I'm guessing he must be. Because in tonight's episode "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," he managed to catch the killer in the exact same way Columbo caught Dr. Flemming in the first Columbo pilot "Prescription: Murder," back in 1968.

...Patrick Jane loves to "showboat" his success at nailing the killer right in their face, as Lt. Columbo did. But we don't know if "Columbo" is a "real person" or just a "TV show" to Mr. Jane {never once have we heard him say, "Oh, yeah, I get my inspiration from that guy in the wrinkled raincoat on TV...it needs a dry cleaning."}. The big difference between them is that while Lt. Columbo has a happy home life with his wife- Jane doesn't, because of "Red John"....and he's a lonely man, to boot.

The funny part is that when I heard Lisbon tell Jane the accomplice has just killed himself, I knew what was coming and where I had seen it before.

Perhaps the writer(s) were stuck for an original ending and went back to a classic detective show for inspiration.
