Whitney now has also been officially picked up. The order for Parks & Rec is for a full-season 22 episodes. No definitive word on the size of the orders for the two freshmen shows yet, but they may be for 13 episodes in line with Community.

This is terrific (and yes, very shocking!) news! The show improved so much, and it definitely deserves another season. Even if it is a short season, I definitely did not expect to see the word "renew" associated with Whitney at all.

Whitney‘s renewal today was a big victory for the freshman NBC sitcom, which had been in serious danger of cancellation. But it also represents a major feat for the multi-camera genre.

This is the first time a freshman multi-camera comedy has made it to Season 2 in four years, since CBS’ Big Bang Theory was renewed in 2008. For a multi-camera sitcom outside of the format’s traditional home, CBS, this marks the first time such a comedy has been renewed in five years, since ‘Til Death was awarded a second season on Fox in 2007. What’s more, we could have two freshman sitcoms accomplishing that this year as ABC’s Last Men Standing is awaiting a renewal too.

It's not that shocking, the numbers weren't all that bad. I think the show's awful but since all of my favorite NBC comedies got renewed...oh well!

Huh? That's not true at all. Mike & Molly got a 2nd season last year and 2 Broke Girls got one this year.

Yeah - does ABC have ANY multiple camera sitcoms?

Well the article (or I thought he was quoting an article, not sure) says its the first time a multi-cam has been renewed since 2008 and the first time a non-CBS one has been renewed since 2007.

Last Man Standing, which currently isn't doing all that well but looks like it might get a renewal anyway. They had Work It, but it was cancelled.

NBC has 2 multi-cams on its line-up next season (Whitney and new show Guys with Kids). FOX has none.

I'm still waiting for a LMS renewal. Everything else has got renewed so far it seems.

LMS was doing pretty well in the ratings until about 2 months ago when it was paired with Cougar Town. I'll never understand why ABC put these 2 shows together as they have different audiences.

ABC for the most part seem to be renewing all their sitcoms. Last Man Standing has a 95 percent chance of getting renewed form what I heard. Last Man Standing did pretty good this year so I am sure it will get renewed. But it's renewals and a couple other shows would be coming soon(shortly) according to sitcomonline and TVBythenumbers.com on twitter. GCB was cancelled. ABC has so far picked up 9 New shows.

CBS has pretty much renewed every single show on it's schedule except for a few.

Not really. I called it in my prediction. It was getting 10 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. And it does huge profit for ABC Studios. Shocked GCB is canceled, though.

Whitney is a complete surprise. Then again NBC renewed Up All Night even. Don't get it.

Repeats killed the momentum from March on. But still it was easily beating Whitney numbers.

NBC's thought plan for next season seems to be "we have so much faith in our new comedy pilots so we're going to pick them all up...but just in case they fail let's renew all of our veteran comedies too!".

Seriously, either they're going to have comedies 3-4 nights of the week or there's going to be a lot of stuff held for midseason.

And one or two either will never air in-season or will be burned off Bent style in the spring.

I think they go with two nights of comedy. Thursdays 8-10pm and an hour elsewhere. Lots of saved for mid-season, like final season of 30 Rock. The Office episode amount is unclear right now.

I think repeats hurt a lot of shows down the stretch. It seems like most of the veteran shows ratings have been down since around March.

Here's a bit of trivia - one of Whitney's assistant directors is Todd Corman, who is the real-life husband of Jennifer Runyon (Another World, Charles in Charge, A Very Brady Christmas, etc.). :D

Ratings drop every year around Daylight Savings Time, I guess because the weather is nicer so a lot of people stay out later. But the drop seemed particularly big this year.

Whitney performed admirably for NBC. They moved it to the tough Wednesday 8pm timeslot against American Idol, The Middle, and Survivor, yet it still pulled between a 1.5 and 1.7 demo. Sure anything below a 2.0 demo is nothing to cheer about, but that beat Up All Night on numerous occasions, which actually had a lead in. I expect Whitney to be NBC's next surprise hit and run for many seasons (just like Cheers all those years ago).

Yes repeats will mess up a flow of a show if it's too many of them

Yea the ratings are down for the 9 and 10:00 shows too. Last nights ratings were really bad. I'm glad Blue Bloods was renewed already or I'd be worried.

I don't know if I can buy that day light savings time excuse because it doesn't get dark until 8pm which means that by 8pm in March and April night time had already arrived. Just like right now, I can see that it will be getting Dark soon from the look out of the window but it's May 12th. A month of ago it was already Dark at 745pm-lol

That is so true. I probably only watch about 2 or 3 shows live any more and even some of those, I stock up the shows on my DVR so I can watch them without repeats. Unfortunately the networks still go by the old way of doing things and they don't care much for people who watch on the DVR because we don't watch commercials. lol

That can be solved by hooking up your tv to the internet.

I have a Wii and PS3 so I watch stuff from online on my flatscreen.

There's also computer projectors so you can have the computer screen projected onto walls or dryboards. I've seen school teachers do that with their laptops so the whole class can see the screen.

But doesn't that mean I can no longer browse the web since it's connected to the TV?

No, the Wii and PS3 have wireless internet connections so you can browse the internet on the television.

Whitney (returns Friday, October 19)

Season-One Story: Deserved or not, there was no bigger punching bag to
come out of last season than Whitney, a semi-autobiographical series
about creator-star Whitney Cummings, a hot comedian with a potty mouth
and plenty of opinions about modern relationships. In a season of
acerbic female comedies riding the Bridesmaids wave (2 Broke Girls,
also produced by Cummings, Don’t Trust the B, and Are You There,
Chelsea?), critics immediately singled out Whitney for swinging too
traditional, with complaints ranging from the show’s familiar, tired
sitcom setups to an extra-loud “laugh track” (that turned out to just
be an overly enthusiastic live audience). But after bloggers and
recappers wrote it off but continued to use it as a reflexive
punchline, Whitney quietly turned into something different: The
relationship between Whitney and her boyfriend Alex (Chris D’Elia)
began feeling real and not just the thing in which to situate the girl
who swears off marriage because she isn’t that girl. The jokes slowed
down a little, the plots became less schticky. “They’ve done a really
good job digging into who those characters are,” NBC entertainment
prez Bob Greenblatt said in July, and while his decision to renew the
show surprised industry watchers, the truth about Whitney is that it
was not an outright flop (like Up All Night, it outperformed both 30
Rock and Community and even tied Parks and Recreation among
18–49-year-olds, even while the second half of its season aired
opposite ratings kingpin American Idol. NBC sister network E!,
meanwhile, remains so high on Cummings that they’re giving her a talk
show, Love You, Mean It, premiering in November.)

Season-Two Changes: Cummings has said that she was frustrated by the
network’s initial marketing of the show, which made it seem like it
was about a character who was “every man’s worst ****ing nightmare.”
This year, she wants to make clear that Mad About You is her template.
That means, Whitney and Alex’s friends will further fade into the
background (the show has even released Maulik Pancholy back to 30
Rock) so there is even more focus on the couple, who tattooed “I Do”
on their ribs last season. Says Cummings: “We’re in it forever now and
there’s no option to leave. We’re two honey badgers in a cage.” More
earnestly, though, she says the changes to the show mean “not being
afraid of pathos.” Cummings pointed to comedies like Modern Family
“that really stick with you because they aren’t afraid of getting to
the truth and to the more emotional things. Mad About You and
Roseanne, I mean, I used to cry at the end of Roseanne … We’re very
interested in doing a show that matters, not just a romp. You can find
comedy anywhere all the time. You can go on YouTube right now and
watch a panda farting on a baby.” As for her show’s move to Friday
nights, Cummings looks at it as permission to stir the pot (though she
was mum when asked for specifics). “We’re doing some stuff that I feel
like first year I wouldn’t have been able to get past the network. I’m
actually thinking the network doesn’t even read the scripts we send
them. I look forward to the lawsuits
