I enjoyed this series during its first-season run on NBC and received an auto-
graphed picture of Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare in response to my fan letter. I didn't see any of the ABC episodes. According to THE COMPLETE DIRECTORY TO PRIME TIME TV SHOWS, the series ran from Sept. 1968 to Sept. 1970 on NBC and from Sept. 1969 to Sept. 1970 on ABC. It was based on the 1947 movie starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Gull Cottage was a charming little house located somewhere along a desolate stretch of the New England coastline, overlooking Schooner Bay. There was just one slight problem--it was haunted by the ghost of the previous owner, Capt. Daniel Gregg, a 19th century sea captain. Attractive widow Carolyn Muir moved in with her two young children, their pet dog Scruffy, and their housekeeper. For some reason, only Carolyn and one of her children could see Capt. Gregg. Charles Nelson Reilly played Claymore Gregg, the Captain's nephew (whom he
loathed). Everytime Claymore had tried to rent the cottage to someone, Capt.
Gregg would try to scare them off. At first, the Captain resented Mrs. Muir's
"invasion"--but eventually established a truce and even developed a fondness
for each other. (Of course, nothing could come of their romance because,
after all, he was a ghost.) There were some very funny moments (Reta
Shaw as Martha, the housekeeper, provided some laughs), and also some
touching moments between Capt. Gregg and Carolyn Muir's son as the
Captain served as a sort of father figure.

and the movie was set in the early 1900s; while the show was set in "modern" times. And the movie took place over a number of years, while the show didn't. And in the movie, Carolyn Muir had just 1 daughter, while in the show she had a daughter and a son.
Like other movies that were made into TV shows, the writers just ignored the ending of the movie.
