Why isn't Mary Ellen living with her husband? The only episode I've seen him in is the birth of their child.

Mary Ellen and Curt did live together after they were married. Curt even established a medical practice on Walton's Mountain. When WW 2 broke out Curt joined the Army Medical Corp and was sent to Richmond for training. Mary Ellen and John Curtis breifly followed him there and took a small apartment near the Army Base to be near him. But that didn't work out and they soon returned to Walton's Mountain. After his training Curt was posted to Honolulu by the Army. So Curt went to Hawaii and the plan was for Mary Ellen to become an Army nurse and join him there. However Curt was wounded while treating wounded during the attack on Pearl Harbour. He was later erroneously reported as deceased and Mary Ellen believing she was a widow chose to stay on Walton's Mountain. A couple of years later it was revealed that Curt's wounds had rendered him impotent and since that made him feel like less than a man and not capable of being a husband he had chosen to let Mary Ellen Believe he was dead.

That's kind of racy stuff for a family show like The Waltons. I do remember watching the episode where she met her next husband, Jonesy, on the Hallmark Channel. I think that was also Ralph Waite's final episode as a regular.

If I remember correctly , they had another actor play Curt when Mary Ellen found out he was alive.

Tom Bower originally played Curt. Scott Hylands played the "back from the dead" Curt, for one episode only - "The Tempest".

And Richard Gilliland played Mary Ellen's second husband, Arlington Westcott Jones. AKA Jonesy.

Apparently, a lot of other people felt the same way, if you read other Waltons message boards.

As you can see Robert Wigtman (bottom photo ) bears very little resemblance to Richard Thomas. (top)

You are very lucky. John Boy was injured in the war so I guess that explains why he acted so different.

Thanks so much for explaining this! I'm currently watching the show on Hallmark and Insp in hopes of trying to catch the ones I miss from the other station. Anyway, I watched the TV movie when Mary Ellen gets married to Jonesy just last week or when ever it was on and I was confused at this thing with Curt. As a kid I watched the show and recalled him dying at Pearl Harbor, but being so long ago there were a few things I forgot....like her second marriage. So when Mary Ellen was asking Corabeth about the adoption process, Corabeth being the snob she was made a snide comment about Mary Ellen being divorced and that she would never be able to adopt. Mary ellen then said that Curt abandoned her and that it wasn't her doing. That's where the confusion began. I had distinctly recalled Curt dying so I'm glad someone explained this because I guess I didn't go that deep into the series...or at least that is something I totally forgot. funny, I came here to ask about this and it was already here. Thanks again!
