I would have to say my fav theme song would be from "FRIENDS"

Hmmm....the animated series "The Beatles" used "Can't Buy Me Love" as its theme song, but perhaps that's cheating. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
This was a mega-hit long before the series appeared. And it wasn't written just for the series. This is lucky for the competition. Had The Beatles written a theme song just for the series they would be the clear winners.

Among sitcoms, I gotta go with The Beverly Hillbillies. When this show came on in 1962, no one had ever heard a finger-picked five-string banjo before. The theme song got radio play. It was released as a single and charted.

But my favorite theme song is:
***drum roll****

Secret Agent by Johnny Rivers!

There's a man who leads a life of danger
To everyone he meets, he stays a stranger
With every move he makes, another chance he takes
Odds are he won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name

Beware of pretty faces that you find
A pretty face can hide an evil mind
Ah, be careful what you say, you'll give yourself away
Odds are you won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name
(totally cool Johnny Rivers guitar solo)

Swinging on the Riviera one day
And then laying in the Bombay on the next day
Ah, if you let the wrong word slip, while kissing persuasive lips
The odds are you won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name
Secret Agent Man....

Although I love Laverne & Shirley more than anything on earth, it didn't exactly have the best theme song. I liked the theme songs from Gilligan's Island, Happy Days (Every single version, including Rock Around the Clock), Mary Tyler Moore, All in the Family, WKRP in Cincinnati, Facts of Life, and I like the tune to Hawaii Five-O, but I've never even seen the show... (By the way, these songs aren't in the order I like them)

------------------
"Well, Laverne is sort of childish"

"Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!"

"Well at least I don't sew L's on everything I wear!"

"Well that would be pretty stupid considering your name's Shirley!"

How about 'The Rockford Files'? Or 'Battlestar Galactica' (Stu Phillips and the Los Angeles Philaharmonic Orchestra)? As for newer shows - that Drew Carrey theme seems pretty cool. Ooh, I forgot, 'Hill Street Blues'. Now that one's and AWESOME theme-song. And then you got 'Cheers'. Man! The list just goes on-and-on! Okay, now I'll stop (lol).

Oops, sorry, T, I meant to say that I don't like the song so much as the way they sing it. It's hilarious...

At least three of my favorite TV theme songs are from animated shows. In no particular order;

1)The Theme from ALF(Not the sitcom, but the two cartoon spin-offs).
2)"You're Standing on My Neck"(Theme from "Daria"), by Splendora.
3)"Turn Down the Sun"(Theme from "Daria: Is It Fall Yet?"), also by Splendora.

And one of my favorite movie themes is "Opening Day"(Theme from "Up the Down Staircase"), by Fred Karlin.

I wonder how the new shows tv themes will go.

Well, to paraphrase one of our classic statesmen, my previous answer is no longer operative.

Last night I was watching the Addams Family and I realized how much I loved that theme song. I actually programmed by setup to replay just the theme song and watched it for 10 minutes or so. It is a classic. And, for now anyway, it is my favorite among sitcoms.

Also, when you asked about "song", I though that meant there had to be some lyrics. If all music is fair game, "The Prisoner" wins overall.

I hope you read this post quickly though, I can be rather fickle about favorites...

60s: The Addams Family, I Dream of Jeannie, Gilligan's Island

70s: The Partridge Family, Welcome Back Kotter, Good Times

80s: Facts of Life, Family Ties, Cheers

90s: Married With Children, Drew Carey, Malcolm in the Middle

But my all-time favorite theme song is actually a cartoon! I grew up in the 80s, and the 80s version of Alvin and the Chipmunks was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon. I used to always get in trouble for turning up the volume to the theme song (so I could dance to it!) while my parents were still sleeping. "Alvin, Simon, Theodore!" http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wink.gif

my favourite theme song would have to be
CHARLES IN CHARGE (both versions):

New boy in the neighbourhood
Leaves downstairs and it's understood.
He's there just to take good care of me,
Like he's one of the family

Charles In Charge of our days and our nights
Charles In Charge of our wrongs and our rights

And I sing, I want, I want Charles In Charge
of me.

Charles In Charge of our days and our nights
Charles In Charge of our wrongs and our rights

And I sing, I want, I want Charles In Charge of me.

Well, I'm just changin' everything lately. My list is different now. I love theme songs, so in no particular order: Laverne & Shirley, The Facts of Life (all 3 versions), Happy Days (every version, including Rock Around the Clock), Gilligan's Island, Diff'rent Strokes (never seen it, but it has a great theme song!), Green Acres, All in the Family, The Monkees, Bette, I could go on an on... oh! It's a cartoon, but the Pink Panther! And Ducktales! In sixth grade we played it in band. That was fun.. we played the Beach Boys' Barbara Ann, too. And last year we played the Mission: Impossible theme... and this year we played Twist and Shout... but I'll shut up now...

------------------
"Well, Laverne is sort of childish" -Shirley

"Childish? Childish? Coming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!" -Laverne

My favorite theme song was from the short lived TV show The Last American Hero starring William Katt as the Hero who couldn't seem to fly. My other favorite theme songs are from the following shows:

The Fall Guy, The Incredible Hulk, The Hogan Family, 7th Heaven, Buck Rogers (show starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray) and of course Silver Spoons

I didn't read all the posts (two pages?!?!), but here are my choices, broken in to categories:

Most Effective: Songs that set up the premise for the show. Gilligan's Island, Mr. Ed, and The Brady Bunch all fall in to this category. But the winner is The Beverly Hillbillys, simply becuase the title of the show is inexplicably thrown in to the song, right in the middle of it, by a "Mr. Announcer" voice that completely breaks the mood of the song. Think about it... there's that southern-drawl voice, singing "Well next thing ya know ol' Jed's a millionaire..." and the story of the show is told. Then the banjo music stops, and Mr. Announcer comes on and says "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES!", and the banjo music starts up again, only faster now! This theme always makes me giggle, even though I hate the show.

CATCHIEST TUNE: The music had really nothing to do with the show, but will now and forever be associated with that show. Nominies include Mary Tyler Moore, Laverne & Shirley, and Who's the Boss. But the winner for this one is Perfect Strangers.

BEST INSTRUMENTAL: Self explanatory; no lyrics. Nominees include Alf and Taxi. And the winner is... Head of the Class! A combination of classical-sounding music and electric guitars expertly display the clash of intelectualism versus real lif that the show so desperately tried to excentuate!

And our final category of the evening...

BEST ROCK-AND-ROLL SWIPE: Sitcoms that use actual, established musical hits as their theme song (usually you don't get to hear these themes in syndication). Nominees are Get A Life (REM's "Stand") and Bossom Buddies (Billy Joel's "My Life"). And the winner is... Working (Devo's "Workin' in a Coal Mine")!

You take the good you take the bad, you take them both and there you have . . . THE FACTS OF LIFE

FOL's theme is obviously my favorite (I love 'em all), but I also like the one from Gilligan's Island, The Drew Carry Show (all of 'em are great), Laverne and Shirley, and The Simpsons.
