View Full Version : The Empire State Building is Lit Up to Celebrate China's 60 Years of Communism!?!

On Wednesday evening, the top of the Empire State Building will temporarily glow bright red – a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Communist Revolution in China.
Predictably, the decision by Empire State Building officials has more than a few in a snit. The folks over at the Fox News website are running an item on a “protest” of the light show – though the protest in the article seems to have been mostly nudged along by the folks at Fox News – and Twitter is alive with worried tweets.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that a country (USA) that has fought wars to stop the spread of communism is now celebrating communism?:eek::confused::rolleyes:
OH Nuts!

I'm personally not a fan of communism, but what's the problem with having the Empire State Building lit up for this event?

The management of the Empire State Building has control over when and for what they use the building to celebrate something.
I guess the Chinese must have a lot of pull in there. We also do a lot of trade with them so there are a lot of big bucks involved between the US and China.

I was going to say the same thing. And I'd like to know how the families of those who were killed fighting against communism feel having that "tribute" now.
I'd love to know what bonehead came up with that idea?!

There were big protests yesterday by Tibetians who have been killed under Chinese Rule.

Because Communism is the opposite of what this nation is all about.

Not surprising, considering the new "leadership" we have in this country these days. ohno: I bet our Fearless Leader had something to do with the decision.

Exactly! And when have you ever seen the Chinese celebrate or honour democracy in the last hundred years? And my bet is that you won't.
And don't get me started on trade with China. We're a bunch of saps - still willing to trade with them because of cheap goods, when more and more we're finding those goods are downright dangerous to us. I swear it's only because there's billions of them that they don't wipe themselves out with poisonous and inferior products they produce.

Sorry. I forgot that Obama is the greatest president we ever had.
He should be on currency. And on Mount Rushmore.
Happy 60th anniversary, Communist China! Six decades of crackdowns, executions, censorship, forced sterilizations, "re-education" programs, all the things which make a country great.

See, that's the thing with people who hate Obama. It's black or white with you guys. If you don't hate the guy, you must think he's the King of the world. I see comments like yours time and time again. Give me a break.
I'm actually referring to how as of late I only ever see you engaging in discussion on these boards when the conversation gives you an opportunity to bash him. You seem to be going out of your way to post countless threads pointing out how horrible he is. It's just...a bit obsessive in my opinion lol.
You know who decided to light up the Empire State Building in red and yellow? The idiots who manage it.
Now excuse me as I go drink my tea and munch on some Obama Can Do No Wrong Biscuits® Afterwards, I'll be sure to head on over to my Obama shrine and light a candle for you. If I'm not back later, it's because I'm at the White House shining Obama's shoes and plotting the demise of all non-communist countries with him whilst simultaneously making phone cawls to architects to carve his head into Mt. Rushmore. It's gonna be a blast! Toodles.

The Empire State Building is privately owned, the President nor any other government official had anything to do with it, that should be made clear. As for an explanation, Remember that China owns a big percentage of our debt and they have a big stake in trade. Money comes in ahead of everything, big business could care less about what happens in China.

OK, here's the real deal: the owners of the Empire State building are secretly Red Sox fans and wanted to honor them. It had nothing to do with Communist China.

Maybe they were trying to celebrate China because of the 'melting pot' this country has become. There are probably millions of Chinese people living in NYC. But I'm not trying to defend them. Just speculating. I think they try to celebrate every holiday they can by turning on different colored lights. If I'm not mistaken, they did the same thing for St. Patrick's Day one year. They probably didn't realize what chaos it would cause, though.

I like that analogy! Oh man, if word of that ever got out, there would be an all out war in NYC!!! :rotflmao: I wouldn't be admitting to liking the Sox either, so China is a good excuse!

Okay, my posts about Obama seem "excessive", as if I'm "obsessed". I know sometimes when a person has an epiphany of sorts, say, re-discovering one's conservative background and interest in political topics, they get attached to something which is easy to criticize and go on about that for a while. I wasn't just finding another excuse to go "Obama-bashing", I found it a strange coincidence that a major American landmark would choose to honor a a dubious event that has bedeviled the nation and the world for decades and represents everything that America has opposed--the 60th anniversary of communist tyranny in China. This coincided with a disturbing trend that our current president seems to be a little too hospitable to various despots that have been sworn enemies of America and its way of life, i.e., Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, etc., as well as with regimes that have records of human rights abuses.
I know that I should focus a little more on "fun" pop culture events like
Kanye West's hogging the limelight at the VMA Awards and who are the big winners on American Idle :sleep2:, or the color of Britney Spears' panties, etc., but, it's like they say: Write what you know. If I talk about metal bands at length, it makes sense when I practice on guitar to be able to play toward that end. If I write about topics relevant to Christianity forever and a day, it is because I would like to be an author in that field. If
I criticize this current administration, it is because I am a commentator, or would like to be one professionally. It's easy to write a lot about where one's interests lie, and make astute observations.

Well apparently you can't blame Obama for this one - watched the local news last night and Toronto allowed some sort of celebration downtown in one of the squares there. I was surprised at just how many people seemed to be there.
Hey - guess this is what democracy IS about - allowing everyone to be themselves regardless of their background as long as they're not hurting anyone else. ;)

And I just find it interesting how you relate everything back to him in some way or another. If that's your interest and you get your kicks from that, fine. I wasn't telling you what you can or cannot post, as bandito said, I was just simply making an observation and commenting on it. Just as you have every right to make that an interest of yours, I have a right to criticize it. That's what a message board is for.

Yeah, well, I haven't always been about just ragging on our current administration. If I go on about something totally awesome like metal (the MUSIC, not the highly electricity-condusive substance made of ores and alloys), then is that "obsessive" as well? I have posted quite a bit about Obama in the political board, which is the most appropriate place for such topics. I don't recall posting everything about him in other boards or threads.
Yes, I do have other interests. But if a person shows an interest in political topics, then naturally the president is going to be a likely target. If people find many of the problems that our country faces as a direct result of our president's actions, then people are going to complain about it. It could be someone in his administration, or something or someone relating back to him and his policies.
Focusing on a certain topic at length isn't "obsessive". If a person wants to be an author or commentator about a certain subject, then they follow things and write about what they feel is important. For all this silly talk that an Obama critic is being "obsessive", if a person were to come on and harp on about wonderful Obama was and how he was the greatest thing since sliced cheese and his wondrous abilities to walk on water, etc., like everyone was at the beginning of the year, then that wouldn't be "obsessive".
If a major crisis or disaster were to hit our country, or things were take a drastic turn for the worse and the national tone soured, of course we would be blaming Obama at length. Isn't that why we elected him, to change things? People are still waiting after about a year.

You know what, I find it interesting that you say you're not obsessive, but then you freak out and go make a thread about it because of one little comment I made. If you're so hell bent on your patriotism, why has what I said bothered you so much? Be like, "**** yeah I am" and move on. Chill the hell out, buddy.

So to get back ON topic, how long are the red and yellow lights going to be on the Empire State Building? I still think that they are just trying to celebrate the diversity that NYC has. Like I said before, they must have at least a thousand or more Chinese in that city. And I bet 1,000 is a low number. I think that I've seen them do blue lights for Jewish holidays as well. It's kind of cool, IMO.
