SHOWTUNES!! And don't laugh, it's the best music there is! It's so fun! And if you can't find the soundtrack for the show with the songs you want, you can always buy the movie version (if there is one) and get almost the same thing! So it's convenient, too!

Everyone always laughs when they ask what type of music I like and I say showtunes. Especially when they learn that it's pretty much all I like. My entire CD collection (which, granted, isn't large at all) is made up of showtunes, and the Beatles. Plus a couple of soundtracks to movies that have a bunch of 50s-60s-70s songs in them.

AHHHHHH NOT THE SAME!!!! Not even ALMOST the same...no no no no no! :livid: ok...better. Nah you gotta get the theatre soundtracks, the movies don't do them justice 9 times out of 10...and Virgin megastores, Tower, HMV, etc etc etc have them too...or you can get a burned copy from a friend. :D

Me personally, I am eclectic...I listen to and love it all...from Classical to Alternative to Showtunes to 80s to the Golden Age of music back when songs like "The Way You Look Tonight" were first recorded...I have listened to and like SOME country (not all...i dont like TWANG music, sorry) SOME rap (until it gets on my nerves) SOME metal (when it's unavoidable) and I still like Christian Alternative music as well.

I was a child of the 80s and some songs will hold a special place in my heart and memory there forever...not too big on the 70's or 60's but I listen to them too. Send me back to the 20's, 30's and 40's though...WOO HOO! Love the Big Bands...and glad people were trying to bring them back too...it was a good try.

Opera is in there too...though people don't seem to like listening to it with me...but oh well. La Bohème will always be my favorite *melts* because it's so gorgeous! So yeah, classical, opera...all that...I empathize.

**Moo the musical moo**

PS-lookit, it's my 400th POST!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!

My favorite broad category of music is good old head poundin' finger bleedin' balls to the walls rock n roll. Narrowing that down, I generally prefer late 60's psychedelic-type rock and 70s rock.

But like many of you, I appreciate all kinds of music, and that includes many types lots o people hate, such as rap and classical and country and folk.

I like a lot of types of music. My favorites are R&B and Rap with singing. Latley, I've been watching the rock channele and it's not all that bad.In a way it reminded me of Rap but with a lot more base and louder.

Rock is such a broad genre. There's so many sub catorgories that I like more than others.
Let's see, I like particular bands more than whole genres. Like, I hate metal and nu-metal, but I have a liking of Linkin Park(they're rather sensitive than others...), yet, my favorite band ever is Oasis, which is an example of great modern rock 'n' roll.
I like The Police and their reggae flavor, while I love 80's music on whole(my favorite song of all time is "Take On Me" by a-ha. Go figure). I like my share of oldies, and rock's greats like The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc.
Then I like cheesy stuff like Journey and Foreigner( Ah, sue me!).
I don't know, I'm a kid who cares about music way too much.
Asking a question like favorite type of music can get me yapping for hours...

I agree with Cokies - I like cheesy 80's rock ballads too! :D And my favorite non-rock band are The Bangles. I've loved them to death ever since I was about 5 years old. Did anyone see that 'Behind The Music' on them? I found that really interesting.

Although I'm open to almost any kind of music from time to time, my favorite is, by far, the British groups, the so-called "British Invasion" of the 1960's. The reason is that is when I was in jr. high and high school, and it was right for that time. I can also see why people growing up today might not like it. I understand that. They have their own music. My theory is that each type of music was "right" for its time.

But I'm still a big fan of this British Invasion music to this day. In fact, a large percentage of my iPod is of that type.

On a website for one of those groups, the Zombies I think, there was a cool quote from Shakespeare's Tempest, that, although written during the Elizabethan times, captures the essence of this music.

"Be not afraid. The isle is full of noises, sound and sweet airs that
give delight and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twanging instruments
will hum about mine ears, and sometimes voices."
--William Shakespeare, from Act I, Scene I
on a Ship at Sea, from the Tempest

You'd be surprised how many young people also like The Beatles (and other
'60s bands). A former co-worker of mine (who was 1/3 my age) was a
Beatles fan. Good music is always good music, and--if you haven't heard it
before--it's a new song to you.

Thank you for sharing that. It's good to know that, and it's true--good music is good music, no matter what. As an early baby boomer, I remember how much 1) My parents' generation despised rock and roll (at least many said they did, and 2) How much we (supposedly) detested their music, or were distant from it (e.g., Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, et al). I actually though it was ok myself. I think it was probably more generational defensiveness than anything els, plus none of us kids would ever admit in public that we liked it, even if we did. For instance, when groups like the Beatles and the Animals would be on Ed Sullivan, our parents would watch with us and were sometimes complimentary. My Mom's comments about the Beatles and the Animals went something like, "Yeah, they have 'long' hair, but they're clean cut and act like gentlemen." I guess it was a way of at least showing some sort of approval.

And how my parents' generation would tolerate our 'garage bands', carting around our drums, guitars and amps to practice at one another's houses, their only complaint "Couldn't you turn down the amps a bit; we can't hear the words of the songs." or "Do you have to shout into that thing? (the mike)" In my band, we were all good students and didn't do drugs, so my parents were ok with tolerating the music.

I know I've digressed from the thread somewhat. Even as a teacher, I seldom talk about music with my students. I don't want to sound (to them) like "My music is better than yours" type of thing. I'm sure their own music is more meaningful to them. Nevertheless, it's good to know that many kids of today like at least some of the 60's music.
Thanks for responding.
