DS needs a lot of dental work, which we are paying for. We have a new payment plan which will pay for some of it, but we have to see new-to-us dentists. I always suspect a dentist of doing more work than necessary, so when he said that he had to dig out all of his old (silver) fillings to be replaced, I saw RED.

I told ds to ask for his xrays and that we would get a 2nd opinion from another dentist in the plan. DS thinks it's not "respectful".

Anyone ?

No, it's called due diligence. And I agree - unless there's a problem with the filling or tooth with further decay, I would not just rip out all fillings and have them replaced. A dentist tried to do that to me once. Even though the silver fillings were causing me RA in my joints, over the course of the next 5 years all the teeth that had the fillings needed more work anyway so I got them done on an "as needed" basis.

For starters, your dentist doesn't have to know about getting a second opinion and if he did find out and was "offended" then you need to find a new dentist anyway. Any respectable doctor or dentist has no qualms about their patients getting second and even third opinions.

Afterall, WHO'S hard-earned money is paying for this, right?
