Totally agree, there's no reason you should have to cut your hair for a job. but wear it in a ponytail, braided, or in a bun and you should be fine... while I was reading your post I kept thinking how cool it must look, actually.:D

But unfortunately if you do want to land a good job at a secure company, you'll have to at least compramise probably. I know I had to during the 80s and 90s. It might be a bit more lax out there now, and depends on the "corporate environment" you're in. If it's something artsy like the entertainment or advertisement industry, then you're cool. If it's the financial, engineering, legal type of industry - you're going to need to tone it down a bit. The length won't be an issue (you LUCKY &#(@* - I would have killed for my hair to grow that lenght! :lol:) but the two tone might.

When the white in my hair first started to come in, it was right down the middle. I thought it looked cool - like Lily Munster or something. My boss called me in one day and asked (nicely) that I colour it - that it was too "funky". I complied, but it made me wish I had stayed with my arts instead of being an EA to a CFO at a stuffy corporation.

Are these people holding down jobs that are clerical or professional? Depends on their longterm goals and usually at least at first, it's best to err on the side of being a little more conservative.

You had to make natural hair unnatural...wow, that flat out sucks.

Exactly Sarah. Play the game just to get your foot in the door at least. I worked with a gal who's older than me, but has a trim figure and you can tell is young "at heart". Her hair isn't that long (just past her shoulders) but she has it coloured blonde, then under at the back, it's both black AND red. I looks quite sharp actually - I almost went with blonde underneath mine (the reverse) a while ago but now I'm job hunting. She usually had it pulled up and wrapped in that comb where the pieces stick out. No one ever said a negative word about it.

Luckily these days we are freer to be creative and ourselves. As Cathy said, it just kills me that I was asked to cover something that was natural. But this guy was a bit of a stuffed shirt accountant background type so it doesn't surprise me.
