We've been hearing about the Mother on "How I Met Your Mother" for about 6 1/2 years, but we haven't actually seen much of her beyond a glimpse of her heel and a yellow umbrella.
So whenever the show does introduce her, she'll come with a pretty hefty set of expectations -- which won't make the casting process especially easy, co-creator Carter Bays says.
"It's very tough. There is one school of thought where you want her to turn around and she's Jennifer Aniston because it has to be a huge star," Bays said Wednesday (Jan. 11) at the TV critics' winter press tour. "But maybe it should be someone we've never seen before."
Bays compares the casting of the mother to the process of finding Cobie Smulders -- who had only a few credits to her name at the time -- to play Robin.
"We talked about a few big names at the time, but there was also a feeling because so much of the show hinges on this moment where she turns around and Ted sees her for the first time and falls in love, you want someone you've never seen before," Bays says. "You want to feel like you're seeing this person for the first time too."
