View Full Version : What cartoons did you watch as a kid?

Mary Covey

I'm almost 12, but already I know! Cartoons used to take up HALF my programming. The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The New Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, Ducktales, Tale Spin, Goof Troop, Muppet Babies, Peanuts Specials/Videos, The Alvin Show (I was pretty upset when Nickelodeon took it off!)
Rugrats, Doug, and maybe more.
Oh, and I also watched shows with my mom and dad as a young kid, from 1989-1994 (or so). Murphy Brown, Roseanne, Designing Women, Coach, Major Dad, and others I don't remember.

I used to watch anything that was on CBS Saturday mornings in the 80's-early 90's. I can't remember everything but I do remember Muppet Babies, Pee-Wee's Playhouse(if you want to consider that a cartoon), Garfield and Friends, in my opinion--the best cartoon character of all time! (Garfield, that is), WWF Rock 'n Wrestling, Thundercats and the list goes on. Whatever was on i probably watched. Mostly, I watched CBS but I'd tune into other channels, too. Cartoons these days aren't the way they used to be!

In fact, I forgot to add the Jetsons and the Flinstones which came on before I was alive but they're still classics and I can still watch them--actually, I'd still watch some of these cartoons if I knew when or if they were on. Most of my schedule consists of wrestling these days. I can't remember all of the cartoons I watched but I think you all get the idea. Anything from the 80's and early 90's I watched. Oh yeah, don't forget Fraggle Rock and the Smurfs. They just keep popping into my head. I better stop before I think of more!

Oh yeah, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! How could I forget? I really liked that show but I only saw the first movie. When they started up with 2 and 3, it got ridiculous, in my opinion.

Gosh, now I feel old! Most of these old cartoons were around when I was in my 20's!

When I was a kid, I used to watch Pink Panther, Scooby Doo, Flinstones, Hong Kong Fooey, Bugs Bunny, Lidsville, and the Archies!

Also, there was an animated Jackson 5 cartoon I used to love!

Reading these posts, I get the impression that I'm the old man on the board (33 years old, btw). I used to love Saturday mornings. I'd get a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch or Count Chocula and watch Superfriends, Captain Caveman, Jabberjaw, Grape Ape, the Laff-A-Lympics, Batman/Tarzan hour, Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, The Pink Panther, Hong Kong Phooey, Fat Albert, DynoMutt, The Groovy Ghoulies, The Hair Bear Bunch, Speed Buggy, Woody Woodpecker, Mr. Magoo, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Pebbles & Bamm Bamm, various versions of Popeye, The Flintstones, and The Archies, and, of course, Schoolhouse Rock in between cartoons. There were also several live action shows I'd watch like The Shazam/Isis hour, Land Of The Lost, Electra-Woman and Dyno-Girl, The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Comedy Hour (or something like that), HR Pufnstuf, Big John, Little John, and Sigmund The Sea Monster. There are more, but I've probably bored you enough. I do think that the networks screwed up by putting so much news and crap on Saturday mornings now and taking off so many cartoons. For that I say, Long Live Cartoon Network!!!! lol

I had quite a few favorite cartoons as a kid, many of them from Nickelodeon. I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle, Heathcliff, Ren & Stimpy and others. My most favorite cartoon then (and still today) is The Underdog Show. I never wanted to miss that show. Another one of my favorite shows was Wienerville (also on Nickelodeon). That show featured the Alvin Show, Mr. Magoo, and others that I can't remember this minute.

I recall watching several shows! But my favorites were Super mario Bros., My Little Pony, and Muppet babies. Then, I turned to The Hogan Family in 1997. I think that Sandy Duncan were life savers because UPN really thought smart about the other T.V. stations. If I am ever up in the morning, UPN is still my favorite morning station any day of my week. They air I Love Lucy, Family Matters and lots more. Plus, they air Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, and Joe. I wonder, even though I am talking about a sitcom, if UPN can still air Valerie on Sat. mornings. It is worth a shot.

The old theatrical cartoons

TV cartoons:
Besides the usual H-B, Ward, also
these: TTV's Underdog, King and Odie, Tennessee Tuxedo and their others;Bozo the Clown; The orginal versions of Gumby,Beany and Cecil, and Alvin and the Chipmunks then called The Alvin Show, Calvin and the Colonel (Amos and Andy's Kingfish as a fox and Andy as a bear, not AMOS and Andy as often wrongly thought, like Snuffy Smith taking over Barney Google, Kingfish took over Amos which brings me to...), the just-mentioned SNuffy Smith and Beetle Bailey and Krazy Kat and Popeye King Features Shorts, and many other 60s show (I was born in 1960.)

I'm older than most of you folks on this site, so some of the cartoons I used to watch some of you probably never heard of.

Back in the 1960's some of my favorite shows were:

1. Bugs Bunny and Looney Tunes, including a lot of cartoons that you can only see on Cartoon Network today.

2. Popeye the Sailor-all the old "Famous Studios" releases, as well as the King Features limited animation episodes from the early '60's.

3.All the old Hanna-Barbera superhero series (Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Samson and Goliath, Birdman & The Galaxy Trio, etc.) They don't make 'em like that, anymore, and shame on 'em!

4. The "Archie" shows. These were pretty faithful to the comics (except for the Big Moose-Reggie relationship, which was de-fanged).

5. I can't forget the other classic shows, ie The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Top Cat, Touche Turtle, Wally Gator, Astro Boy, Marine Boy, Felix the Cat(with the Professor and Rock Bottom), Filmation's Superman and Batman cartoons, the original Spider-Man cartoons, Jonny Quest...the list is endless...
