Looking forward to the Mary and Rhoda movie tonight since the show has grabbed me

Will be watching the Rhoda and Mary movie tonight to compare how they were 30 years into the future and how they have changed from 1970 to 2000. Should be a interesting movie

Argh, I only caught the tail end of it and it was making me nervous. It just didn't feel right. I read that they wanted to turn the concept of Mary and Rhoda and their daughters into a series, but no one was willing to buy it. I can see why - from what I saw, there was just nothing fun or amusing that the original series had. I understand it's a movie and it has a different way of things, but they could've at least attempted to inject a little bit of the original spirit. Nothing.

I saw it when it originally aired, and watched it again tonight. It isn't the best reunion movie I've ever seen for sure. It did not capture the original feel of the series at all.

Nope, not at all. And that's not surprising given that, from what I can tell, the only people from The Mary Tyler Moore Show who were involved with this movie were Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper. It was written by a woman named Katie Ford, a former writer for Family Ties. And it was directed by Barnet Kellman, who had previously directed Murphy Brown. They both, at least, had some comedy credentials, but none of it showed in this production. And they had no TMTMS credentials, and that is apparent. If they had folks like Jim Brooks, Allan Burns or Treva Silverman involved, maybe it would have turned out differently (as in better).

Yeah, from everything I have heard it sure sounds like Mary and Valerie Harper deserved better. The Oprah Winfrey reunion was 100x's better.

I was over at my parents (who have cable) earlier this evening and managed to casually watch the last 15 minutes of this. I had forgotten all about the Hallmark Marathon this weekend and for a second or 2 got a little excited that I would finally get to see at least a portion of this flick even knowing forehand how poorly it was received. WOW am I glad I never wasted a Netflix queue on the DVD. From what little I saw, it seemed entirely too far out of step with the show. I simply couldn't enjoy it. It may or may not be a "good" made-for-TV movie but it shouldn't even be associated with the show.

I think this is one of those few instances where simply a licensed name can ruin a movie or show because it automatically conjures up images and quality standards. If they only had changed the names and a few details then I doubt this would be viewed so negatively. Instead it would be seen as a "charming little movie between 2 old co-stars." I automatically think back to the 1998 American version of Godzilla. Everyone hated it simply because it was permanently part of the Godzilla franchise and paled in comparison but really wasn't bad enough to justify all the negativity. Godzilla In Name Only. TMTMS In Name Only.

3. How both are shown dealing with YOUNGER bosses at their older age

I thought it was ok but it could have been better if their daughters were just mentioned and not seen all through the movie. And they could have also given a final closure to all the other characters on the MTM show like Mr. Grant, Murray, Ted, and Rhoda's mother.

Rhoda said she was in contact with Mary's mother, so we know Dottie Richards was still alive. Rhoda's only reference to her mother was, when she caught herself sounding "just like her mother", when she was talking to Mary's daughter, Rose. We should have gotten an update on Martin and Ida, and Brenda (and Benny?). Phyllis, certainly should have been mentioned, if not Lou, Murray, Ted, Georgette, and Sue Ann. :(

I would hope so! LOL At least Mary & Rhoda were played by Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper. LOL
