View Full Version : What stereotypes annoy you most?

Stereotypes ~ we're all familiar with them, but which ones annoy you most?

Gay stereotypes annoy me above all else. Gay and transvestite are NOT the same thing and most gay men are not sissified like society would have you believe, and most lesbians don't shave their heads and act like men. I wish people realized that the only reason it seems like the stereotypes are true here is because most gay/bi/lesbian people are indistinguishable from everyone else and can't be picked out of a crowd, so the ones who fit the stereotype are more recognizable. Since I grew out of my "emo" phase, as some would call it, nobody can ever tell looking at me that I'm not straight.

Gay stereotypes also annoy me, as do stereotypes of religion and different countries/cultures.

ahh, good thread.

i've got to say the emo stereotype annoys me to no end. not only are emos looked down on as worthless and stupid individuals, but it seems that anyone who has any traits of the stereotype is labeled an emo and endlessly made fun of. if someone says that they're suffering from a self-harm addiction, or even just a broken heart, some jackass will come in and say "HAHAHAHAHA U WHINY EMO GO ****IN KILL URSELF HAHAHHA!!!!11" it just boils my blood. i used to wonder why everyone hated them so much, so i googled "i hate emos", and the only reasons anyone gave was that they're whiny and don't have any serious issues. right, like there's no possible way that any of them could be suffering from trauma, abuse, or just a damn chemical imbalance. i'd love to see how these idiots would handle it if one of their friends or relatives got extremely depressed, or if they grew up with these beliefs and their children grew up to be depressed. something tells me they wouldn't be so damn judgmental.

i went through that phase myself but it was because i liked the clothes and wanted to express myself that way. i remember feeling so unique, and original, yet people would tell me i wasn't original because there "are a million emo kids out there and you all look exactly alike." i think that's what annoys people ~ people who are labeled "emo" often refer to how much they stand out and are different and being an individual, but really it's still following a trend and conforming to specific character traits. i always felt original and unique but now that i look back at my old pictures, i wasn't at all, especially since there is (in my opinion) more of a uniform "emo" look than any other label. and then there's also the argument that just because someone has depression, is suffering from trauma/abuse, doesn't mean they have to dress a specific way to express it.

but i'm not one to judge, so nothing in this post is judging, just giving my take on it. i think everyone should stop putting labels on eachother and let them live their lives.

I hate stereotypes about southerners. Not all of us are stupid or ignorant. Not all of us belong to the KKK or hate minorities. And not all of us support President Bush. I'm so sick of people thinking that because I have a southern accent I must be stupid and not know anything. I'm tired of being looked down upon because of it.

Look at Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Harry S. Truman, All from the south; all of them smart individuals.

i agree. i've never understood the problem with loosely labeling others as preppy, goth, jock, or whatever. it's only when people think that they can actually judge others based on characteristics of stereotypes that i get really annoyed. with teenagers, it seems that your taste in music and fashion has to be limited to that of one stereotype, or else you'll get called a "poser". retarded.

One that's always bothered me in TV shows and movies is about intelligent people always being unattractive, unathletic weirdos. I think it sends a negative message to children that you can't be smart and beautiful, popular, and/or athletic at the same time.

Being black I say I have to admit I hate all the stereotypes about my race

We dont all eat watermelon(frankly I think watermelon is disgusting)
Not all black men are naturally gifted in sports(I dont even like sports)
Not all young black men are criminals, drug pushers or drug users, deadbeat dads, ignorant, and not every black man is dying to get his hands on a white female.

Not all black people speak slang(or ebinomics or whatever they calling it). I dont use a lot of those terms

Not all black people call each other the n word. I dont

Not all black people like rap music (I hate it)

Not all of us can dance

Also a lot of black people are not proud of living in the ghetto

There are several young black people who take school and studying very seriously.

You get my drift.

I suppose I broke the mold. How many black guys you know that are hot for Liz Montgomery?
How many black guys you know that when they were a teenager they would wear Metallica and Megadeth T shirts.
How many black guys you know are fanatics about TV shows made before 1969?

Told you I was different lol

Ok just wanted to get that off my chest

Thank you for letting me vent.

I hate the stereotype that all bisexual girls are easy and willing to do it with anyone (trying to keep it clean here...I'm sure you get my drift). It just pisses me off that anyone would assume I'd jump into bed with them (and their significant others!) just because I'm bi (/end rant). A lot of us are intelligent, sensitive people who love others because we're physically and emotionally attracted to them just like any other person--we're not doing it to please someone else or be a sex toy

I agree to an extent. I can understand how people get offended, and they have every right to be...but I'm one of those people that just likes to laugh things off. I make fun of everyone, including myself. Laughing is a way to say, "hey, this stuff we are dealing with is ridiculous when it's all said and done." But that's just me, so I'm careful to respect people who don't feel the same way.

Even though we love to laugh at ourselves, I do get offended when people seriously do think Canadians are nothing but touque wearing, pot smoking, beer swilling hicks sitting around in our lumberjackets, watching the hockey game speaking French Canadian and apologizing from our igaloos.

To a degree, yes, we're like that, (NO igaloos tho) but so what if we're laid back, we're also involved in many great things worldwide (i.e. cutting edge of new medicines and cures, etc.) We're not a bunch of wussy dummies here at all. Just remember the Battle of Normandy in WWII. :D

I get angry when people assume that all Christians are pig-headed, intolerant Bible bashers (I call myself a New Age Christian because I still have my Christian roots but I'm very much a New Ager.)

I also don't like being told I'm crazy just because of my New Age beliefs. Channelling spirits, astral projection, creating our own reality, that kind of thing.

yeah, i hate the stereotype that if you're a pound too heavy, you're a lard ass overeater, and if you're a pound too light, you put your finger down your throat after every meal. that's just how society judges girls. they have to be absolutely perfect weight to not be made fun of. i've had people seriously get concerned and on my case because i'm skinny and they thought i had an eating disorder (though i never have and never would), and being concerned is fine. i'd just be a lot less annoyed by this stereotype if society didn't think eating disorders were hilarious.

True, true. I'm both a New Ager and a Christian and I'm not bigoted in any sense.

Some people would consider me to be an "unusual" Christian because I don't believe in Hell or Satan and I don't believe that God punishes people or judges them (this is very much influenced by the New Age beliefs and the Conversations with God books which are very New Agey.

I don't believe the Bible is 100% true. I think it contains a lot of truth and wisdom but I think some of the people who wrote it just inserted their own ideas and not ideas which were God's. For instance, although the Bible forbids communication with spirits, I don't believe that God has a problem with it. I attend a spiritualist church and would like to become a medium myself. I also want to successfully project from my body and get onto the astral plane.

Well since we're talking about where we're from, not all people fron New York STATE are from the city. When you're from New York (the state) and you tell someone not from around here where you're from, a lot of people just assume the city and you have to clarify. Upstate NY is nothing like the city, not even close. Lots of farmland and small towns around here.

Also it was mentioned that if a guy isnt trying to go to bed with every female he lays his eyes on or goes to a strip clup he must be gay. I like the ladies, but there is a such thing as class and having morals. Also I think strip bars are a waste of money.

See, I can already imagine what group you would have been in at my high school lol It was a very diverse place, pretty much. I'm not saying that it was always smiles and laughter, but people were mature about lifestyle differences (and I hate to use "lifestyle" - so that's only there for lack of a better word). But one thing people could never stand was fakeness. Never pretend to be something that you're not, because the people who really were that would get pissed at you, and everyone would look at you like the pathetic little mess that you are. This one girl wanted to be part of that "emo" crowd so bad, but what she didn't realize is that the kids that she thought were the "emo" type really weren't...they were just as nice and as friendly as everybody else. But this girl would always brag about how unique and different she was, yet she chose to be "unique" because everybody was "unique." The difference between the people that she wanted to be like and her is that...well, they really were unique. She was just "unique." If that makes sense.

High school stereotypes are fun ones, let me tell you. I learned all about them in one of the last classes I took before I graduated. Not all cheerleaders are attention whores who have copious amounts of coitus. Some of them are really, really, really sweet girls with great, bubbly personalities. Not all football players are dumb jocks who only care about football and sports and getting laid and drunk and the such. Some of them are really, really, really great guys. One of the first people that I "came out" to (and I hate to use the term "come out") was one of the quarterbacks, and ever since then, that guy, who had already been one of my close friends, has become one of my very best friends in the whole world. He identifies as straight, but he takes real good care of me lol

looking back at my old pictures and such, i do think i was fake in a way. like i have a lot of myspace friends and there was a certain look i was trying to achieve and a certain style of pictures i was trying for, mostly to appeal to my myspace friends. at the beginning of this school year, when i stopped spending so much time online and trying to impress everyone, i started dressing differently (and now i don't have any distinguishing look). i was ridiculous though, but a lot of people copied my outfits and wore the beaded bracelets and necklaces, so maybe it wasn't so bad after all.

Ah, you were just a kid who was easily influenced, that's all. I'm actually proud to say that I was never swayed too much by what trends were, whether they were mainstream trends or the more counterculture-ish trends. I was always just...whatever. I wore what I wanted to wear and nobody really cared. Like, if fashion came up in a discussion, I'd be the butt of jokes for a short while, but no one ever really pointed me out and picked on me. It's not like what I wore was exactly dorky either...my look was always more retro. It's Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, that's the true South

The media (with the help of so-called Evangelicals)has turned Christians into finger pointing, self righteous, bigots. I agree that there are many many "Christians" like that. But not all! I have been a Christian my whole life and I don't want to be lumped into that pile of crap!
Or all Christians are Neo-Nazis and that the Bible is just "propoganda".

I stopped fixing my hair so much. It used to have to be perfectly straight before I'd leave the house, but now I don't do much to it at all and I kind of like my natural hair texture. and I'm sure you look nice regardless of what you do, or don't do, with your hair :)
Aw thanks :) I'm sure you look good too. I think you have the confidence that I never had, so you should definitely use that to your advantage in high school, and just not give a damn about what everybody thinks. Trust me, if I had that mindset throughout the whooooooole three years instead of just the last one, I would have had...well, let's just say that I would have see a lot more action than I did LOL

oh yeah, i hate that too. everyone else seems to think that we all wear cowboy hats and practice archery as a hobby (at least in arizona) and that southern states are nothing but rural, dried out deserts that stay hot all year long. i hate it when i say something on the internet during the winter about how cold it is outside, and someone says "OMGZ I THOUGHT YOU LIVED IN ARIZONA." good lord.i agree ive lived in az for almost 19 years and i very rarely if ever wear cowboy attire know zilch about archery and right now here in the northern part of the state where i live its about 33 degees but even when when i lived in tucson and phoinex we had our share of cold days plus lots of people dont know that in feb. it rains almost every day for about 2 weeks not to mention the summer monsoon storms

Count me in for the straight male not jumping into bed with the 1st woman that says yes or dirty dancing with them at every dance. Being a straight male, I want to full fill goals before I have babies (with my WIFE and not my girlfriend, btw)

Another is Christians being racist Bible beaters who think they can't leave their homes and think Halloween is Satan's birthday.
1) A lot of Christians I know celebrate Halloween.
2) The theme of the Bible is love. If these "Christians" would read their Bibles, they'd see that. (see siggy)
3) Judge and ye shall be judged. You can't judge somebody by what you see and/or hear. If you confront somebody who is living in sin, confront them out of love and knowledge of what they are doing. Beating them with the Bible and telling them they're going to hell is not love. Jesus didn't beat the woman at the well with the Bible and said "out, Satan!" We (as people) are playing God if we think we can change them by doing that. And we're pushing them away from Him.
No wonder Christianity is going down the toilet.

Republicans are raciest, Bible-beaters is another. Yes, we don't agree with abortion or homosexual marriage, but think about this: God made rules for a reason. Not to be "mean." Abortion causes mental health problems. And I think if two of the same sex sleep together, they get a disease (not sure. but why else would this be a rule?) The Bible is a self-help guide to a happy life. Not a self-righteous guide to a miserable life. And remember: a Republican stopped slavery.

That if a person is Italian, he must be part of the Mafia. Not true.
When People in the interior of the U.S. think that people who live in big cities or on the coasts are somehow irreligious, less "American", unpatriotic, elite, snobby and immoral, and that somehow people who grew up, or lived in a city live a less virtuous or wholesome lifestyle than someone from a small town or the country.
When People in the city think that someone who lives in the south, or rural areas, must be less educated, less intelligent and narrowminded. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are all kinds of people everywhere. The problem with stereotypes, I believe, is that they are inaccurate. They make sweeping generalizations and only see things in "black and white", which is a type of ignorance in itself.

Sorry about that, Monika. :( My brother (as well as other "Christians" in my family) thinks that's what Christianity is all about as well because that's we are portrayed on TV and movies: self-righteous Bible-beaters. He (my brother) doesn't make fun of me for it but at the same time, he doesn't really agree with me. He's agnostic, I guess you could say. Doesn't really care. I wish everybody would see the Bible as a way to a happier, healthier life and not a life of rules, rules and more rules. Like I said, God made every rule (divorce, premarital sex, etc.) for a reason. Not to be hard to get along with.
Divorce can lead to hate, which sometimes leads to revenge, which leads to murder (The Santa Shooter is a good example)
Premarital sex could lead to disease and/or unwanted pregnancy which could lead to abortion, which can lead to mental/emotional stress, plus the end of an innocent life.

I agree. Although I'm female, black stereotypes in general irk me. It amazes me how ignorant people are in this day and age. How many women under the age of 25 are constantly asked how many children do they have. Wtf? Is there something I'm missing? I'm too young for kids and I would like to finish college first. Also, how many people get pulled over by the cops and the first question they ask you is: "Do have any guns or illegal drugs in your car?" What the hell? How about you tell me why I'm being pulled over first.

For the record, I HATE rap music...I think it's degrading and thoroughly about nothing important nor has a positive purpose whatsoever.

I do NOT use the 'N" word, nor would I appreciate being called it by anyone, black or not.

I do not live in the "ghetto" and I AM college educated; and my African American parents are college educated as well. I am educated to know that there is a linguistic difference between standard English and Black English aka Ebonics, and though they are both recognized as equal languages, I know when and how to make the switch between proper English and slang.

Yeah same here

As mentioned before I dont think I can put into words how much I hate rap music. Would much rather listen to rock and roll.

Also education is a big thing in my family. My mother, her sister and several of their cousins are all college graduates.

Also people like Tupac and Snoop are not good role models for young black kids in my opinion. They should look up to people like Bill Cosby or Berry Gordy who with a loan from his family created a musical empire that is still making people happy some 50 years later.

The Carolinas are almost always considered part of the south. According to a map on Wikipedia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas are almost always considered southern states. Florida, Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia are usually considered south, but not always, and Oklahoma, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware, and WV are sometimes, but not usually.

Biracials/multiracials-the whole "tragic mulatto" syndrome
African-Americans-that they are nothing but lazy, jive talking, race card playing, basketball playing, fried chicken eating, neck rolling, baby making, rap music listening thugs and thugettes.(don't forget that they looooove to start riots)

Hispanics(mostly those from Mexico)-that they all came here illegally.
Single mothers-that they are a bunch of lazy welfare idiots who can't keep their legs closed(up until I was 13, my mother did a fine job as an single mother, it wasn't her fault that my ********* father walked out on us)

Rich kids-that they are nothing but spoiled brats that gets anything that they want.

Bisexuals(women)-that they are easy, switch hitters that ends up "straight" again once the fun of being with another woman runs out.

Gays/lesbians-the entire stereotypes annoy me, especially the one about lesbians, not all of them are butch, veggie eating, flannel wearing "freaks".

Oh wow, there are so many stereotypes that annoy me. The one that's always bothered me most, (and forgive me if this was already mentioned), is the stereotype many people have towards mentally ill people. Seems like most people view the mentally ill as a bunch of useless idiots running around in strait jackets, when in reality, that's usually not the case. It may be in movies, but not in the real world. I've met alot of people diagnosed with several different forms of mental illness, and most of them are just normal people who need help.

People really should take the time to know people like us. I'm bi-polar and some people treat me as if they want nothing to do with me, as if i'm going to kill/hurt them at any moment, not at all. I think some people believe way too much in what they see on T.V or in the movies.
