View Full Version : My Mom is dying

My Mom is in a care home and this morning the nurses were unable to wake her up. They suspect she suffered a stroke during the night and she is in a coma. Her condition is such that to put it in plain words it would be a waste of time and resources to attempt to revive or treat her. So it is only a matter of time now. I would appreciate your prayers for my Dad, my siblings, and myself at this most difficult time. Thanks.

I'm very sorry about your mother, but I did have one question: Why did you use a Cool smilie icon  to preface this thread?

I'm sure it was a mistake.

I think Marv has that smiley set for every post he makes. He probably didn't even realize he had used it.

Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear this Marv. My prayers are with you and your family. :(

Lauren is right. It's an automatic reflex for me to use that smiley and I didn't even realize I'd used it for this thread. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers. I and several other family members spent most of the afternoon and all of the evening at Mom's bedside. I was even able to have the privilege of holding her hand for a while. She's stable right now and seems to be resting fairly comfortably and suffering little. We will see what the night and the morning bring. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

I'll also lift you up in prayer, at least your mom's not suffering. Though she may be in a coma she can hear you.

I think the smiley face is nice. I am very sorry to hear that you are going through this. I'll be thinking about you. I hope God is "listening" to our thoughts.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Losing a parent is so difficult. My dad died Dec 11, it will be a year this coming Friday.

I had him cremated, and his ashes are in a marble urn in my living room, surrounded by personal things of his (his glasses, a hanky, a dried up blue carnation from his Memorial, some Irish things, his Hole In One trophy with the ball..) Its not quite a year but it gives me great comfort to sit by him and talk to him still, having his remains with me is very comforting.

PS I am a nurse...please continue to talk to her even if she is unconscious, or in a coma. Don't allow medical staff to discuss things in her presence, like how badly she is doing or how long she has left, make her surroundings as plesant as possible. recall childhood memories (good ones) to her...I was in a coma for 4 months and some things do 'come through'. I remember many things my family said to me as I was in my coma.

As a nurse, you always strive for a 'pleasant passing' for every patient, when possible. Play some music for her from a small radio, things like that.

Marv,

I'm so very sorry to hear about your mother. Losing a parent is an overwhelming, world altering and terribly painful experience; it's something I understand all too well.

Please know that your family is in my heart and prayers at this very difficult time. I'm sure you are a great comfort to your mom and your entire family. Godspeed and take care.

Michael

Thank-you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Mom showed slight improvement on Sunday. She opened her eyes a couple of times but wasn't at all alert. This morning when we walked into her room her eyes were open and she was responsive. The nurse was feeding her some carnation instant breakfast. The first nutrition of any kind she had since Friday. So she is now conscious but spends the majority of the time sleeping and is very weak.
