View Full Version : Do you like your job?
For years everyone tells you to pick a career you love. I'm not sure how I ended up becoming a corporate trainer - I kind of just fell into it, but I do enjoy it. It's definately the best job I've ever had. I work at company headquarters, have my own laptop and go on business trips (to exciting places like Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania). But it is really a wonderful job. I don't know if I'll always be a trainer, but for now it's perfect for me. I don't think I love it, but it's interesting meeting so many employees, and to try to get them excited about banking ;)
What do you guys do for a living? Do you enjoy it? Think you'll ever switch careers? If you're in school, what do you plan on doing?

Right now, no. The position I loved was cut and I had to go back to the phones. It sucks.

I work in sales and marketing. There are times I like my job and times I don't. Right now things have been going a bit slow but I'm not stressed or anything.

I am blessed because I love my job. There is something new just about every day, I get to meet different people, I travel for free, benefits, great pay. If my children are sick I can work from home.

I don't love it, but I do enjoy it. When I finally can teach American History I will love my job. I like the people that I work with and I think helping the students (the future of America) is rewarding. The pay is okay and the benefits are better than average. The jobs lacks challenge though. I also don't think that I'm making the best use of my education or being the best I can be with this job. However, I do like going to work each day, and I am thankful for that. :)

Me too :)
Its been four months now.
Before I got laid off I was working in the automotive industry and hated it. They were already cutting back and finding ways to cut corners so we were doing three times as much work and were expected to get everything done perfectly. There was also a negative vibe going around since the industry is in such bad shape, and some of the people I worked with were jerks(some were really cool). Frankly I was miserable, so I wasnt too dissapointed when I got let go, and besides I knew it was coming.
I dont know what kind of gig I will have next but I cant do factory work anymore and nor will I return to the automotive industry. I'm out.

I'm not OMGCRAZY about the new job I just started - I wish I was still at my last job, but what can ya do. It's decent so far, and it's full-time, at least. I basically do two huge tasks the entire shift, and I'm fine with that. :) (backroom monkey at the store everybody loves to hate, hi!)

I'm in the transportation industry. It's has it's ups & downs, I can't say I totally LOVE it but it is good money. I know some people say money isn't everything but when you're getting your bills paid and not really hurting financially, especially with today's economy, it is rather a big deal to me.:D

I basically like my job. It has its ups and downs, like anything. My co-workers are SUPER NICE (I'm really lucky) but one of my bosses can be a real b*tch. The other's rather decent though. And the $ and benes are quite good. I feel very blessed. Sometimes the work hours can be intense - but its seasonal and then after the heavy intense work shifts there's next to zero for a few weeks. So I've learned to ride the peaks and valleys....

Ugh, that sucks, Lauren... I've totally been there.
Last Summer, I worked at a clothing boutique that I had always loved to shop at... it was so high class and fashionable, and the women were so beautiful... I actually applied just for fun, and ended up getting the job, and was thrilled. But once I started working there, almost instantly in fact, I realized they and the store weren't as beautiful as I had seen on the outside of things. In all my life, no one has made me feel as insecure and "un"beautiful as those women made me feel. I felt so belittled, and like I couldn't do a damn thing, not only did I have to deal with them... but a bunch of annoying customers ordering me around all the time to help them find clothes for this event or that. It was horrible... I would actually feel sick to my stomach every day I had to go in... finally, after 2 hellish months, I quit to go to school full time... and it was the best decision I ever made... and I don't care how much I have to scale down on money, I will never take a job there again.

In this economy, having a keeping a job is a big plus and will look good on a resume. Besides most skills are transferable. For example, a Bank Teller could be one at a credit unionor a cashier or ticket agent for a company.
If you like the people you come across, or can at least find something you like about them, let it show in your demeanor. Be friendly yet professional. Somebody someplace will notice and think to themselves "this person works very well with others" and THAT will open many doors.

I've been at my job for 7 1/2 years and about 90% of that time I've hated my job with a purple passion. However at the moment, I really like it. Maybe I'm just so used to being there that it doesn't bother me anymore. I used to avidly search for something else, but then I realized that I've been doing this so long that my boss thinks I'm good at it so there's really no reason to change careers.

Not really. I mean, I love the place that I work at (i.e., the people and environment) but not the job of checking. It gets really boring and customers are frustrating. I also hate standing up in a box for 8 hours straight. A job is a job though, and money is money- I should be lucky to have a job in this day and age.

Very nicely said. AND TRUE. Security detail, of any kind, is important and valued work. Sometimes it takes others to remind us of the good we bring to the world through our professional endeavors.

thanks mike for clearing that up and for your kind words. although, i have worked both sides of the coin in the past. i've done the whole "protect and serve" routine, like physically holding people down when i worked in the psych ward of a local hospital. but i have not done that detail in almost 2 years. nonetheless, i appreciate the sentiments liza.
