John Noble & Christopher Lloyd, Mad Scientists of "Fringe"
by Alyse Wax
Jan. 20, 2010
After a two month hiatus, "Fringe" returns tomorrow night with all-new episodes. The Observers are back, and Walter befriends the keyboardist from his favorite 1970s band, Violet Sedan Chair.
Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, guest stars as the burned-out musician, who has "retired from life."
On the eve of "Fringe's" return, John Noble (Walter) and Lloyd spoke about working together, and Noble revealed what we can expect for the remainder of the season.
On The Observers:
John: "We will find out their role in our universe. They are outside the universe, and their interference caused a rupture between the universes. They are trying to fix it.
The main Observer has the last line in tomorrow's episode, so watch for it. It is very telling."
On returning to the other universe:
John: "We can't resist the alternate universe. We will go back a few times this season. We will also get more background on Walternate - we will see how he became who he is.
We will see humanization behind that steel exterior."
On Walter's character development:
John: "Walter is mending the rift between he and Peter. He has really come out of that fog he was in in the first episode. Walter thinks he is incapable of solving problems, but Nina is encouraging. She will help him accept his limitations, but also show him what he can accomplish.
It is fortunate we have Nina there. Can you imagine the world if Walter were running Massive Dynamic? We did just shoot a scene showing what kind of CEO Walter would be."
On teaming up two great on-screen mad scientists:
Christopher: "I am a fan of sci-fi. I love being taken into a strange world, especially if it is done with credibility and imagination."
John: "Christopher is one of my heroes. We had a terrific time together. Our scenes were just two crazy old men trying to communicate with each other. We just understood each other."
On his guest role:
Christopher: "It was such a pleasure. Everyone was very supportive, and made me feel included in a very special ensemble. My character has retreated from life.
When Walter finds me, I am in a retirement home. He is confused, but in awe of Walter. Our characters are from two different worlds, but they bond despite their differences."
On Christopher becoming a recurring character:
John: "Wouldn't that be wonderful?"
