I love Roseanne, and she definitely got much better as the seaosns went on (she was pretty bad in season one), but Laurie Metcalfe was definitely the best. The amount of emotion she could diplay in one scene- sexy, vunerable, tough, run down, tired, energetic, was amazing.
Though in the last two seasons, she went too far over the top and kept bugging her eyes out during every scene. IMHO, that's when Roseanne as an actress overtook her in talent.

My personal favourite was Laurie Metcalfe, who played Jackie. Extremely talented lady especially in JFK. Have to agree with the comment that the last 2 series were a letdown for Jackie's character. Didn't enjoy the Fred storylines or Laurie's OTT portrayal of Jackie as a pathetic loser. Much preferred earlier series where Laurie's talents were better employed. Roseanne herself is a close second.

Sara Gilbert was my fave followed by Laurie Metcalf. Shelley Winters was pretty funny too.

Awww man I loved Shelley Winters as Nana Mary!! Whenever she'd come over to the house, the audience would cheer and holler when she came through the door. She had good chemistry with everyone, and a lot of common sense. And she never let Beverly push her around.

Sara Gilbert by far during the entire run of the show.
Roseanne was horrible the first few seasons but really shined season 5-8.
John Goodman the entire run.
Laurie Metcalf season 1-7
And the guy who played David (Johnny Galaki?) was great his entire run!
The rest were horrible.......

I think the worst on the show has to go to Estelle Parsons, who had fallen so far from grace since her 60's Oscar win. As the series progressed, her acting skills seemed to degenerate, and by season 9 she was pretty much unwatchable.
IMHO, Shelly Winters is number two. I think the audience liked her because she was Shelly Winters, and becasue her character was so eccentric. But as for acting, she kept going down the same tube as Estelle.
Remember the season nine episode in which Bev and Nana Mary have their "talk" about who Bev's father is? Truly one of Roseanne's most cringe-worthy episodes.

John Goodman ALL THE WAY!
Besides Laurie Metcalf, nobody else can really act on that show. Roseanne is decent at comedy I guess; but, no disrespect to her, she's just plain terrible in dramatic moments. I literally want to fall asleep then. I mean, you can barely hear her!
The oldest daughter is alright, but the younger one isn't good. Even worse is her boyfriend.
As for DJ, one would think he'd develop som,e acting skills as he got older. Not so.

Roseanne and Laurie. In some episodes I think Laurie shows more talent than Roseanne, but they are both great.

Laurie Metcalf is one talented lady. I have to agree with the other posters who said that her performances in the last couple of seasons were too over the top; I'm guessing she did this in reaction to the poor scripts and was trying to do anything to get a laugh from her lines. The same probably applies to Estelle Parsons. Roseanne herself definitely improved over the years, but as far as pure acting goes, she can't hold a candle to Metcalf, Parsons, and John Goodman. She was basically playing herself on the show.

Sara Gilbert was great - she was 14 when the show started and Darlene was 11. She was great all nine seasons.
Johnny Galecki's face always looked like you would expect David's face to do when Darlene dumped him or made a joke about him. He was great his entire run.
Roseanne was a great actor from seasons 3-9.

Laurie Metcalf first, then Roseanne, then John. But all 3 were top notch - or at least Roseanne was by a few series. As has already been noted, in the really early episodes it was just her stand-up schtick and all the action would cease while she went on. But by the end she was a damn good comedic actress. I thought Sara Gilbert was limited - she could do the eye rolling perfectly, etc. but was less convincing with the more dramatic moments that her character had towards the end. I think my favorite moments of the show always include Jackie - like the time they're talking about Nancy being a lesbian and how it's impossible to tell, Roseanne says 'yeah...lesbians are big old truckers that always wear old jeans and flannel shirts' and then Jackie gives this great laugh into horror that Roseanne is talking about her.
I will say that the writing required her to be a little too wacky (they actually parodied this in the 50s episode) in the last few seasons, it sounds silly but it was when her hair was a lot shorter. I really liked Sandra Bernhard too, thought she was hilarious.

I think John Goodman was the most consistant in his acting on the series- he was great for the entire run.
Laurie was good from seasons 1 through 7 or 8, then her character went way over the top and she just seemed bored.
Roseanne got better and better with every season. Look at the first season. She was truly horrible. Look at the 9th. She was excellent.
As for Sara, I don't know. She seemed to have only one acting style- the deadpan. It was amusing at first, but it's good that she became semi-regular when she dead. Had she appeard on every episode in seasons 6-9, she probably would have been pretty annoying.
And Estelle/Shelly Winters? How the mighty fell. Thought they were horrible, especially Estelle. Some of her acting was so bad it was painful.

My favourite is definately lecy goranson, her wit compliments darlene's and roseanne's sarcasm perfeclty and she is by far the most talented actress on the show, the other are funny but dont have much variation.

Except John Goodman. He can be very funny when he has to be; and very dramatic when the scene calls for it.
Sorry; I'm just a big John Goodman fan, and honestly believe he is one of the most under-rated talents on television. He is a great actor; an awesome singer; yet doesn't get recognized for it as much as he deserves.

I think every member of the cast held their own and delivered great performances. Never once while watching the show, do I think that so and so can't act.
I didn't see Roseanne's first season so I can't speak to that, but I do know that my favorite scenes are the ones that she's in. She kills me.
John Goodman is a terrific actor as is Laurie Metcalf. Roseanne makes me laugh the most, and I think she handles the dramatic scenes very well too.

Wow, I didn't know she was 14 at the beginning!!! She looked SO tiny!!! Especially in the pilot episode. I guess she was 13 for that??
But I completely agree, Sara Gilbert and Johnny Galecki were great...as were Roseanne (especially in moments when we really got see her act, not just say a joke), Laurie Metcalf, and John Goodman. Actually, most people on the show were really good at their characters, although some weren't as good as the others.

I liked Rosanne and Sarah Gillbert, most of the family was believable in their own individual porteyals for the most part, but they were my favorites throughout the series.
