In a couple of days, the History Channel is showing "Wrath of God" about the famous Buffalo blizzard of 1977.

Though not alive at the time, I lived a good chunk of my life in Buffalo, where the winters were horribly brutal at times.

I know a lot about bad blizzards.

What'a some of the worst winter weather you can recall?

I'm looking for sleet, hail, snow, wind, wind-chill, arctic conditions... you name it!

The coldest winter I can remember; once, back in 1991; the temps dropped to the mid-20s. I know, that is NOT that cold, but, remember, I live in Southern California, only a short distance from the beach...

Remember a couple of years ago when Upstate New York got that blizzard and it was all over the news??? Yeah, I was right in the middle of that ****.

That was every winter in North Dakota up until 1997. No ****.

The ones I was ALREADY around to witness... 1992-93, 1993-94, 1995-96 and 1996-97 are some of the worst winters I can recall offhand. We had frequent huge blizzards with a TON of snowfall during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. I remember one blizzard in late 1993 where we ended up with 8' of snow and drifts up to 12' high. I've got pictures of whole houses and vehicles completely buried under snow. In fact, I posted pictures here and can probably easily locate them, if I just look.

1995-96 was INSANELY COLD. I mean COLD. COLD as in the local channels played PSAs during every commercial break to emphasize bundling up in 8 layers of clothing when going outside - and no, I am not kidding. Yes, EIGHT layers of clothes. They had cross-section illustrations and everything. I have a picture of my paternal grandma holding up the front page of the local newspaper the day after it hit -86 degrees here. Yep, EIGHTY-SIX degrees BELOW ZERO. It was so cold, they actually canceled school and that never happens here, even when it hits -40 degrees w/o wind chill.

The winter of 1996-97 had the best of both worlds... Subzero temperatures all the time AND frequent blizzards. Then, it warmed up so suddenly in April of 1997, that the towns along the Red River Valley (Grand Forks in particular) got flooded quickly.

i can't remember the exact year though i know it was in the mid 90's. we had a snow/ice storm and a lot of branches fell causing power outages. some areas had no power for 3 days or more. our power was out for a day but my best friend didn't have power for a few days and came to my house to stay. we lived on the bottom of a steep hill and my sisters boyfriend couldn't get his car up it and each time he tried it would just spin out and slide back down the hill. so he had to stay overnight at our house. i remember hating that cause i thought he was so sleezy!

Since I live in TX, we rarely get huge amounts of snow to accumulate. I remember when I was 8 it snowed right after my birthday and it was up past my ankles LOL. I thought it was awesome to see that large amount of snow.

Wilmington, NC - Two snow days on two consecutive Tuesdays - January 18, 2000 and January 25, 2000. At least I got those days off of school, though.

The Blizzard of 1993, though I barely remember it, it was EPIC. No storm has come even remotely close since. A foot of snow with 50 mph winds followed by temperatures around zero. State was closed for nearly a week.

way back in 1967, the ENTIRE city had a HUGE snowstorm that struck the day before Christmas and dumped something like 5' of snow on the entire area. I remember, TV stations were out when that happened, and noone could go anywhere. Our church was forced to cancel Christmas eve mass that year.

It's the Blizzard of '78 here. 55 inches of snow in two days. Crippled the state for weeks.

November or early December 2005. I was in Americorps at the time and we worked for hours in the drizzling rain. There was talk of it freezing overnight. It did so we didn't work the next day. But that day was truly brutal.

Everything bitterly cold, the rain coming down. I was lucky to have a chainsaw that day. The engine kept me warmer than the people dragging brush. But it was so frustrating... when the saw would quit on me, and I'd be forced to sit down and try to fix it, and one of the supervisors would accuse me of being lazy and tell me to get to work.

It's like, "Dude! Do you think I am sitting down, in the rain, in my thin, soaked coat for my health?"

People talk of "burning" in hell. Hell, for me, would be very cold...

The worst weather I can recall was about 2 years ago we had a very bad freezing rain that year. It got so bad that the power went out in most of the state for several days in some places up to 2 weeks. A couple towns had to be evacuated till they got the power fixed. Here are some pictures from that storm

The worst I remember is November of 1996. The snow was so bad that we had 4 straight days off from school! Those were the days.

The blizzard of '77 (thats 1977, wise guys ;) ) we had a week of -20 , and snow so thick that it took 1/2 an hour to walk to the store a block away....the drifts were up to 8 feet in town and up to 20 by the lake! (Many homes in Port Colborne were covered past the rooves!) 30 people died in the area (including Buffalo NY over the border) ; as for myself, I only just missed spending 4 days stranded in my school, as i stubbornly braved the 0 visibility and took an hour (usually 10 mins) to get home. (I decided that if the snow hadnt let up by noon, I was going home for lunch, and not coming back.)

The Winter/Spring of 2007 was horrible. It seemed like it was the winter that would never end and it just happened to be the winter that I worked at a gas station. :(

Like some of the other people here, I live in Southern California so our winters are nothing compared to others. I was young, but if memory serves me right, winter of '98 during El Nino. I have yet to see that much rainfall and flooding in LA.

A couple of years ago, we had a blizzard with 4 feet of snow. all the stores closed early that day. We were up shoveling all night.

We had severe icing, and 20 inches of snow back in 2003. It stayed that way for a week because it kept getting cloder, and icier. The Max, (Which is basically a subway on the streets) was shut down for a week, and very few people would even attempt to try and drive.

The worst winter I recall was the blizzard of 1978. I missed about 3 days of school. The second worst winter was the winter of 1977, we had an oil shortage and the weather was too cold to warm the schools and we missed 10 days of school then.

SNOW:
The Blizzard of January 1978. Second worst: November 1996, when Northeast Ohio got that wet snow. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the snow. :wallbang

COLD:
In January of 1977, it was cold in Toledo. We had half-days at school because there was a natural gas shortage. In December 1984 and January 1985, on several nights the lows got to between 20 and 25 below. It was the same for January of 1986 and 1994.:snowman3: :snowman3:

It was 1993 and it actually happened in March. Mercer County and most
of West Virginia were blanketed with snow. In Bluefield alone, there was
about 2 feet of snow. Governor Gaston Caperton declared a state of
emergency for the entire state and dad had to shovel a path clear from
our tree house to the section of our street in front of our house. When we
lived in Michigan, we had one winter that was almost as bad.

Last year was pretty bad in my area. There were snowstorms almost weekly and the road conditions forced my college to close down four times.

Right now is probably the most severe Winter weather we've had here in Oregon that I can recall. The snow and ice storm of 2003 was comparable, but I think this is just as bad, if not a little worse.

Every snow storm in the 2007-08 season. Seriously, last winter we had over 100 inches of snow! This year is starting to look the same too! Before last winter for years we barely got any snow all at and the temps were even pretty warm for winter.

The only storm in particular (before last winter) that we had that was really bad and I can remmeber was Jan. 2nd 1999. I was a freshman in high school and we got a whopper! Probably almost 15 inches. I precisely remember it was on a Saturday because we had to go back to school on Monday after Xmas break and thinking how upset I was the storm didn't come one day later and they could cancel school!

You still have not answered this question:what city was this where this
1967 blizzard took place?

MORE COLD: In the Januarys of 1996 and '97, some of the Saturday highs were below 20 degrees. My condo was a few minutes walk from Mentor Avenue, and I I took the Laketran #1 bus to get to Mentor's library.

On a few occasions of those two month's Saturdays, I started to walk to the bus, but about halfway to Mentor Ave. I got so cold that I went home.

YES - I know that area very well!! My dentist's office is right across the street from there. I used to go to the doctor's office at the University Hospital complex right at the corner of Mentor/Hopkins, right across from Memorial Junior High. :D

Probably the worst snow I can think of was the Chicago Blizzard of 1967. From a kid's standpoint - that was the worst! Imagine being in snow up to your chin! For a 7 year old kid, that's how bad it was.

I'm from Chicago but I wasn't around yet (I came 4 years later), but I have heard stories and seen some images. Here's a site that has some photos:
