I'm not sure on the names of anyone involved but there was a case I recalled watching where a family was driving along the highway and some crazy guy in a Camaro or similar began shooting at them and they all thought they survived and found their son had been shot. The son had covered his face with his teddy bear.
Does anyone know this case?
Yes. The victim's name was Robert James. The killer was later identified as Alvie Williams, who is now doing life in prison.

Is this the same guy?
In any case, people like these are absolute scum and deserve life.
EDIT: It seems more than one scumbag has the same name. Alvie Utah Williams looks to be the one who killed the little boy: http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-163564188.html

Court misconduct caused his conviction to be overturned. At least back in 2005. I don't know what's going on with his case now. One of their articles says he was originally convicted in 2002.
Here's part of one article:
Alvie Utah Williams was convicted in 2003 by a Victorville Superior Court jury for the Aug. 1, 1997, slaying of Robert Xavier James, who was strapped in a child seat in the back of his parents' car when he was struck in the head by a bullet.
Robert's father, Travis James, was driving his 1983 Chrysler Imperial west on Hesperia's Main Street about 8:45 p.m. His wife and 6-year-old daughter were also in the car. James tried passing a blue Chevy Camaro that Williams was riding in with several other people, authorities said.
The driver of the Camaro cut James off, and a passenger in the Camaro leaned out the window and fired several gunshots at James' car. James rammed the back …
