After Modern Family's exhaustive search for an insult comic to entertain Jay (Ed O’Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) on their Valentine’s Day date (airing Feb. 10), the ABC sitcom has pulled game show staple and perennial Johnny Carson guest David Brenner out of obscurity. The storyline finds Jay trying to sell his less than enthusiastic young wife on a performance of his all-time favorite stand-up. Since Ed’s 63, it was no easy task finding a comedian his character grew up admiring. Let’s face it – most all the greats (Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Bob Hope) are dead. Still kicking at 78, David’s been getting laughs for decades on such shows as Hollywood Squares, The New Hollywood Squares, and most recently, the all-new Hollywood Squares. He’s just got one thing to look out for: Gloria, who’d much rather be spending her V-Day salsa dancing than faking laughs in front of this old time yuckster. Meanwhile, the gay hubbies are left babysitting Manny, while Phil and Claire check in to a hotel for some frisky business.
