Cliff Clavin Debut?

Does anyone know when did Cliff Clavin join the cast? How was he introduced?

Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) was on the series from the very first episode. He just wasn't credited in the opening credits until season 2.

Its because he was originally trying for the part of norm but then he suggested a character to the castors, they said they would try it and they signed him on.

Thanks. The reason for my confusion is that he wasn't in last night's episodes, don't know the names of the shows. The one where Carla almost gets fired and the one when Sam is interviewed as a former jock.
Maybe they introduced his character slowly?
