I think "Munsters Today" ran 1988-91. It was really horrible, though -- lousy scripts and cheap-looking (it was videotaped instead of filmed!). John Schuck was terrible as Herman! When did Herman get so fat?

Lee Meriweather was a pretty good Lily, though.

I think the black & white are probably better.

The Black and white ones are way better. They have a warmth and feeling. All while trying to entertain and make you laugh. The man who played Herman in this newer series never saw the old episodes with Fred Gwynn. In 1995 and 1997 there were 2 "Munster" movies with different characters. In the first Munster movie, a brief cameo from the origianl cast came in at a retaraunt in their original type costumes.

I saw the original cast make a cameo appearance in the original 1990's Munsters tv movie (all except for Gwynne who had died in real life). The original actors were all dressed normal but they acted kooky!

Can't Compare!

I have seen the new Munsters and they can't hold a candle to the originals! As the saying goes,"You can't improve on perfection!" Ain't it the truth?
I'd like to correspond via e-mail to any or all fans of the original Munsters! :(

I never seen or heard of the Munsters Today until when I saw it on the board. How is it and is it an good?

The Munsters Today was WELL superior to The Munsters. I am saying this because its my opinion, NOT because I want to start a giant debate with other fans of the original... Everyone is entitled to their opinion in this world, of course.

The Munsters Today was HUGELY successful here in the UK, and ran for three re-run series over two years on our ITV. I am working on an online petition for the show to come to video/DVD here in the UK.

People slag the show off for not matching the original, and most peoples gripes are with the characters. Having spoken to cast and crew I'll be displaying my "interesting" analysis of the show on my website... and some truths about the adaption of the show from the original and the similarities and the differences: a lot of the props from the original show were used on the re-make, like the clock, the organ and the doors etc. Shame the stairs were destroyed in a fire as I would have LOVED em for my house.

Chiao, cheers, peace... Frank :p

The "Munsters Today" was awful.

It's like comparing a Dodge Dart to a Ferrari.

Different things work for different people I suppose... But that does not mean that something is bad, wrong or a load of rubbish. Did the Munsters Today mentally or physically hurt anyone? I think now... so its all just down to differences in opinion, and the UK Munsters fans in this case disagree with the USA Munsters fans... Fair enough.

Ciao, peace, cheers

I've seen the first 4 episodes and the Pilot. It's ok, but very very corny.

In 1966, directly after the series' cancellation, a feature film called MUNSTER,
GO HOME was released. In my opinion, it was as good as the series (if not
better). Then, in 1981, a TV-movie reuniting most of the original cast, THE
MUNSTERS' REVENGE, was aired. Not as good as the series or the first movie,
but still not bad. (Sid Caesar and Howie Morris were marvelous.) What both
of these productions had was most of the original cast. For that reason, they
should have stopped after the second feature-length film. In THE MUNSTERS
TODAY, for some inexplicable reason Herman (John Schuck) had gained fifty pounds and Marilyn had regressed to the age of 16. It didn't help that the show was in garish color (instead of black & white). Then there was the 1995 TV-movie, HERE COME THE MUNSTERS starring Edward Hermann as Herman (who, Al Lewis said, eerily reminded him of the late Fred Gwynne) and finally THE MUNSTERS' SCARY LITTLE CHRISTMAS (1998; TV-movie) with Sam Mc-
Murray as Herman. None of the remakes managed to recapture the magic
and appeal of the original. And that's the inherent problem with any remake
that does not (or cannot) use the original cast. Anything is going to pale in
comparison. Every time.

There was also a short lived cartoon series called "The Mini-Munsters". It aired in 1973 on ABC.

Oh God that show was awful. The original is the best and the ONLY ONE that should be seen. John Schuck, I am in agreement with you, he made the character of Herman seem so "wuss" like and stupid. Herman (the original) was cool!

Not even a good scipt could have helped this show, Lilly was the only bright spot of the whole cast.

I can't remember which series I saw first, "The Munsters" or "The Munsters Today". I was not a fan of John Schuck as Herman, either. I enjoyed Lee as Lily and even Howard as Grandpa (but I knew him already from "Gimme a Break").

I think another problem with the show was that it kind of backtracked by being filmed in front of an audience whereas the original show was filmed on a closed set and had several scenes take place outside (they also had the exterior of the mansion to use as a backdrop in most episodes). They also showed several rooms within the mansion and this (IMO) gives it a slight edge over The Addams Family.

I was 8 years old when it premiered, so I watched it faithfully and have fond memories of "The Munsters Today".

I tried to watch the remake a few times, but, after 2 or 3 mins, i was hitting the clicker button....the old show rules......Better than any remake, OR the Adams Family!

I had to quote myself on this one- I just received a dvd with 5 episodes of The Munsters Today on it and it was a terrible show. I'm embarrassed to say that I used to watch it.

If they would have stuck with the original formula it might have worked. Shuck's Herman was just too stupid and should have been played more seriously. Actually he was the wrong actor for the part.
