BOSTON (AP) - A lesbian couple who led the fight for gay marriage in Massachusetts has filed for divorce. Julie and Hillary Goodridge were among seven gay couples who filed a lawsuit that led to a court ruling making Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriages in 2004. The couple became the public face of the debate in the state and married the first day same-sex marriages became legal.

The divorce case was filed last week in Suffolk Probate and Family Court and was not unexpected. The couple announced they were separating in 2006.

Messages left for the Goodridges were not immediately returned Tuesday.

I really don't have a joke for this one.

And it won't be the last one......so I don't think anyone is surprised that these will happen as well.

People who are opposed to gay marriages are going to have a field day over this one.

I am personally opposed to gay marriage and homosexuality. And it is not
my personal opinion, it is the opinion of the Bible and the Bible is what
Christians strive to follow in their daily lives.

I don't condone the act of homosexuality, but I don't see why gay couples can't have the same rights as straight couples. There are far worse crimes than loving an adult of the same gender. I'm more concerned about rapists, pedophiles, and teens having sex than I am about two consenting adults.

According to the Bible, divorcing your spouse and marrying another is also considered a sin, meaning Liz Taylor is definitely going to Hell ;) You never see people protesting those who cheat on their spouses, have sex before they marry, or divorce and remarry.

haha, good point. why isn't there any outrage at the legalization of divorce? some people just like to pick and choose and pretend the constitution doesn't exist.

establishment clause of the first amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."

Whether one agrees/disagrees with same sex marriage... one cannot deny people their rights because of a disagreement of their lifestyle.

That's discrimination. They should be allowed to get married/divorced like everyone else.
