1. Aqua, 'Barbie Girl' - You have the Danish to thank for the worst song of the 1990s. Overplayed to the extreme and very repetitive, it's an easy pick for #1. Ironically, after suing Aqua for bashing Barbie, Mattel has since used the song in a few ads.

I TOTALLY disagree. In fact this is one of the BEST songs of the 90's. Some people don't understand that not all songs have to be rock and roll, soul or teenage pop. There is a category called "Bubble Gum pop." It's very creative music that has a catchy hook, memorable melody and easy to hum or sing along to. It's purposely corny and/or tongue in cheek, but that's what makes it so much fun to listen to. It's something like a musical parody and just a great song to listen to and doesn't have to make a earth shattering statement about any social issue. It's just a "happy song". That's all. but it's GREAT!

"Barbie Girl" isn't a bad song. In fact it's kind of catchy. It just got way overexposed to the point that many people got sick of hearing it. Many other songs have suffered similar fates. For example "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion got way overexposed on radio following the release of the movie "Titanic".

Rolling Stone recently tasked their readers with voting on the worst songs of the 1990s - there were plenty to choose from. At least no one had really mastered the use of Auto-Tune yet. Here are the Top (bottom?) 10 worst songs of the 1990s:

10. 4 Non Blondes, "What's Up?" - Lead singer Linda Perry would later write songs for P!nk and Christina Aguilera.

9. Right Said Fred, 'I'm Too Sexy' - The 90s was the decade of supermodels. Right Said Fred wanted to cash in, but instead created a theme song for the models they tried to make fun of.

8. Baha Men, 'Who Let the Dogs Out?' - If you attended a sports game around the time this song was a hit, you heard it as the team rushed the field. Twice over if both squads were named after dogs. Going to a Huskies-Bulldogs match was torture.

7. Celine Dion, 'My Heart Will Go On' - Thanks for unleashing this song on us, Titanic. Radio stations could barely help themselves from playing this tune every 15 minutes. Then there was the awful remix that included sound bites from the film.

6. Hanson, 'MMMBop' - At least they played their own instruments, which was more than you could say of several other boy bands.

5. Chumbawamba, 'Tubthumping' - We hope the band has trouble sleeping at night, knowing that they made anarchist music for so long, only for their tune about getting drunk to be their one hit.

4. Vanilla Ice, 'Ice Ice Baby' - Remember when Vanilla Ice denied ripping off Queen? Remember Vanilla Ice at all?

3. Billy Ray Cyrus, 'Achy Breaky Heart' - Hopefully the last time country music invades pop radio, but I doubt it.

One song that wasn't mentioned that I absolutely can't stand is "Stay" by Lisa Loeb. It's a prime example of the annoying trend of the mid 90's - mid 00's that I call "stream of consciousness" music, mostly done by young female singers. They have to cram so many lyrics in the first 30 seconds of the song, most of which is just random stuff that sounds like it comes out of a diary or a from a therapy session. Then they're out of breath by the time the chorus starts up. I'm glad that trend has seemed to fizzled out.

We'll have to respectfully disagree, You could lock me in a room and play "Stay" continuously and it wouldn't bother me but I couldn't listen to "Nothing Compares 2U" even once in it's entirety without begging for mercy. I've hated that song from the first time I heard it and IMO it will never be a classic.

I actually like Donna Lewis' "I Love You Always Forever" and "Unskinny Bop" by Poison, even though the main riff is lifted from "I Know a Little" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Poison and a lot of bands were exploring Southern rock and blues at that time. Cinderella was, too, with the 'Heartbreak Station' album in 1990. :cool:


But yeah, 1990 was a notoriously bad year for pop as well. Vanilla Ice with "Ice Ice Baby" and the fiasco known as Milli Vanilli were the worst perpetrators. "I Want To Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd, pretty much anything by Snow, and tons of other drecky songs on this list above were the culprits of pop in that bizarre decade. It started out with Milli Vanilli's lip-syncing and ended with Limp Bizkit's riot-inducing performance at the 30th Anniversary of Woodstock. Yechhhh. Limp Bizkit. Haven't we forgotten Fred Durst yet?? puke:

That's okay, I usually think in a way that the 90's kinda ended in 2000. Like 2010 ended the 2000's or 1980 ended the 70's.

I think My Heart Will Go On gets a bad rep. When it was first released it was a decent song but the radio stations kept pushing it because of movie promo.

Mariah Carey's Hero needs to be on this list, it's easily her most overplayed.

Thanks for saying this because I was almost afraid to admit that I love this song... just as a dance song, though. I mean the words can definitely be taken out of context, but it's definitely catchy and has a good beat. But I have heard/read many things about how horrible this song is. I beg to differ, though...

I agree it was definitely way overplayed, but I can't listen to that song now without being reminded of a Seinfeld tribute that was done on one of our local stations. They showed clips of Seinfeld just before the last episode and when she gets to the line about "coming through the door" or something like that, you see Kramer making his trademark burst into Jerry's apartment! :lol: I wish I could find that video!

I actually have the Aqua CD with "Barbie Girl" on it. I got it because of that song. I don't listen to it really at all anymore but if the mood catches me I will put the CD in and listen to it. It's one of those songs that you have to listen to when you are in the mood to hear it.

And I have the Savage Garden CD with "Chicka Cherry Cola" on it. The name of the song is "I Want You" and it's one of my favorites.

I have the Hanson CD with MMMBop on it. My cousin loved Hanson and she was the one who got me into listening to them. I don't listen to the CD a whole lot unless the mood hits me.
