They signed Burnett!! Whoo Hoo!!

Bye-bye, Burnett

The Raiders saw another potential free-agent signee go elsewhere Tuesday when Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett picked the Chargers over the Raiders, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

Burnett visited the Raiders last week but left for a trip to San Diego without a contract. He also reportedly visited the Texans, all with an eye on going someplace he could be a starter. In Oakland, he would have had to beat out returning starter Ricky Brown for the strongside linebacker job.

A story on raiderbeat.com said the Raiders offered Burnett a contract and left it on the table all week, but a Raiders official called to say they never offered him a contract.

The Raiders previously tried to sign Jaguars left tackle Khalif Barnes last week before talks broke down. Barnes remains on the market. Former Broncos offensive tackle Erik Pears is the only outside free agent signed by the Raiders, who have kept 10 of their own free agents.

Update:

Burnett agreed to a two-year contract with San Diego. Burnett's deal is worth $5.5 million with a $2 million signing bonus. Burnett's base salaries are guaranteed whether or not he gets injured or released. So, he receives about $4 million in guaranteed money. Burnett's agent Ricky Lefft said the Cowboys made a late play for the linebacker but the financial package wasn't good enough. Oakland, San Francisco, Tennessee Houston and Green Bay had expressed interest in Burnett, who finished second on the team in special teams tackles with 19. Burnett, as the third down linebacker, had 38 total tackles, two sacks, four quarterback pressures and three passes defended.
