"My Life" - written by Billy Joel and performed by Bertie Higgins, for "Bosom Buddies"

It's unclear if "My Life" was written by Joel specifically for the Tom Hanks/Peter Scolari series and later became a hit or vice versa, but either way whenever I hear the song on the radio I always think of Hanks and Scolari in drag. "My Life" became a hit and reached number 3 on the 1978 Billboard charts. A bit of trivia: the "old friend" who "closed the shop, sold the house, and bought a ticket to the West coast" was none other than comedian Richard Lewis. Because of licensing issues, "My Life" cannot be heard on the DVD releases of the series.

Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.

CHORUS
I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time

They will tell you you can't sleep alone
In a strange place
Then they'll tell you you can't sleep
With somebody else
But sooner or later you sleep
In your own space
Either way it's okay
You wake up with yourself

It's a shame something as stupid as money kept them from using this song on the DVD's. My Life and Bosom Buddies belong together!

It's a song called "Shake Me Loose". It's the same theme song used for syndicated airings of Bosom Buddies.

Every time "My Life" comes on the radio at work, I mention that it's the theme song to "Bosom Buddies." I also mention that it's not on the DVD. But this song and "Love & Marriage" may be big songs on their own, to me they are #1 theme songs to their respective shows and therefore belong on the DVD.

You can't deface a painting. Why butcher TV shows on DVD by removing music? They are works of art and shouldn't be tampered with over money.

Exactly. Same goes for The Wonder Years and WKRP. Every time I hear "My Life", I also think of BB.

Yup - the WKRP theme song is there because it was written especially for the show.

such a great song for such a bad comic.

Talk about not doing research for an article! "My Life" was released in 1978, "Bosom Buddies" didn't premiere until 1980...

not only that but the lyrics themselves make it completely obvious that it has nothing to do with the premise of the show - two guys in New York living in an apartment building for women vs. a single guy moving away from his life to become a stand-up comic in LA.

Bosom Buddies needs to be re-released as a complete series set, with the original theme, "My Life" restored, and un-edited from the original broadcast run. This is another show that Paramount "dropped the ball" on!

Considering that it had only 37 episodes (2 short seasons), this would be a great show for Shout! Factory to release. The mere fact that Tom Hanks went on to be a superstar, shouldn't this series which seems to be a cult favorite and has been honored by The TV Land Awards get better treatment?

I've always wanted to buy this series, but when I heard it was butchered so, and doesen't even have the original theme, (by the way "My Life" is one of my favorite songs of all time) I really don't want to bother.

they cut out a lot of great scenes just because they had music in them too - like parts where Ruth was singing, and when the guys were in jail and sang that doo-wop bit

its like they never even tried to get the rights to ANY of the music in the show.
