I have been watching the first 2 seasons of Heat and I have these 2 observations. Firstly, the episodes were much more violent and bloody. It was toned down later on in the series. Secondly, I can see a drastic change in Hugh O'Connor. He smiles a lot more and is not so grumpy in the first 2 seasons. I think that as the series progressed he was getting deeper into the drugs and it shows in his face and his performance as Lonnie. To me he is very likeable in seasons 1 &2. What a shame that his life took such a drastic turn.:(

I preferred the early seasons for that very reason. I liked the gritty feel of the first seasons, which set it apart from a lot of other shows at the time, considering the "small town" location.
I guess a lot of people didn't find the grit believable, but growing up outside a really dirty, hard core rural town, I could totally relate.
By the end, the show had gotten so sappy, I just watched for the eye candy. Then the eye candy wasn't even there most of the time, making me a sad girl.
Did anyone else notice a change when it moved to CBS? Not just storylines, but the actual production quality. It felt like they were doing the "smear some vasoline on the lens" trick all the time. Everything was soft and clean... I just didn't care for it.

I find the CBS episodes to be unwatchable. I like to pretend that they don't exist. My favorite season is the second season (the first season that is shot in Georgia). This is the season with the Joanne character and the chief's kidnapping.
