View Full Version : what comic strips do you think would work in cartoon form?
I was told that Bil Keane's popular comic strip The Family Circus ( the one inside a circle ) actually made it to televsion a few times in the past in cartoon form.
When? Was it any good?
I always believed that The Family Circus would have made a great family cartoon.
A cartoon verson of Blondie could work as well. Maybe its because of the movies from the 40s and the two Blondie shows ( neither lasted very long) but I am still kina surprised there never was a cartoon "Blondie".
any others???

Lumpy: Did you go out for anything, Dud?
Dudley: Well, I went out for football, but I got my finger stepped on, so my mother made me quit.
Eddie: Well listen-- I went out for basketball and I got my hair pulled, and my mother made ME quit.
Dudley: It's not that I was afraid of getting hurt or anything; it's just that-- well, it's kind o' hard to play the flute with a busted finger.

Don't know who else gets to read this but I think Mutts or Get Fuzzy or Rose is Rose would be great cartoons!
Calvin and Hobbes would be cute too.
And yeah, Family Circus has a couple specials out there, just look for the video. I remember the Valentine's Day and Christmas ones real well, and I wish there were more.

Wasn't Blondie a cartoon special at one time? I remember seeing it on CBS when I was younger. That would have made a good series, and also "For Better or For Worse", or "Hi and Lois".
I remember "Marvin" was a cartoon special at one time as well, but that was so long ago. But that would have been a good series too.

"Marvin: Baby of the Year," starring Dana Hill as the voice of Marvin. And I believe "For Better or Worse did have a TV special once.

Ziggy had a special or two. There was talk about Marmaduke becoming a regular series on CBS.

You know, some of the comic strips mentioned here have been animated at one time or another;
"Marmaduke" was a regular series on ABC back during the early 1980's, as part of the "Heathcliff" series (the one produced by Ruby-Spears, not the "Hector/Wordsworth/Mongo" version produced by DIC a few years later...);
Belive it or not, tv actually did a live action version of "Cathy"...only it was called "Caroline in the City" (anyone watching that show could see the similarities...tv does this sort of plagerism all the time...)
Comic strips that I would like to see animated...Berke Brethed's "Bloom County" and "Outland" would be interesting choices...Ray Billingsley's "Curtis" would be another good selection..."9 Chickweed Lane" would be an excellent production, if only to see how the animators would handle Brooke McEldowny's drawing style...
I'd also like to see them do some of the old classics...can't you just see "Li'l Abner" on Fox? Or "Bringing Up Father" (aka "Maggie and Jiggs"...ask your grandparents!)? And a "Beetle Bailey" toon in prime time would be pretty cool, too...and I think it's high time they made a hnew version of "Popeye the Sailor", adapting the old "thimble Theatre" strips from the early 1930's when our one-eyed sailor was something of a hell-raiser...THIS I can see on tv!!

There WAS an animated Blondie series , it didnt last long....I think Calvin and Hobbes would be the best choice, Calvin's unlimited imagination would be perfect fodder for tons of fun stories...but only if it were done RIGHT

Many of the strips on this message board have been animated at one time or
another. There were TV specials devoted to FAMILY CIRCUS, BLONDIE, MARVIN, ZIGGY, FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE, and CATHY; there were series
starring MARMADUKE and BOONDOCKS.

The Donald Duck- and Uncle Scrooge-comics by Carl Barks. Some of them were adapted to animation in Duck Tales, but they were altered so much, you could hardly see Barks' original story. They could redo those and adapt all other stories. Also, the Donald- and Scrooge-comics by Keno Don Rosa would make great animation-series.

I would love to see THE LOCKHORNS and THE BORN LOSER, too. There was a
BEETLE BAILEY cartoon series in the 1960s (starring Howard ("Ernest T. Bass") Morris as Beetle. Hi and Lois made one brief appearance in the made-for-TV movie "Popeye Meets the Man Who Hated Laughter" on the 1970s Saturday morning anthology series THE ABC SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE. Virtually every King Features character was in that show (even the action characters like Flash Gordon, Mandrake, and The Phantom).

Hagar the Horrible
Hanna-Barbera did produce a HAGAR THE HORRIBLE TV special, in 1989, titled
"Hagar Knows Best." Peter Cullen (who did the voice of K.A.R.R. on KNIGHT
RIDER) was Hagar, and Jeff Doucette (of NEWHART) was Lucky Eddie. Lydia
Cornell was Hagar's daughter Honi, and Donny Most (of HAPPY DAYS) was her
boyfriend, Lute.

Yes, there was an Opus & Bill (of BLOOM COUNTY and OUTLAND) Christmas
cartoon some years back, titled "A Wish for Wings That Work." It was quite
good. Columbia produced a series of LI'L ABNER cartoon shorts back in the
1940s (which Al Capp hated), but they resembled Tex Avery's style more than
Capp's biting satire.

Actually, there were only two BLONDIE cartoon specials aired: "BLONDIE &
DAGWOOD" (CBS, May 15, 1987) and "BLONDIE & DAGWOOD: SECOND WEDDING
WORKOUT" (CBS, Nov. 1, 1989). Both featured the voices of Loni Anderson
(Blondie) and Frank Welker (Dagwood). But it would make an interesting series.
So would CALVIN & HOBBES, if creator Bill Watterson could be persuaded to come out of retirement and be involved in it. Or even just a TV special would
be cool.

Greg Evans' "LuAnn" would also be excellent as a cartoon series.
