[Stuck In The '70's]

I used to watch All's Fair every week. I thought it was a pretty good show. I remember watching To Rome With Love but I was kind of young when it was on. I saw a couple of episodes of It Takes Two. I never cared much for it though.

I do remember Richard Crenna's very first TV show "Our Miss Brooks" He played Walter Denton one of Miss Brooks students. This show actually started out on radio before moving to TV in the early 50's.

I recall watching "All's Fair" and "It Takes Two" fairly regularly. What I seem to remember most (besides Crenna being in both shows) is that I was very surprised when both series were cancelled. At the time, I somehow thought they were both doing pretty well, and would go the distance, destined to last for several seasons. Information about ratings wasn't so common then, but you often got a sense of which shows were bombing and which were doing pretty well. That sense faltered noticeably for me in the case of these two shows. I'd love to see some episodes of "Slattery's People."

I remember when Richard Crenna did those shows, although I really do not remember actually watching Slatery's People. I suspect that neither of the local stations that we had aired the show.

Also, I remember him as a recurring guest on Judging Amy, a favorite show of mine.

I well remember Walter Brennan's other shows (The Tycoon, The Guns of Will Sonnett, and To Rome with Love). On the last one, he either replaced or was replaced a character played by Kay Medford (an Oscar nominee as Fanny's mother in Funny Girl).

I know that Walter Brennan recorded a number of selections.

I never cared for James Garner, so I did not watch the other thing that you mentioned. I have seen some of his later shows (in which he played a municipal mayor and later a Supreme Court Judge).

I remember hearing "Old Rivers" on the radio. I also remember thinking how enjoyable it was to hear a "narrative" type song from Walter Brennan when so many TV stars of the day who really couldn't sing were trying to with varying degrees of success.

I read many years ago that "Old Rivers" was actually supposed to be the "B' side of that 45 rpm record Walter Brennan recorded. The planned "A" side was to have been "The Epic Ride of John H. Glenn" following his successful three orbits of the Earth in February. 1962. Apparently when the record started getting airplay, DJ's favored the side with "Old Rivers" and it took off.

I remember ALL'S FAIR; it was one of Norman Lears shows and was a comedy set in Washington D.C. I think he played a congressman or a senator. I don't remember those other shows of his, though.

And I remember Walter Brennan in TO ROME WITH LOVE; he played the grandfather. The series was about an american played by John Forsythe as a widower who moved to Rome with his 3 daughters. It was from Don Fedderson productions and they did a couple cross-over episode with his other 2 shows FAMILY AFFAIR and MY 3 SONS.



And I think I heard OLD RIVERS on the radio once.
