Michael Richards (the always around, but uninvited Kramer on "Seinfeld") was asked to play Adrian Monk when "Seinfeld" was coming to an end. Richards wasn't interested and without him, ABC passed on the show.

USA picked it up and cast Tony Shaloub as the OCD detective on "Monk", a role that won him three Emmys.

I never would have watched the show with Michael Richards as Monk. In fact, I only started watching it BECAUSE of Tony Shalhoub.

I did know about that and although he probably would have done a good job in the role, I can't picture Michael as anyone other than Kramer and Tony as anyone other than Adrian Monk!

Also wanted to add that I can TOTALLY picture him as Ambrose Monk, Adrian's brother (played by John Tuturo). John was wonderful in the role, but I think Michael would have been really good as well.

Same here. Tony Shaloub was letter-perfect as Monk. Though, a Seinfeld star DID guest on Monk once - Jason Alexander.
