It's been 65 years since the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Thousands of soldiers on both sides lost their lives, and the effort to raise an American flag captured the world's attention.
The battle: The 36-day siege was part of an operation to take over Iwo Jima.
The significance: The capture of the island's airfields was important because of their proximity to mainland Japan.
The flag: The photo captured the raising of the second flag on the fifth day of the battle on top of Mount Suribachi.
The flag raisers: Only three of the six soldiers made it out of the battle alive.
The photographer: Joe Rosenthal worked for the Associated Press during the war.
