Does she even serve a purpose? She doesn't get any of the funny lines, nor is she even featured prominently in storylines...

I don't think Meg is meant to be funny. She is meant to be full of teen angst. and her purpose is to get teenage girls to watch Family Guy. Whether she is successful in that purpose I don't know.

Meg gets neglected from her own parents and at one point, she gets back by being in jail and acting cruel.
But it seems that they might as well throw Meg in the garbage, I think Peter should throw Meg out of the house like what Uncle Phil does to Jazzy Jeff on "Fresh Prince".

It seems like every modern show has to have a "whipping boy"; one character that takes the brunt of the rest of the characters' cruelty. On FG, unfortunately, it's Meg. I like her personally and while I understand this isn't a realistic show by any stretch, they've really gone overboard with the "abuse Meg" stuff. It wasn't nearly as harsh in the first few years.
