Judge orders Ohio man to pay $44,845 for stealing trees from national forest

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A federal judge has ordered an Ohio timber cutter to pay $44,845 for illegally taking down 822 trees in a national forest.

Larry Adkins Jr. of Oak Hill, Ohio, also was given six months of home confinement with electronic monitoring, and U.S. District Court Judge Edmund Sargus Jr. of Columbus ordered Adkins to perform 200 hours of community service.

Adkins had pleaded guilty to stealing the trees from the Wayne National Forest in Gallia County.

The theft was discovered in late 2006. The U.S. Forest Service spent about $10,000 repairing damage.

Authorities say the stolen trees were sold to three mills as saw timber and pulpwood.

Not only is he getting off cheap with the trees, I'm surprised he avoided jail time - this IS a NATIONAL forest we're talking about. :confused:
