Very late in making this thread, but I'm enjoying tonight's show. I think that Anne Hathaway and James Franco are doing a fine job hosting. I thought it was sad seeing Sandra Bullock. Just remembering last year. Nice to see Natalie Portman win. She looks beautiful.

I've never rooted for two people so strongly during award season before...and then for them to both win EVERYTHING! A great close to the season.

This rendition of, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", is simply beautiful. That song always makes me want to cry anyway, but wow, that was something else!

Congratulations Mike! I loved The Fighter, I'm thrilled that Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won. They deserved to win. I didn't see Black Swan, but I'm sure it was great. Natalie Portman is so beautiful and talented. Nice to see her preggers and happy. I just read her bio on imdb, and learned a lot about her.

They say that pregnant women have a certain glow and Natalie Portman was glowing in a very beautiful way tonight. I agree with you about that rendition on "Over the Rainbow"! It's one of the most beautiful movie songs ever and that rendition was gorgeous and awe inspiring!

My grandson was really glad that The King's Speech would win the Best Picture Academy Award because he and several other members of my family were opposed to the idea of an animated film winning Best Picture. The Best Picture Academy Award should be limited to live-action films only and animated films should be barred from Best Picture wins and nominations. Only two other animated films were nominated for BP. Why does an animated film have to win oor be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture?

Okay, here's where I get catty, lol. I don't think Annette Bening is aging that great. Anne Hathaway looks great, but if she had any more false eyelashes, she wouldn't be albe to open her eyes, lol. I just loved her gown though. That color, love it. I think that's called cobalt blue. What a great figure.

Thanks! The Fighter really was excellent. I was so glad that Annette Bening didn't upset in Lead Actress category. So many people on various movie forums kept going on and on about how she has been overdue and that they need to give it to her because she's "Hollywood royalty." Two of my all-time favorite actresses, Hilary Swank and Natalie Portman, have prevented Annette from winning the Oscar three times now!

Agreed! I think Helen Mirren, who is 13 years older, looks a lot better than Annette.

Betty Garrett died in 2011 so I expect she will be included in next years tribute. It's a shame however that Peter Graves and Cory Haim were excluded as they should have been part of this years tribute.

I am thrilled that Colin Firth and The King's Speech won major awards! The movie was absolutely amazing and I have always loved Colin Firth. I wanted him to win last year as well even though I still haven't seen the movie he was nomimated for. And how awesome was that story the director told about his mother giving him the idea about doing the "King's Speech" movie.

Everyone is saying that the Best Picture winner was too predictible, but I honestly didn't think it would win. It certainly deserved to, but I was extactic when I heard them read the name out.

Just curious... I can hardly remember last year so I was wondering why you were sad to see Sandra Bullock. I know she was having martial problems and so forth, but... enlighten me? I thought she was absolutely stunning and I hope that jackass Jessie James knows what he's lost. She deserves so much better than him.

Natalie Portman did look amazing, but I had no idea she was pregnant. Was that her boyfriend (or husband) that escorted her up on the stage?

There is no Academy Award or Golden Globe Award for Best Voice Actor/Voice Actress, which is why my grandson Jim thinks voice acting is stupid.

Brad
02-28-2011, 06:23 PM
Well, that's your grandson's opinion, and he's entitled to it. But I think it takes a special kind of actor to pull off a good performance in an animated film. Some of the names that immediately come to mind are Mel Blanc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Blanc), Eleanor Audley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Audley), Cliff Edwards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Edwards) and, yes, Tom Hanks and John Goodman (there's a good reason he's lent his voice to so many animated films).

Did anyone else find Franco a bit off putting as a host? He just kind of did his 'vacant smile' thing and never really projected much personality at all. I also don't think he seems to have any comic timing. Hathaway was OK, though it did seem at times as if she was trying too hard (perhaps to make up for Franco?). I dunno...just my thoughts.

All in all, a good show, though. Nice to see it was largely free of politics and snark. I didn't see any of the films nominated so I didn't have a dog in any fight. Loved Kirk Douglas, would have loved to have seen he and Ernest Borgnine onstage together. :)

I thought they did fine with the material that was written for them. Though, I think it was a bizarre choice to put the two of them together. I know they were trying to appeal to a younger demographic but it's beyond me how they came up with those two names to host.

I don't watch award shows, but your comment got me wondering how old Benning is... she's only 52.

And to think...Goldie Hawn is 65. And Raquel Welch is 70. Benning never looked that good on the best day of her life. <meow> :cat:

I did hear the "Over the Rainbow" rendition, it was very good. Even if the kids were lip synching, at least they hopefully lip synched to themselves. It takes a LOT of guts for anyone to do THAT song, but they did a good job with it.

What is it with Hollywood and Haim? What do they have against him? Didn't some other award show leave him out of a clip honoring people who passed away?

They can't take 3 seconds and insert a clip of him taking his driving test in "License to Drive"?

I wish The Academy Awards would've shown more film clips of the past and had a CGI Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck announce the Oscar for Best Animated Pic (Short or Film....)

James28
02-28-2011, 10:25 PM
No...they don't.

Yes, they do need to be banned from BP nominations and wins. Animated films will never win best picture, not in 2010, not in 2050, not even in 2100. And an actor cannot win the Best Actor/Actress Academy award by providing just the voice for his character, he needs to provide the body and soul for his character in the film.

A BILL should be passed to prohibit the nominations (or, more likely, wins) of Animated Films for the Best Picture Academy Award. Only live-action films can win the Best Picture Academy Award.

Besides, did you want Toy Story 3 to win Best Picture? Several members of my family are boycotting the film because of the nomination.

Your family is missing out on a wonderful film for a silly reason. The category isn't "Best Live Action Picture;" it's "Best Picture." And if an animated movie is as good as -- or better than -- the other nominated films, why not?

Only three animated films (Beauty and the Beast, Up and Toy Story 3) have been nominated for Best Picture, and in all three cases, they deserved the nod.

Oh, and for the record, I was rooting for Toy Story 3 to win.

catlover79
02-28-2011, 11:37 PM
Animated films should definitely be nominated!! Heck, the Toy Story movies are a million times more touching and relatable than 90% of most live action flicks out there. Had the Best Animated Film Category been around before 2001 (or was it 2002?), the previous 2 TS movies would definitely have won. So there.

There's no reason not to have full length animated films nominated for best picture. Over the last few years, animated films like "The Incredibles", "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo" were better than just about every live action film that came out.

I think I'd agree that voice actors for animated films should not be nominated for "Best Actor", but voice overs should really have their own category (if they don't already).

I know that animated films used to have their own category, but that was back when most of them were shorts. Now there are a couple of full length features that come out every year.
