My favorite whole decade is the 70s.

I also like the late '60s and early '90s (some of it...I like some of the old-school grunge/alternative rock stuff.....maybe it's just because it brings back such vivid memories of my life at that time).

I also like the '80s but only some of it, and I kind of have to really be in the mood for '80s music.

I'd say that the best time for music was the period between 1982 and 1993.
I start with 1982, not just because it was the wonderous year that I graced the Earth with my presence ;) , but because by that time Glam Rock was well and truly out of the way! You can call the 80's cheesy if you wish (and in many ways they were) but three of my favorite bands were born from that decade - Guns N Roses, Roxette and The Bangles (an odd combination, I know!). The 80's were also responsible for Madonna - the greatest female artist of her generation. And with the quaility of the female acts around at the moment, I'd wager she'll be the best for generations to come as well!!
I cite 1993 cos any later into the 90's and you're in serious danger of stumbling accross crap like Latino-pop, Jungle and Garage not to mention drowning in a sea of insipid boybands!

Yes, yes, good to see someone with their priorities straight. :D

In my mind though, the 80s were the low point of Aerosmith's career. They really kicked a$s in the '70s, then declined in the very late 70s-80s due to drug use and breaking up. Their first post-break up album, Done with Mirrors, leaves much to be desired, and while Permanent Vacation is an awesome album (and very 80s!) they didn't put themselves back on the map until Pump and Get a Grip in 1989 and 1993, respectively.

Oh and, sorry, but as the local resident Aerosmith expert/junkie, I must gently remind you to please remember the others in the band. Aerosmith is a "they", not a "him". That's Mr. Joe F'in Perry right there in that siggy o' mine, and we certainly wouldn't want to forget him, nor the others. :D

(BTW, I love that Tiffany cover too! I actually have 3 Tiffany cassettes somewhere back home!)

Happy to oblige anyone with Aero Info...heehee

Dream On first appeared on Aerosmith's self-titled debut album in 1973. It was released as a single and performed poorly, reaching only #59 on the charts. After two more years and two more albums (Get Your Wings and Toys in the Attic, respectively, ....both essential Aero albums), Sweet Emotion was released as a single, which broke the top forty and helped Toys in the Attic break the top 20. This success prompted the re-release of "Dream On" (though gasp!!! I forget why exactly, or who decided to re-release it. It may have been at Steven's insistence because he has always loved it and believed it could be a big success. Joe hates it, if such a thing can be imagined!)

Anyhoo, the re-release in 1975 was a major success, and Dream On raced up the charts and soared into the Top Ten (dramtic, huh?) Imagine, if they hadn't decided to re-release it, Dream On could have been a mere footnote in Aero lore, as opposed to one of their most famous, popular, and enduring songs.

I actually don't own Young Lust yet , (it's the only domestically released Aero album I don't have) so I do not know which particular version of Dream On is on that album for sure.

If it simply sounds like a live version, then it is a version off of their 1998 live album, A Little South of Sanity (a Geffen release.) Young Lust is a Geffen release also (continuing to repackage and make money off a band they lost rights to ages ago  )which is why it's heavy on the '80s...Geffen doesn't own the rights to the early stuff or the later stuff. However, they get around that SNAFU by releasing live versions of songs they don't have rights to, such as Dream On, Sweet E, Falling in Love, and Hole in My Soul. If Steven's voice gets really deep at parts (it almost sounds like Joe is singing) then it's the ALSOS version. That particular version of Dream On would have been recorded live during either the Get A Grip or Nine Lives tour.

However, if that version is backed by an orchestra, then it is a version recorded especially for MTV Anniversary. But I don't think that would be it because I think Columbia/Sony owns the rights to that little rarity. (which of course I own :D )

Now, I am a mind reader, so right now I know you are all thinking "TMI, Bootsy! Too Much Information!" heehee....well you asked after all, wouldn't want to leave you hanging. Let this be a lesson to all of you. Don't get me started on Aerosmith unless you are prepared for the consequences,!

No prob. The really sad thing is I actually knew almost all that off the top of my head. The only thing I had to look up was exact chart positions, because I couldn't remember exactly how bad Dream On did in '73. Now if only I could easily remember minute details concerning my school work.....

If you are interested in another good Aerosmith compilation I would recommend Live! Bootleg. It's got mostly older stuff on it. It's kind of a gritty, very '70s-ish quality though, not highly polished like most live albums today are. But it kind of seems more real that way. Oh Gems is another good complilation of old stuff. Don't bother with Big Ones...every song on that album is on Young Lust.
