one was weird and completely out in left field. Jim was working in narcotics and developed this really bad attitude and Pete was nowhere to be found. But part 2 seemed to sum up this wonderful partnership/friendship. Jim saved Pete's life and put his own life on the line at the same time. The scene where his receives his medal of valor is great. The look on both their faces said it all.

Two other episodes that weren't that bad that I didn't see mentioned yet were The Nanny finale and the Murphy Brown finale. It was too bad Seinfeld took all the publicity away from Murphy.

One series finale that I loved was the one for Unhappily Ever After, where he decides he values his friendship with Mr. Floppy over being a success. Also, someone earlier in the replies wondered what happened in the Alf finale... Basically, if I remember right, he had gotten a message that his friends were going to return for him, so he made plans to leave... I can't remember how the army got word about it, but in the end, he's waiting in a field for his friends, when all these helicopters and jeeps came in and surrounded him, and he had a good one-liner, but I just can't remember it... they left it hanging open, but they closed it up a few years ago with the Alf movie. :-) I really like the page, so far.

I'd say Mary Tyler Moore, MASH and Newhart. I remember that the MASH finale was pre (at least for me, anyway) VCR days...I had to work that night and only caught the last 20 minutes or so...but it was sure shocking and memorable.

MTM had a great finale...but I'd say Newhart was the best...I don't think any show could ever top that, especially for originality.

For some info on the Seinfeld finale, go to www.jumptheshark.com. (http://www.jumptheshark.com.) and go to the Seinfeld comments. There are some interesting theories re: the admitedly unfunny finale.

My favorite 3 series finales are "The Fresh Prince of Bel-air", "Cheers", and "The Wonder Years".
I like the way Fresh Prince ended when the members of Banks Family all go their seperate ways. then it ends with Will turning off the light and you hear Carlton scream,"Hey!!!". Then he comes running downstairs from the bathroom with his pants down and Will says,"I am definitly going to miss you C".
I like the way Cheers ended with Sam alone in the bar taking a final look at everything before closing up. He didn't even have to say a word. You just know how he felt.
The ending to my Favorite show the Wonder Years was great. I like the way Kevin sees everything he knew from his past changing. He finally understood that life nevers goes the way you plan it. He goes back home with Winnie after leaving to "find himself" ands see his friend Paul and his family at the 4th of July Parade. He then tells us what happens to all his family. Sad to hear that his father passes away 2 years later. Anyways I like how it ends with the old Kevin telling his son,"I'll be right there",when his son asks him to play catch.

Woke up and realised, This world's not, So bad after all, Looked at it through, A child's eyes, and, I saw these beautiful, Things that you, Never think about, Like the ocean, moonlight, Stars and clouds, It's amazing how, We don't appreciate, Our blessings, There's plenty of people, Who don't like me, But since there are more
Who love me and, I love myself, Sometimes, it gets tough, It gets tough, But I can't give up, Can't give up, Just take a deep breath, Close my eyes, Feel the love and
Give a smile. I woke up this morning, The sunshine was shining, I put on my happy , face, I'm living, I'm able, I'm breathing, I'm grateful, To put on my happy face~Destiny's Child~Happy Face

I agree that the Cheers finale SUCKED. I hated the Rebecca years, and was so happy that Shelley Long was coming back for the finale, but what was the point if Sam & Diane weren't going to end up together? They are my all-time favorite sitcom couple.

I thought Wonder Years ended terribly and tackily... first of all the "plot" was a weak copy of the plot of the movie The Sure Thing.... Winnie acted out of character throughout the whole show and the whole trust of the series-- this old guy remembering pining away for Winnie Cooper, was blown when they claimed they broke up later on... poor ending-- the viewers deserved much better....

Newhart was the best with Seinfeld as the worst,Roseanne as most confusing and The Larry Sanders Show as most emotional.

Newhart. Its not my favorite show, but that finale was SO creative. Mary Tyler Moore is a tear jerker too, but its not my fav. show lol. Happy Days.. when they show all the clippings to Elvis' Memories..I lose it! LOl. Wonder Years, thats sad too about Jack dying..:( . M*A*S*H is a good finale too. They had a big special on endings on FOX (or some TV special) that showed a bunch of shows finales. Popular was good too. So was Fresh Prince.

I dont know if I could choose between Leave it to beaver or happy days finale. When I watch the Happy days finale I almost cry its so sad! but the last ep. of Leave it to beaver was so nice how they looked thru the old photo album remembering old times... so I guess thoas are my favorite finales :D

My vote HAS to go to "Mary Tyler Moore"!! That was just such a well-written episode. I always get emotional when I watch that group hug scene! Another great one, as others have said, was "Newhart". I've heard that Bob Newhart's real wife suggested that. MASH also had a great finale.

I like the "Perfect Strangers" final episode. First of all it was funny, with Larry and Balki hanging off a hot air balloon, also, it got emotional towards the end. And of course there was a montage to the song "Unforgettable" with many funny, slapstick moments. I only saw it once, but I remember the "Head of the Class" finale to be good. Having the building torn down. To ramble on some more, in terms of the most emotional, it would have to go to "Dinosaurs".
