Police: Man shot for making noise during movie

PHILADELPHIA – A man enraged by a noisy family sitting near him in a movie theater on Christmas night shot the father of the family in the arm, police said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, told the man's family to be quiet, then threw popcorn at the man's son, police said. The victim told police that Cialella was walking toward his family when he stood up and was shot.

Detectives called to the United Artists Riverview Stadium theater in South Philadelphia found Cialella carrying the weapon, a .380-caliber handgun, in his waistband, police said.

Cialella faces six charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault. He remained in custody Saturday. Police said bail had been set, but they did not know the amount.

Lt. Frank Vanore called the incident "scary that it gets to that level of violence from being too noisy during a movie."

Vanore said the 31-year-old victim from suburban Yeadon was hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting. His name had not been released.

It was not immediately known whether Cialella had a lawyer. A woman who answered a call to Cialella's home number Saturday declined to comment.

A theater manager referred calls to Regal Entertainment Group spokesman Dick Westerling, who did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Police could not confirm what movie was playing in the theater, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

There was similar a couple of years ago in teenage boy got stabbed for talking a lot during movie. Some people have short tempers and maybe they should avoid movie theaters.

I agree some people talk too much during a movie. I have noticed that when I go to the movies on Sundays or during the week the audiences are more quiet than the usual audiences on Friday and Saturday.

While people talking during a movie can be downright rude and annoying (as I have experienced it) I do not condone violence with deadly force against people who do it.

The man started to do the right thing by asking them to be quiet. Then he got physical by throwing popcorn and he became the aggressor here. He should have went and got one of the employees to handle it if they did not stop, throwing food was foolish.

Pulling out a gun should only be for self-defense if you feel you are in danger; that was not the case here.

I worked at a movie theater for over 6 years. One time we had to kick out several people for fighting - it spilled over into the lobby and took several of our managers to break it up. ohno: It was not pretty.

This reminds me of the first Scary Movie and the movie theatre scene where the black girl keeps talking :talk: and eventually gets killed (she makes it back for part 2) and the audience is cheering.

I dont like violence but sometimes my imagination gets the better of me ;)

Anyone with that short of fuse and that violent of a temper does not need to be in public settings with a lot of people.

This is why I hate movie theatres. Just give me a DVD in the privacy of my own house. Or a freebie ep on Youtube. I go to the movies probably twice every three yrs.

I agree he should have went and talked to an employee. But often times employees don't do much but give people warnings and one of my friends worked at a theater where a lot of times people kicked out of the theaters would complain to corporate offices and would get movie passes.

it don't really bug me when people talk in moives not as long as it not too loud. i rember going to see indepened day their was this kid tellling his friend every thing before it happedn. one guy told the kid to be quit. i never had problem with peoplle talking . now sometims i have problem when kids kick your chair. that happned to me two times.I alsocan't stand kids crying or scremaing.

And the theatres aren't cheap either Monika. The going rate here in NYC is $12. Ghastly. The last time I went was over the summer when I saw Sex And The City for $7.50 in a matinee. Even at $7.50 you can find some really great DVDs...long live DVDs, DVD players and a private place to watch them with maybe 1 or 2 others.
