This was actually a TV special shown on April 21, 1990. It was shown on all of the Big 3 (ABC, CBS, & NBC) stations, and cable channels BET, Nickelodeon, & USA at the same time. A VHS release of this special soon followed. Personally, I remember renting this so many times at my local Blockbuster Video around 1995 or so. I loved that special so much, which taught a good lesson about drug abuse, and had several "guest appearances" by many animated stars from Saturday morning shows at that time.

Garfield: Hey, going through life with a blue lampshade is work enough. Wake me when the lasagna comes.
(ALF unplugs the lamp, giving Garfield an electric shock)
ALF: Let me rephrase that. Do you want to help, or do you want to be lunch?
(A military-type music cue plays while Garfield straightens up)
Garfield: My luck to be stuck on a dresser with a pushy alien.

It took me until a few years ago to get that joke, because ALF eats cats.
